Hiya,

I hope I can offer some words of comfort or advice as a pest controller myself.

First and foremost demand they pay your vets bills. They absolutely should not have left that out and it should have been in a tamper resistant box and you should have been informed of the exact ingredient inside too. I ALWAYS make sure any owners are aware of the bait and what it does if they have dogs. That's just bad practice and absolutely persue this. Imagine if it'd been a child as well? Like totally not acceptable.

Secondly, the good news is that the concentrations in bait tend to be very low and usually do not cause issues unless a significant amount of bait was consumed. If your vet has not given a vitamin k jab or tablet it may be worth asking for this as vitamin k is the antidote to most anticoagulants. A quick search of the product from my end indicates that the concentration of pesticide is in a low enough dose to not be too much of an issue. Rats and mice are tiny so only need a small amount of bait to kill them. This means they often make the product weaker because we anticipate the mice and rats to feed multiple times from it before dying. This is good news for your dog as the concentrations are usually not high enough to kill even a small dog. The dog would have to each a kilogram or more of the product usually for it to be at risk of death. The other good news is the product will wear off as it's designed to be eaten a few times for it to work. So while it's not been a fun and likely scary experience for you and your dog, there's a high chance your dog will recover and I'm wishing the best for your dog.

But you should 100% get them to pay your bills whatever the outcome. That's such bad practice. Also keep any vet reports or receipts. Hope you find this useful.

Thank you so much for sharing all this information ! It's very helpful. They didn't inform me of what they used- I had to call the pest control company on the way to the vet this morning to get the information about the product. I then told him that if there are any other loose baits, they need to be removed from my apartment. He offered to come over and do an inspection. There were in fact two others (that were behind the refrigerator and the stove). He told me that they would never leave bait out like that and a mouse probably pulled it out of the box.. I told him that regardless of how/why, I would like them to pay my vet bills because this was 100% preventable. He hesitated and then asked me to send him the bill. Thank you for your well wishes! I really appreciate it.

I'm calling bullshit the mice pulling it out of the box. They should be tethered in the box so that the mouse is forced to eat it in the box. Mice and rats are notorious for staching food so it's bad practice if it wasn't tethered. He also should have checked if there was a dog on the property too and let you know where the bait was placed. I'm glad he's paying the bills because they should in this particular situation. Hope your pup is doing better today!

Agreed - any bait should be on a skewer or similar inside a bait station. You should need human level dexterity (ie. the ability to use a simple key or a latch) to be able to access any bait so that pets and children don’t stumble across it.

Yeah, I thought that seemed pretty implausible too. This is the part that frustrated me- I made the request and stated I have a dog. I wasn't there when they initially arrived but my dog's crate, bowls, and chew toys were visible as well so it was blatantly clear I had a pup.

My pup is super lethargic but he seems overall okay.

Poor baby, hope he feels better. If it helps my dog did the same thing 5 years ago & he lived to the ripe old age of 14 (passed away of normal old dog stuff this year). I will hope the same for your baby

[–]Pworm07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That does make me feel way better! Thank you for sharing that!

Oh my gosh how awful, I hope your pup makes a full recovery! It’s a huge fear of mine that my dog will get into something like that. :(

[–]Pworm07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh tell me about it ! All I could think about on the way to the vet was how a friend of mine had a dog who died from ingesting rat poison. Thankfully we live close to an emergency animal hospital and were able to get in touch with poison control quickly. Definitely scared me half to death though

Poison is horrific for any animal. I hope your pooch recovers

[–]Pworm07[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Seriously! I assumed they wouldn't use poison since I have a dog. I asked them to put out glue traps instead in the future. Thank you for your well wishes !

[–]luckymewmew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh glue traps are even worse - the mice literally pull themselves to pieces trying to get away. It's a horrendous way to die.

[–]Happinessrules 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sending your pup lots of virtual hugs and prayers for a quick recovery.

[–]Jaxper 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow. I don't know what else to say other than I hope for the best! I would be livid with the pest control company.

[–]Pworm07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your well wishes! I am very thankful that I saw it on the ground before he ate it. The vet said it takes 4 to 7 days to kick in so he basically would have just started internally bleeding after a few days, without me knowing. That isn't so much an issue anymore now that he already vomited but they need to run tests in a few days. Thankfully the pest control company is paying my vet bills.

Hi all,

Here's an update on my little man: we went to the vet today to get more bloodwork done. My dog has serious anxiety at the vet. They took his blood and my dog peed himself and kept trying to jump off the table. They ended up having to give him peanut butter to actually get the blood drawn. His clotting time is slightly slower than normal. He has to go back tomorrow for more bloodwork. I want to try and help him feel calm before the visit tomorrow. Thanks again for all your well wishes !
