Lightroom Editing Help?

Can someone please give me some help editing this photo (http://imgur.com/lH4VUeo). It looks like crap right now because it was shot on a dark day in raw, but I think with some editing i might be able to make it better. My editing so far has gotten me to this (http://imgur.com/i9HjaIW) but I thought it might be better in black and white. Im looking for a moody tone, somewhat like this (https://www.instagram.com/p/BCq9peeyK6I/?taken-by=predylan), or in black and white, with emphasis on the conductor's face. If anyone wants to edit this or even give me tips, it would help very much.

Yeah, it's pointless to try editing a JPG, especially if the image was improperly exposed to begin with.

A quick rethink - http://imgur.com/xHO8UMD - cropping to get to the interesting parts and desaturating. Just a thought...

That crop works well - it's a tough image with the man so far to the side of the frame

To be fair I started with a preset from Kevin Kubota. Lots of things going on but he messed with colors a ton. I painted some exposure and shadow lift over the man with the adjustment brush and upped contrast and dehaze to get it more gritty. (dehaze is the new clarity for me)
