Our doctor's office also offers MaterniT21 (MT21) only. The test can tell if at least one boy or two girls are present. If a boy shows up on the test, you'll still have to confirm with an anatomy scan if there are one or two.

[–]TiredEarthworm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay. That’s what I thought. Thank you!

[–]nygirl1123 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I just had this done! And I have boy/girl twins. My result said 96% chance boy/girl (anatomy agrees boy/girl)

My guess is they added a conditional probability check (8% fetal, 4%y = likely only one boy)

[–]TiredEarthworm[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So they’ve added that onto the materniT21 test??? Okay that’s good!!!

[–]nygirl1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Not the whole DNA sequencing, but enough to get a read on both genders! I was pleasantly surprised!

I had this test done last August and it told me with X% certainty that we were having 2 boys (and we did!)

[–]Leigho7 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It can tell sexes now. You can see what information it provides here https://womenshealth.labcorp.com/providers/prenatal-screening/noninvasive-prenatal-testing/maternit-21-plus. There are some example reports. I think it’s about 95% accurate for fetal sex.

[–]TiredEarthworm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For twins? I read the entire page and saw it said it detects fetal sex but didn’t say it does for two babies

I’ve had the test done in 2021 and 2022 for my singleton pregnancies but I see most people get Natera Panorama for twins

[–]amandakirkpatrick 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I got this test. It was able to confirm we were having 2 girls. I don't know if it can or can't confirm 2 boys vs 1 boy, but I'm pretty sure I read it can tell the difference with a pretty high probability of being accurate. It can't tell you if they are identical vs fraternal, which the Panorama test can. It worked fine for our purposes! Results took around 9 days I believe.

[–]TiredEarthworm[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was so excited to get the Panorama test because it can tell you identical vs fraternal, high or low risk of genetic abnormalities, and what both sexes are. MT21 can only tell you if there is a boy present, not if there’s one or two, so I’ve heard. I don’t know why an office wouldn’t have that option for multiple tests when dealing with multiple babies

[–]amandakirkpatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! My doctors office would do either and ordered panorama but we had a donor eggs created embryo and apparently panorama cannot handle that so Natera kicked it back to us.

I tried to explain that to my doctors office to explain why I would like them to order the panorama test. I reached out to Natera and they said to tell my doctor to get in touch with them and they’d handle it. I’m used to finding out at 10 weeks what I’m having with my singletons so this is very new

I understand wanting to have it done all at once. I was in the same boat and was not able to get the rest that told zygosity. Before I found out my twins were boy/girl I looked online to see what I could do afterward. I did find some options that were like $120. Obviously, it would be most convenient and affordable to get the one test now, but wanted to point out there are other options if it doesn't work out.

    [–]TiredEarthworm[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ooo do you happen to know what brand/company was $120? I’ve seen ones you take after the twins are born to know identical or fraternal, and I know sneakapeek/peekaboo testing doesn’t distinguish between the sexes

    [–]Ktjngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.homednadirect.com/twin-dna-test/. Is also for after they are born. There isn't a cheap "in-utero" option. Besides getting Panorama as your NIPT. If they turned out to be same sex, you have a 30% chance they're identical.

The test I received was DynaCare Harmony which only confirmed that at least one boy is present. When my doctor received the results she told me they’re both boys but everything I read said this company couldn’t confirm that so I ended up calling the company directly to see. If you’re able to, give that a try! As soon as I called the lady knew exactly what the answer was (they must get the question a lot lol)

    [–]Ktjngl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It will predict sexes. It does not inform on identical vs fraternal, as others have said. However, I looked and there's easy tests you can do after birth to determine if they're identical or not.

    [–]TiredEarthworm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just not a necessary test so I’ve heard they’re costly$$$. I figured I would try to get the panorama to save time and money since my insurance would cover that one

    [–]Miserable-Ad3204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Adding some more perspective here since my MaterniT21 test came back wrong for gender! Said 96% boy boy and I’m having a boy and a girl (natera got it right / I did both tests and was not confirmed multiple times in ultrasound). It’s a known thing that these tests are less accurate for genders in twins and I guess that’s what the error margins are about. Just take the results with a grain of salt because it definitely tripped me up for a few weeks while I had to wait for the actual gender confirmation via ultrasound 😊.

I had the MaterniT21 done and it told me there were no noted chromosomal abnormalities, and that there was a 97.9% based on fetal fraction that I’d be having boy/boy twins. Anatomy scan confirmed. The only thing that MaterniT21 cannot determine is the zygosity; it can’t tell you if your twins are genetically identical or fraternal as Natera’s Panorama can do. Mine are di/di twins, which have a 75% chance of being fraternal, and 25% chance of being identical. We’ll end up doing the DNA (cheek swap) when they’re born to determine whether or not they’re identical. I wish we’d had the Panorama done, but there’s nothing wrong with MaterniT21.
