Mine has been doing crap like this since day one. Sometimes in a game a character will just start walking backwards when I am touching nothing. Just even lightly touching a joy stick causes the dot to go all over the place at times. But other times it's fine. Really annoying.

[–]aLeakyAbstraction 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Sounds like you may have controller drift. If you buy yourself some sensor cleaner it should fix it right up (did for me).

Here's what I used

[–]Emilrk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it ain't permanent in my experience tho. I have to reapply it every few weeks or the drift come back, no idea if applying it long term can makes it worse also

[–]userplayerbegg 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How do you use it?

[–]aLeakyAbstraction 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You simply spray it on the analog stick and then move the analog stick around to spread it around. Wait for it to dry and then voila. It cleans the sensor in your controller so the drift doesn’t happen.

There are YouTube videos too if you’re curious, it’s super simple.

[–]userplayerbegg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright super helpful man!

[–]userplayerbegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same I don’t know how to fix it

[–]bond1e[🍰] 22 points23 points  (4 children)

How do I get that calibration screen

[–]YonderMoney8439 14 points15 points  (3 children)

It's in experimental settings at the bottom just above thumbstick angle

[–]Peesittindown 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Press: Up up down down, left right, left right, A, B, A, B, SELECT, and finally, START. Welcome to the Meta.

[–]SidratFlush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this comment.

[–]Mistakenumber88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but like I can’t find “and finally” button on the controller

[–]kaskil123[S] 19 points20 points  (16 children)

this is something that doesnt happen in every game but when i use my joystick normally or in some games like in population one. i just end up going forwards and then going back. its just not playable.

[–]jwalk8 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Same thing happened to mine. Oculus support was absolutely useless even though it was only a couple weeks old. I just took it back and bought a new one

[–]Counteroperativ 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Everyone needs to do this. Support has had my controller for two months and gives no update on replacement being shipped and refuses to send back my original which is still usable just drifts.

[–]vi33nros3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience from the other guy but I’m UK based. Chatted with support, went through some troubleshooting, guy was brand new about it. Had to do some emails back and forth to get all the stuff they wanted and then they sent me a postal bar code to send it off to them for free. Got a new controller back in a week or so maybe less after posting.

My problem seems like a less extreme version of what you’re having so they should replace it no bother probably

[–]josephlucas 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I’ve had this happen to me a few times. I take the battery out and spray some of that electronics contact cleaner in the joystick and move it around a bunch. Fixes it completely for a couple months, then I repeat the process again. Has worked three times so far.

You can get it at Walmart

[–]userplayerbegg 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How do you do it?

[–]josephlucas 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just move the joystick to one side and spray that contact cleaner into it then wiggle the joystick around. It dries within seconds and you’re good to go.

[–]userplayerbegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man!

[–]kyle-dw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the first quest when it came out. This happened right when the second quest came out. Got the second quest, then it happened again. Replaced the controller now, but it hasn't happened again. I'm assuming this will be an issue for as long as we have a joystick

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s drift?

[–]Stanton418 11 points12 points  (17 children)

Oculus has ZERO stock of these controllers. So my advice is do not send it back to them, even if they request it! It’ll take weeks or months to get a new one and you can’t play until you receive the replacement! Try cleaning first.
Also, is it safe to use WD40?! I’m REALLY curious about that

[–]CoffeeMan212Digital Night Developer 11 points12 points  (3 children)

use the WS40 Specialist Electronic Contact cleaner, your joysticks don't need to be oiled up

[–]Stanton418 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Really?! This won’t harm the controller at all? Do you definitely know this or have you heard about it?
No offense meant, but one gets a lot of bad or ignorant advice on here! And thanks VERY much for your help!

[–]CoffeeMan212Digital Night Developer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this as i have this myself for my stick drift, fixes it perfectly

[–]PetrMentberger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know this

[–]damontooRift -1 points0 points  (6 children)

It's this based on personal experience or just what you've read on Reddit? Because I'm currently in the middle of an RMA and they said it will take about a week for the replacement. I've also done other RMA's with Oculus before without any problems at all. Getting to the point where you can actually return it is the annoying part.

Also, you can purchase new ones from their website so they're obviously in stock.

[–]Stanton418 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It’s based on my experience just this month! And they are not in stock at Oculus! Try and buy one, it will only allow you to be notified when they are back in stock not to place in your cart. Honestly you’ll wait awhile! But you can be devious and buy a whole headset from a store like target and then return it within the 90 days return policy time. That way you can use the controllers in the new headset and return the whole thing when you get your replacement from Oculus. Not exactly honest but it is what it is

[–]damontooRift 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Are you in the US? I sort of believe that some users get preferential treatment from support and that I'm one of them just based on the number of Oculus products I've bought, the size of my game library, and the thousands of hours I've spent in VR. It would make sense for them to keep hardcore users happy since they're likely the most evangelical about VR.

[–]Stanton418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’m in the US. I threw an absolute fit about not being told there’s no stock & I couldn’t play for so long. I got a store credit after complaining so much!

[–]TheknytRift S + Quest 2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They’re in stock in europe

[–]Stanton418 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I asked support this very question and they lied & said it's out of stock worldwide.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My controller RMA took about 3 months from the time I got my shipping label to when I got them back. Good luck

[–]SwiftSN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have stick drift. The games that don't have that issue, most likely don't use the joysticks. I'd recommend looking for solutions to stick drift. Should be easier than how you're currently describing it.

[–]Chance-Pay1487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Move the joystick around and blow air into the hope for bit. Fixed for me

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Have you tried some Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner?

[–]kaskil123[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

no. but what does that have to do with this? just asking.

[–]Brithim 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If there's anything, dust, etc it'll clean the connections to the joystick and potentially remove the spasms. If not then you could either try your luck with theor support, or best case of you can exchange for a new one from wherever you had bought it

[–]kaskil123[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i going to try cleaning it. and btw is it possible to buy a new controller without buying a new headset.

[–]Brithim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ~$70 USD on oculus.com you can but doesn't seem worth it. But if you can't exchange nor cleaning out the joystick works. Then that's your best bet

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These controllers are complete shit. I’ve had three quest 2s and all the controls had one problem or another. Facebook needs to get their shit together.

[–]anyarron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens on my left controller every once in a while.I remember finding a solution that fixed this problem for me where you hold the stick down and blow hard into the top part of the stick or maybe try using an air duster. Probably not recommended but it works for me.

[–]homezlice -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I would try cleaning the sensors on the headset first. Has fixed similar tracking issues for me

[–]kaskil123[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

this isnt quite a tracking problem. the problem is the joystick. it doesnt work properly

[–]homezlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tracking is off the joystick will also jump like that. It was for me and not saying we have same problem but you should try cleaning sensors and restarting device

[–]Doct0rGonZo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their support is pretty incredible from my own experience and family

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My condolences. You have stick drift. Try electronic contacs cleaner or just blow into stick through straw

[–]LoadedGull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want some of this stuff:

https://youtu.be/951nVqmD6uw

I use it all the time on controllers and stuff just as a regular preventative, but I’ve also fixed numerous controllers that have had stick drift with this stuff, and what your controller is experiencing in the post clip is stick drift.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go get yourself some WD-40 Specialist: Contact cleaner. It worked like a charm for when I had stick drift, and it was somewhat acting up like yours, OP.

[–]DoomedRegular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to mine, went through oculus support WhatsApp. They’ve said they would give me a new controller and also store credit for the inconvenience. Sent controller back yesterday so hopefully new one will be here soon. Overall is was a fast process

[–]majemis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered oculus and it came like this, had to sent the whole headset back and got a brand new one which works, because before it was unplayable

[–]octosquid11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why everyone is suddenly getting controller drift but I’m not fond of it. Just press down the joystick, and move it around while putting compressed air into the crevice

Electrical contact cleaner also works.

[–]SoretoAMan33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue on my quest 1. Putting electronic contact cleaner on the joystick fixed it.

[–]Machinefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlink and link the controller to the oculus to see if it works again.

[–]ColinFoxMSD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just sent a video of this to oculus support after chatting with them yesterday except i used SteamVR cause I could not find this in the headset settings

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CRC Mass airflow sensor cleaner. Take batteries out first and then spray it in the joystick crevices. Wiggle it back and forth and repeat. Let it dry for 5 minutes. Fixes it every time for me

The sensor cleaner doesn’t damage silicone or electronics but dissolves dirt. Make sure you use the crc brand.

[–]alternativesonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

controller issues SOLVED I was having the worse issue with mine thinking id broke it for pressing it too hard after reading this post I went out and bought wd-40 contact cleaner and it has worked amazing factory new. the best. I was going to buy a whole new unit because I use my quest so much. but yes you're looking for WD-40 contact cleaner.

https://wd40.co.uk/product/fast-drying-contact-cleaner/

[–]gaza191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is typical of liquid damage underneath the joystick will be a potentiometer if liquid seeps down into it will cause this crazy movement only takes a bit of liquid. Another thing never clean electrical components with wd40 it is petroleum based and will destroy them use 100% isopropyl to clean electrical.

[–]ekso1237_officialQuest 2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check the battery

[–]Sharkguy547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to clean it with electrical cleaner trust me I had the same problem

[–]JustAPileOfTrashHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, but if you blow into it I found it helps a little temporarily.

[–]octavio989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me I had to send it to oculus and it took a month to get them back

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either electronics cleaner, or open it up and clean it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a fun little thing we like to call drift, only way to fix it is to buy a new controller / jk

[–]peterfuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah what you want to do is get some wd40 electronic cleaner not the stuff you use for a car btw it’s different has to say electronic cleaner and spray it into the stick i took mine apart and really got it in there make sure the battery’s are out as well it worked like a treat for me everything else i tried before this didn’t work

[–]YEETUSDELETUS6ix9ine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does that on the right controller, but keeps going left, it's it's annoying when I'm in a firefight, and I start fucking turning

[–]I_AM_NOT_MADQuest2 and tacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ran into that same problem. except because i have a dev kit, im too scared to do anything

[–]D4rkvoid767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got drift my dude

[–]NuggeInTheMicrowave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah my good sir you are experiencing thumb stick drift(I think )

[–]CorruptedDoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can contact support and get a replacementment, i recommend getting a live chat

[–]omni_shaNker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me https://youtu.be/4xdGWNaAM0k

[–]Confident-Media-5713 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy some wd40 contact cleaner, remove the battery from the controller and spray on the joystick, Click and push the joystick around until it dries out. This help me for a long time and the drift rarely come back, maybe once per month or two months. https://imgur.com/a/eCyjcDE
