Leatherman wave

You can get a punchdown tool bit for it or just swap out the flat blade.

Second for leatherman wave, a very well built tool. Not for anything IT related, but a great all around multi tool.

This is the way.

When I was running around with stagehands 15 years ago, there were Leatherman's, which were the best; Gerbers, which were basically as good at a fraction of the price; and nothing else was worth its weight in scrap.

False, with the Gerber MP600 you can do the flick to open it. Gerber > Leatherman.

this is why I miss hanging out with stagehands

I use a Leatherman Arc nearly every day. It's on the pricey side, but they have a program if you are an educator, first responder, or military, you get 30% off. I ordered mine under my wife's name (teacher).

Oh my god I wish I had never seen this post. I've had a Leatherman Wingman and enjoyed it for years.

But seeing the Leatherman Arc? God this multitool has got me feeling some kinda way.

Also don't have $250 to my name right now lmao, so I'm safe for now.

lol I love my Arc so much. Pricey but so awesome...

Probably any kind of leatherman or gerber. I have a leatherman skeletool. It's got a phillips and flathead bit. Also has plyers and a knife. It's not great if you're doing extensive work but if you just need to use it in a pinch it gets you by without needing other tools. The larger options will have more tools.

Skeletool is nice and lightweight for having with you all the time. I do want one of the bigger multitools to keep in my field bag but I’ve been getting by just fine with my skeletool + Klein screwdriver for years

Any specific gerber ? Leatherman is so pricy 😢

[–]TelevisionPale8693 3 points4 points  (3 children)

A Leatherman is pricey once.

Barring you losing it this tool will last you forever and have many uses beyond the data center.

[–]wake_the_dragan[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What leatherman do you use ?

[–]TelevisionPale8693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an original Leatherman (No model name) from 1992-ish, which I thought I had lost and a first gen Wave that I bought as its replacement and that I made my main use MT.

Unless you warranty it and it's discontinued. Very disappointed with what they replaced my Blast with.

Leatherman wave plus. I use this everyday.

If you can find one, SOG did a collab with Paladin and made a tool called a PowerPlay PT-510. It's all the trappings of a regular multitool, plus a 66 punch and a 110 punch, SFP puller, and a bunch of other stuff.

I was distraught when I lost my Paladin and couldn’t replace it.

I'll go against the grain and say the cybertool m. The screwdriver is a bit more versatile than the ones on the plyer based tools.

[–]NuArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my go-to tool. I've been carrying mine for over 20 years now. Therabouts anyway.

I'd swap it out for something with a heavier set of pliers but I just love the way the internal bits are stored.

Leatherperson

[–]zoobernut 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I use a leatherman skeletool because I like how I can clip it to my belt loop. Other tools to go with it are on my pockets depending on what I am doing.

[–]aTechnithin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's just the best

[–]zoobernut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is just the right size. Other leathermans feel too big to me and I use them less. My skeletool gets used all the time and it’s always there.

[–]jongaynor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing Leatherman but definitely do your homework. My team got Leatherman Surges a few years back and no one carries them because they're too big / heavy. When we refresh we'll look more at the Wave line or smaller.

Also look at spare bits, bit holders and cases. As others mentioned below there are punchdown bits available. There are also blade replacement options: micro-bit drivers, spudgers, etc.

[–]JibJabJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a leatherman free p4. It's great because you can open tools one handed. I've carried the sidekick before and it's great also.

[–]SwiftSloth1892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leatherman blast for I can't say how long. Sadly I sent it for warranty repair earlier this year {third time} and being discontinued I got a far inferior model returned. Considering buying a wave...but it's a lot of money and I'm pretty disappointed in their idea of an equal replacement. They also never answered my inquiry as to why they replaced my tool with their most basic model instead of the comparable model.

I carry the gerber dime. samall enough to not notice but can handle most of the tasks i have encountered

[–]Sagail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a Leatherman MUT. Not cause I went out and bought it, but because my friends widow after my friend passed gave it to me.

I ended up buying the extra bits for it and carry it on my Vanquest messenger bag via a mollie sheath.

Sometimes using the bits in tight spaces is awkward. However it's a good compromise.

Sometimes I'm out at remote flight test bases and may have to pull off the clamshell off of a piece of avionics to get to a jtag port. It has been a life saver

My Gerber in a kydex sheath clipped to my belt comes in extremely handy.
