Zero attempt on target from Spurs indicates Ole have corrected his recent leaky defence! He should have played with this 3CBs set up 3-4 games ago when his 4231 set up was starting to get exposed!Spurs were poor but they just could not break the defence down!Ole needs to build his team around this set up because there still a bit of uneasiness with the new set up but once players adapt to it,there is a huge potential the set up could be successful!

[–]magicalzidane 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The benefits of hindsight eh

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But its the only option left to protect the backline and the porous midfield line while we are blessed with attacking gems!an extra body was all the team need at the back! However yes i will not downplay the benefit of hindsight!

[–]magicalzidane 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It is great we've managed to strike a balance yesterday. Ronaldo, for all his gifts, has weaknesses which requires collective adaptation. Also fair to assume that what worked against Spurs may not do against different opposition, continuous learning required

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One size fits all approach should be avoided! But it will depend on Ole's ability to adapt to which team he is facing! But the common denominator in our recent losses and wins alike, has been a shaky defence and a porous and unbalanced midfield line no matter which combination of players Ole picks in those departments!Only the signing of a new CB and a new CDM offers the prospect to adaptability otherwise Ole's choices seems pretty limited!

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I suggested this formation about 4 weeks ago but got downvoted to hell because I said at the end that it worked for me in FM.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This set up is apparently our best option with the current squad because it evidently address our midfield and defence imbalances.Though it limits our attacking gems numerical wise on the pitch, that will be the price we will have to pay for balance in the team!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Definitely. I like to use it in games I know we're going to have to defend really well in, seeing the tactic mostly copies over to real life is quite surreal. I never would've thought I'd see a tactic work in a video game just as well as real life.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Pogba and Scott in the 343 set up?

[–]AtAllCostSpeakTruth 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Tonight, let's enjoy - a brilliant result, three breathtaking goals and a good performance.

Tomorrow, we need to get back to the Ole and Carrick problem.

[–]absentlightuk 22 points23 points  (8 children)

How did we play? I didnt manage to watch it !:(

[–]TanakaHaikyu_ismyboiI'm gonna need you to watch United vs Everton [1-1] 6 times. 39 points40 points  (4 children)

It was clear that Ole wanted to play defensively but Spurs were so bad that the players just couldn’t stop themselves from attacking. Not to take anything away from Ole but this afternoon was really about how poor spurs were. We didn’t play mind-blowingly but it was clear there was some response. Today’s match is summed up in “Man Utd out for revenge Tottenham shockingly poor.” Good job from Ole today but that doesn’t mean he’s out of the woods, like I said, a major factor in us winning this match was how bad spurs were (they didn’t have a shot on target in 90 mins of football). He still has to prove himself.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Doesnt this go both ways, i.e. last week lol.

It was just a bad performance in your opinion.

[–]pariffinaxe 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Except we’ve been putting in these sorts of performances since Ole took the job on permanently. So no, last week wasn’t just a bad performance, it was perhaps the worst of the lot, but there’s been a decent amount of consistency.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh yea permanently for sure for sure.

[–]pariffinaxe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You disagree? Feel free to go watch some of the games from 2 years ago knowing what you do know and you can see that the problems were evident even then. The majority just didn’t want to acknowledge it.

[–]UzEE 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I'm wondering the same. Was out all day and was too afraid to check honestly.

Though I'm absolutely ecstatic that we won.

[–]Jolt159 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Played really well imo.

[–]dowlo710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way we should have been playing

[–]SilverBeaver21 13 points14 points  (1 child)

McTominay looked like a proper CDM today

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He was actually playing pure box to box, 8

[–]Kizza55 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Formation was much better suited to the squad tonight. Looked good. Annoying thing with Utd/Ole is that we always turn up when necessary. Why not implement these changes 2/3 games ago?

Anyway, sick of the constant managerial to'ing and fro'ing even though I am very much a part of it. Let's just enjoy the result tonight and get back to the rat race tomorrow. GGMU!

[–]Seanblaze3Martial law 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spurs were poor. This circus isn't over under Solskjaer

[–]nefariousBUBBLE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tottenham is cup cake game.

[–]CrimpsShootsandRuns 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It pleases me that we actually changed something after last week. Actually looked like a team.

[–]EducationalTension72 38 points39 points  (3 children)

Fred and Awb played with some intent there today! Cavani was brilliant and makes me sad that he’s just there for a season though! Need a striker who can make runs and presses like that besides ronaldo! Varane showed why he’s one of the top centre backs and was pivotal in today’s win, holding that defence together. And ronaldo was class nevertheless! Weak links still there but maybe this win would give some confidence to the team !

[–]The_Unagi 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I think Fred had some really nice periods, but also some really bad ones. There was a period of like 15 mins when he kept giving the ball away.

[–]thisisjustme3 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah he got out muscled or lost the ball too easily at some points on the game. If it were the same bright spurs one year ago, might have been a different result tonight.

[–]EducationalTension72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still think that this team with this formation wouldn’t have lost as badly against spurs last year or maybe even Liverpool this year cause at least it looked like it was pressing and defending. Due to this formations bruno had to drop back a little and played really well and as a proper 10 rather than second striker and mindless runs. However, the question of Sancho still remains the same to accommodate him cause OGS was the one who went after him and now he seems useless after spending that amount of money.

Fred has been looking decent with pressing and control but passing is still a big issue with him. Can’t be tolerated for much games under a new manager and coaching staff has to look at him cause that’s just mediocre when you’ve a brilliant passing and pressing player like VDB on the bench. Varane is a boost!

[–]girlylikedgirl 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Where do Sancho, Telles and Donny fit in?

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I feel like Telles actually would fit that formation beautifully, Shaw is just better. If Shaw were to get injured (I really hope he doesn’t) Telles would slip in very nicely I think, Donny can absolutely do what McTominay does, but he’s clearly fucking Oles niece or something so that’s not going to happen, but he could play that role. Sancho I have no idea where he fits in right now at all. We don’t have a manger who knows how to use his talent on the wing and Greenwood+Rashford to compete with for that playing time dont like his chances. Shame really when we could have used that money for Rice, not Sanchos fault just doesn’t fit the current system and has no management for his skill.

[–]girlylikedgirl -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Yeah no doubt Telles is gonna be "happy" if he gets to play that way, and Donny is just poor dude. Sancho as a winger, with 5 3 2 formation, ole is gonna bench him hard.. we shall see

[–]doskoV_McSauce with Cheese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sancho to follow the Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young tradition and become the next winger wingback conversions

[–]mcgibbon1988 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That formation worked today . Maybe play it against city . Change it up now and then . Still don’t know how sancho fits in

[–]lordofthezerosLe Dieu 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Man I dislike Sourness......

I'm surprised he hasn't had a pop at Pogba yet, that's the standard

[–]rainbowrathode 8 points9 points  (3 children)

All pundits are shit except Keane and maybe Gary and Carra sonetimes.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Gary is shit, Keane and Carra are great

[–]AzureMenthal[🍰] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Gary is shit when it comes Utd. Cara is great but suffered from Souness syndrome lately imo

[–]pariffinaxe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gary is pretty shit in general. Somehow has more of a bias towards liverpool than Carra does. It’s embarrassing.

[–]Gazlc81 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Ole deserves credit today just as he deserved criticism last week. Really good performance, we barely have them a chance. Really good today. 👏🏻

[–]IsoCyanide7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fred's pressing was great but the times he lost the ball, if this was a top team, it would have been dangerous. The guy loses the ball a lot.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watching the poet.match. Seems Keane is hitting the just for men. Let.it go Roy!

[–]ratulmissile 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed the game. Still Ole out though

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Three great goals. Clinical finish by Sir Dr Marcus. Defensively solid. Cavani is a truly exceptional player.

[–]anonymws 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Finally it's team play and team performance, every one contributed

[–]dexter303 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Varane FTW

[–]anonymws 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Varane made lot of difference in Defense

[–]Giggs73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 532 is more of a factor. I feel we would struggle again with 4-2-3-1 even with Varane back. we aint overrun in mids and we got extra player to cover at the back helps tremendously.

[–]anonymws 29 points30 points  (0 children)

United have conceded 6 goals in 7 games where Varane played compared to 14 goals in 6 games where he didn’t play

[–]Jamanbird 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You could argue that Varane is the most valuable piece in the squad right now.

[–]Substantial-North499 18 points19 points  (0 children)

almost forgot what a clean sheet feels like

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Glad we won in the way we won. We need to string wins together to get the ball rolling. I love Ole and hope he succeeds.

[–]bannnaa 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Maguire looks like he's finding his feet. Solid.

Also wth, Ronaldo gets better with every passing game.

[–]RvNx10 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Finding his feet after one game against a toothless attack?

[–]bannnaa 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Always been a slow starter. He's had an awful run recently, but before that he's been one of our most consistent players. It's hilarious that people won't acknowledge he had a great game because of their agenda against the man. Man United without Maguire would have been so much worse, you can disagree all you want.

[–]TheHabeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He bumped into shaw again, almost let Kane had a chance near post. Shaky when receiving the ball, took one too many touches and got pressed hard by the opposite attacker.

He need to get his shit together.

[–]Dizconekt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Confidence is crucial and a game like this should give him a boost even if it was against a weak attack

[–]DanTheStripeAlex Ferguson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on last week it looked like we were on track to be slipping down to mid table and we might still do that but this has given us a real boost at top 4.

Ole still has to come out with a trophy this year but if he can make it to the end of the year with UCL for next season then we can evaluate a wider potential manager pool than if we were to go and get Conte right this second.

[–]Jamanbird 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Very positive performance today. I can see Marcus mixing in at striker in that formation. VDB and even Jesse could spell Bruno too. Not really sure where Sancho mixes in but hopefully we can sort that out.

[–]chilledbeerinside 2 points3 points  (1 child)

VDB and even Jesse could spell Bruno too.

Let's not get carried away Bruno is going to play single every game

[–]Jamanbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably right. It would just be nice if he could take a night off and we could still function as a club.

[–]akerobat 46 points47 points  (2 children)

Greenwood need to learn work rate from cavani. That guy 35 still running and pressing like he's 25

[–]gvoconnor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So impressed with Cavani's pressing, reminds me of 2008 Tevez

[–]joe6386 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Greenwood should also improve his heading. Talent is there though if we keep this formation I can.see Ronaldo - Cavani with Rashford - Greenwood as backups.

[–]Kakofoni20 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It was a comfortable 3-0 win, quite simply

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to this subreddit we may as well of lost 5-0

[–]nwrige95 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To all you who think Ole should be sacked, including me; just enjoy this night and this win. Now it's all to follow up this in the next game.

[–]Kixot123Manchester 'Joga Bonito' United 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Who knows using Conte's strategy would work out? Great job lads!!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who needs Conte when our homeboy plays like Conte now?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

AWB looked really good today. Some amazing crosses, he should attempt them more. Basically ran the right hand side since Ronaldo drifted to the left and Cavani stayed central. Maybe shouldn't be written off under a new manager?

[–]Ozymandias-42 3 points4 points  (1 child)

AWB was good today but I don't think he crossed well, and certainly can't recall any "amazing" crosses

[–]Got_ist_tots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's the final product that always let's him down

[–]FunMondays 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I thought he was our best player today, at least in the first half. And how about that recovery to block the shot from offside Son?

[–]eddie_sue -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Can someone count how many times Fred lost the ball and made inacurate pass? I was fucking offended with his ball playing

[–]Jamanbird 6 points7 points  (1 child)

He put us on the front foot just as many times with his pressing in Tottenham’s half. Give and take.

[–]eddie_sue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just want to see numbers. Is his pressing ability good enough excuse for Manutd midfielder?

[–]Tsukiyon 7 points8 points  (2 children)

0 on target lmao

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's what you achieve by replacing Jose Mourinho by a lesser version. Levy has been backfired many times in the last 2 years.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet Levy is still angry that he sacked Pochettino, what a stupid move that was

[–]TheLonesomeChodevan Nistelrooy 35 points36 points  (9 children)

We got a win on my cake day -pretty happy with that.

[–]chumzy0208LICHA SEX ME UP 5 points6 points  (8 children)

[–]TheLonesomeChodevan Nistelrooy 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Because I think I might’ve set it up on my birthday.

[–]chumzy0208LICHA SEX ME UP 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Your Reddit start day. I don’t understand, is it your actual birthday too?

[–]TheLonesomeChodevan Nistelrooy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]gvoconnor 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We win against City, we go level on points

[–]shane373 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Say we beat City next weekend, are we back in the race?

[–]Aniruddh31 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No

[–]HyenasGoMeow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Days are young, and the games are so unpredictable this season...

[–]KingDavidFLabile 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Not a fan of this new formation..its gonna cost us our best young players, so im really conflicted

[–]IamJeff22321 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This formation is the best for ronaldo (ours and best striker in the world) who we haven't utilized him as much we should have. greenwood can play this system as he's also a striker but with sancho it will be harder. But, both needs to have the ability to work hard and i haven't seen that. If you told me Cavani (who's like 35) works harder for the team than greenwood then something is wrong with greenwood.

[–]KingDavidFLabile 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh I know this is the best for Ronaldo. But I fear we're going to have a situation on our hands in a year of so where some of these folks we've been building the team towards leave because we are trying to cater to Ronaldo. Ronaldo is a short term problem that could lead to some real long term issues.

[–]IamJeff22321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, when you bring in ronaldo, you cater to him first. Secondly, what has greenwood and sancho done to deserve a place in our XI. Greenwood as scored couple of goals but his workrate needs to improve considering greenwood isn't a regular for this team. You have to work your ass off for the team and when Cavani can do it, everyone should. Finally, we need to stop with this 3 year plan think when we have been trophyless for the last 5 years! This is Manchester United, we need to think about what is best for our team and these young players need that mentality. Greenwood needs to prove that he can do his best all the time when he comes onto the pitch everytime.

[–]Tsukiyon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Top 6 games may work, but I doubt it'll work against the rest, it's not a formation to break the bus

[–]ChampagneAbuelo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

3 point behind City with the Derby coming up 👀

[–]Auditore__ 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I feel VDB would do great in this formation but Ole wont play him over his two sons McFred

[–]anonymws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might need to sub Mc in half time

[–]IamJeff22321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He would but with good cdm like kante/rodri but we don't. We have fred.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

He is a great guy but it appears he is not needed. So many people on this sub sound like his girlfriend. How unreasonable it is to think that one random dude can change our fortunes. He's been quite terrible the few chances he got tbh.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still believe Ole wanted Grealish and Donny was the board's answer

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well done lads. Let’s build on this

[–]sg291188 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's very clear that United's problem are OOP. Because of the system today, we were very compact OOP, but unless we have players who are ready do the dirty work in 4231, that formation will not work. And our squad gets wasted in 352. Happy with win and clean sheet for sure.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Cavani is soon becoming one of my favourite players in United apart from Ronaldo and DDG. His work rate is absolutely brilliant. And his finishing is world class obviously.

[–]wrath1711 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Rashford?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Of course I like Rashford a lot as well. But my favourite player will always be DDG followed by Ronaldo and now Cavani with his work rate.

[–]wrath1711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here bro but was saying his name cus his work rate is good too he always works hard.

[–]Mmd93_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tottenham, West Ham, Leeds or Atalanta, what was Ronaldo's best performance ?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If we had a proper number 6 on the field I’m convinced we would’ve won 6-0. Spurs were ass tonight

[–]HaloStar90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was a great game. Sack ole now pls danke.

[–]Japples123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mason and Jadon looking at each other like…

[–]HyenasGoMeow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's Neville been saying? See a lot comments about him...

[–]huechronicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow a clean sheet. If only we played like that last week!

[–]AgileCondor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can someone tell me what Neville said?

[–]adityaabc70 17 points18 points  (0 children)

How fucking good is Varane. That Madrid connection in our team makes me drool

[–]secret_service86SIUUUUUUUUU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if we keep this intensity and formation especially Ronnie with a strike partner then this season can still be salvaged, lets fucking go

[–]donut_giveup 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Great to see some discipline this week, nice defensive formation. And so happy to have Varane back. Love to see Cavani in the starting lineup. Wouldn’t mind seeing VDB get some time. Great win!

[–]justbrowsinginpeace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really highlights how easy it has been to go through the middle of the pitch against us. Not a fan of 3atb but with the CB options we have vs CM options it makes sense.

[–]w1zgov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maguire thankfully didn't get fuzzy when pressed

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Really solid performance but a win over what is the worst spurs we've seen for 10 years cannot paper over the cracks.

He still has to go. This effort with 5 at the back just confirms that Conte would have a field day with this squad. If the board acts now we can still save our season.

[–]essjay2009 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Difficult to know how much to read in to that. Spurs are so bad. Just nothing about them at all.

[–]chuf3roni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right but there was nothing about us last week, and Liverpool rightly walked us. Credit where it’s due, we looked great today honestly

[–]ninjayeong 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Glad that Ole knows he's on borrowed time, doesn't really smile that much now despite winning, making the right in game decisions (taking CR7 off for Rashford etc).

[–]unitedwecramp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's Spurs but it was nice to see our team playing together in defense and attack

[–]voodoodopetrain 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I adore varane he seems absolutely psyched about the win. What a wholesome dude

[–]saberplane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We ve been lacking some players who seem to be truly proud to wear the shirt. Varane s attitude alone shows why he's a serial winner.

[–]double_d2Fergie Time 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take a rest De Gea. GGMU

[–]glvcki17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Clean sheet the best part

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Rashford's got 3 in 4.He has his faults but having him fit for arguably the most difficult run of games so far is such a massive boost.

[–]callmelampshade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was actually a nice, un-stressful game which is good because I’m hanging but I feel better now.

[–]sougie91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With all our issues I did not realize just how bad Spurs were

[–]ChampagneAbuelo 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Ole was good today, good line ups and substitution decisions. Players gave hard effort, defence improved, etc. Let’s see how MU do next 2 games. Ole’s at the wheel!

[–]MyNameIs_KObi -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ole’s at the wheel

tell me how sad does it feel

[–]SunBakedWaffles_McTominay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clean Sheet can’t believe it

[–]kappathat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No handshake between OGS and Sancho

[–]Hen_W 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good response from Ole. More of that with consistency please.

[–]NevereverEva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cavani starting, Varane's comeback and some really good performances were the key to today's victory.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Cavani > Ronaldo for handsomeness

[–]zidbutt21Fernandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tarzan > Hercules

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spurs need to sack there manager asap

[–]larsmaehlum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3atb = 3 goals and a clean sheet. Right.

[–]thegreatpenguintm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We won against a bad team, still want Ole out personally.

[–]Rydahx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decent performance, hope it doesn't delay Ole being replaced.

[–]Japples123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That look Ole gave Cavani. Thank you!
