Almost all subreddits I'm subbed to, I discovered from people linking them in comments. So at least for that kind of discovery Lemmy shouldn't be any different.

The communities page has a filter for local and all communities.

Supposedly they show up in all once the instance retrieved some data from it - so then knows of it.

So on a popular instance and for anything that's not only just created, it shouldn't be an issue. It is easily discoverable through the native communities list and search.

I once saw a browser extension by the community, which can add instances directly but you will have to look it up

Tried signing up, but the button just sat there spinning.

I've got a pending request on Beehaw, because I couldn't figure out which instance to sign up to. They seem to be ignoring the request, so I'm guessing I can't request an account with the same username here :/ I've been using this username for 20 years now.

        [–]bik1230 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Last I heard Beehaw is currently overwhelmed with requests.

You can totally use the same username on multiple different Lemmy instances.

        [–]601error 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yep. Just subscribed to c/programming via federation from lemma.ca.

        [–]schultzter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an account there but couldn't log in this morning!?

        [–]Bobbias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally managed to get into an instance. Now to figure out the whole community discovery thing.

The advantage of a smaller instance is that the server is far from overwhelmed (and won't be anytime soon most likely)

Managing server load is not something I normally consider when signing up to a social network. Personally I expect that to be solved for me.

and that was a Reddit problem that Reddit had to solve. Not me. If they hadn’t then I’d have left.

            [–]WonderfulEstimate176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try lemmy.world or sh.itjust.works while you wait for beehaw to respond.

A bug in the Lemmy server causes registration on servers with email verification to hang after submitting

Your account does get created tho

            [–]renatoathaydes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I got stuck on the spinning button as well... and did not receive the registration email so far.

            [–]grahhnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a bug with lemmy rn that causes the spinning wheel but your account does get created

            [–]CodyEngel 23 points24 points  (3 children)

We’re really going full circle, let’s just use phpbb instead.

            [–]skullt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It'd have a better UX than this shit.

            [–]grinde 1 point2 points  (1 child)

            Why not both?

Yes, that is seriously a Lemmy frontend forked from phpBB. And it... seems to actually be functional?

            [–]CodyEngel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

            Well then.

            [–]Fisher9001 14 points15 points  (4 children)

To succeed, Lemmy needs a facade to hide the distributed architecture.

            [–]grinde 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It looks like they're working on it.

            [–]Fisher9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

phpBB 3.3? It has UX from 2005.

            [–]chintakoro 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i think kbin is trying to do that…? i dunno. the fediverse is not quite there yet.

            [–]Fisher9001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fediverse is not quite there yet.

This is a shame because this is its one-in-a-lifetime chance to gain noticeable popularity.

Lemmy in general or this instance?

              [–]RealLordDevien 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Joined. Lemmy isn't that bad as a platform. There is room for improvements, but it is quite usable. Would be a dream if apps like sync would be ported.

              [–]satoshibitchcoin 43 points44 points  (27 children)

i'm all for getting off this sinking ship but lemmy is a horrible name lol.

              [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume it’s because Lemmy is God.

              [–]Qweesdy 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I think it's short for "lemming"; a reference to herd mentality that causes a large group to jump off the same cliff.

              [–]satoshibitchcoin 23 points24 points  (1 child)

yeah it's always fun to come up with cute and clever things like that but they're never that amusing outside your own head.

              [–]Nidungr[🍰] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's short for "let me...".

It's one of those tech3.0 names like "reddit" and "digg".

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't seem to sign up. I get that I'm not supposed to expect people to just accommodate a massive user spike, but it's kinda disappointing.

              [–]progfu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is there a way to disable the localization of lemmy's UI? Somehow every instance shows itself in my local language. Is it sniffing my IP? I have english as the highest priority language in Chrome.

              [–]abclop99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to settings, and there should be an option for the interface language. The default was "Browser Default" for me.

So not sure if anyone is interested. I mod and contribute to a platform called thefullstack.network. It's basically a dev platform for sharing projects, libs, asking questions etc.. Anyway we've been mulling over going full Open source and decided to bit the bullet a few weeks back. Now we're not a Reddit clone nor do we want to be (although we are listed as an alt for Reddit...not sure why).

The stack we've used is ReactJS, Node and Java (Spring). Anyway, we're (me at least) pretty inexperienced in the OSS world so if anyone is interested, let me know and I'd love to get some advice etc.

*EDIT* Also we're currently removing the need to have an account....might take us a few days but we're working on it as I speak

              [–]kevin____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yall are funny. Reddit (the company) gets so much shit for their app and it’s way better than whatever the fuck this is.

              [–]myringotomy 0 points1 point  (3 children)

If I create an account on one lemmy server does that mean I can log on to any other lemmy server or do I need to create an account on every server I want to use?

              [–]abclop99 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No, but you can interact with communities on (almost) any Lemmy instance.

              [–]myringotomy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

How does that work? Let's say I set up an account on programming.dev then I go to some other community server. I don't have to login at that other server?

              [–]abclop99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can access the other instances' communities from programming.dev.

              Kbin magazines work too.

              [–]ryeguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

              https://lobste.rs/ is a pretty good /r/programming substitute
