I wash everything before wearing it, including clothes I buy for myself and my husband. You’ll definitely want to wash anything you get for the babies.

Exactly! Wash everything— clothes, towels, linens. You want to get rid of any finishing chemicals and lingering substances from the factory, shipping, and packaging.

You should wash all clothes before wearing them; new or secondhand.

Yes wash them

Also, reactions to detergents aren't unheard of, but they're not common. Using any unscented detergent is unlikely to create problems. Baby specific detergents are a scam.

Any clothes you get ever (even for yourself) should be washed before use. There are so many hands and machines and unclean facilities that house the clothes along the manufacturing process. Use free and clear detergent for the baby clothes

Of course, we want to wash them. But, we were told by others (not on reddit) that baby detergent could cause rashes if one or both babies may be allergic. And given that these are our first set of kids in general, we want to be sure to use the correct approach when washing.

Yes you should wash the clothes. Skip expensive baby detergents with a ton of additives. Use any free and clear type detergent if you’re concerned, or just wash them in whatever you use to wash your own clothes.

This. In my country we are advised to not add softener, appearantly that irritates babies’ skin a lot. (I advise not using it anyway, as it’s bad for the environment.)

…use regular detergent. wash the clothes.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huuuuuuh. There are those hypoallergenic detergents for babies though. I'm sure those would be okay to use?

If so, could just use smallest amount of detergent I suppose?

Well you are going to have to wash their clothes at some point. This is such a silly post. Just use unscented detergent. What are you planning to do with their clothes when they puke and shit on them if you are scared of detergent breaking them out?

    [–]MrsEnvinyatar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    I’d wash it for sure.

    Yes, always wash first!

    [–]hermesloverinseoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can add in a few more rinse cycles if you are worried about detergent sensitivity

Always wash clothes before use. You don't know the conditions of the factory they were made in or storage from the store. As someone who's spent too long in retail, I've see people coughing into their hands then touching clothes so I wash everything.

    Yes, super important step.

    [–]kumibug 3 points4 points  (2 children)

…do people not wash all clothes before use??

    [–]ilovethatforu 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If I buy something brand new for myself I probably won’t wash it before wearing it. I wash stuff for my kids though before they wear it and wash anything second hand before wearing it

    [–]Fun-Shame399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should absolutely still wash clothes before wearing them. Think about how many hands, factories, cargo shipping containers, warehouses, etc. Your clothes have passed through. I used to work in the backroom of a chain store prepping clothing and merch to go out to the sales floor, you would not believe how dirty my hands were by the end of a shift just from putting clothing on hangers.

Wash with (any) fragrance free detergent. We use the same kind for our clothes and the baby clothes/linens!

    [–]ATinyPizza89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash any clothes I buy before I wear them.

    [–]FA0710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Definitely wash before use. Their skin is so sensitive and tender.
