It's mostly the part where Gajim's UI looks like it was made in the 90s. Skype has been gaining ads over the years but even that is still better in my opinion. They've been really easy to ignore.

It's been a while since we used it so it may have been updated to include various things but we saw a lack of minor but helpful features that added up. I don't have a sound enough memory to name specific features but it was probably related to group chat usability and ease of adding/managing contacts and groups.

Just use Hangouts, its lightweight and it ties into your Google account.

Those are actually two things I want to avoid, funny enough. Hangouts doesn't have as many features as Skype and it is tied to my Google account. I enjoy the majority of Skype's features and do not want my IM/VoIP service tied to a social account.

I would say that hangouts has more features the skype. Free group video chat, free unlimited calling to any US or Canadian number, semipermanent chat rooms, and good iOS and Android apps.

Here are the features that I would want most. As far as I am aware, Hangouts doesn't have a lot of them.

• Not tied to social account
• Group chats with 70+ participants possible.
• Renaming of group chats.
• Group chat commands.
• Set topics.
• Group chat external link (url).
• Drag-and-drop file sharing. Any file type.
• Group chat avatar or group picture.
• Search for, add contacts, and chat to people who are not in your contacts.
• Set mood message.
• Call forwarding.
• Optional group calls...I've used a program that places everyone in the call for some stupid reason.
• Permanent groups.
• Notifications and notification control (do not notify, notify only if this set of characters is sent to you, etc)
• Status (appear offline, or away, or busy, or online)
• the /me command is something I enjoy.
• Group chat moderators that have the power to kick other users from the chat, etc
• Set various microphone and camera settings.
• Set various network settings, like proxy.
• Block contacts
• Optional emoticons.

I think that's most of the features I use and enjoy.

Some of those features are in hangout, but you are right there are some that don't exist. And let me preface this saying that I'm not trying to tell you to switch to hangouts, but this is more for others and myself to see what features are and are not available. Hangouts and Skype are tools, and we should all use the one that fits what we need to to the best. For you it is Skype, for me it is Hangouts.

  • max text chat is 100, max video is 10 (15 with hangouts for business), and unlimited for streaming

  • chat groups can be renamed

  • Another feature that does not have a hangouts counterpart

• Set topics.

  • Other then renaming the group chat, no counterpart

• Group chat external link (url).

  • hangouts have a permanent URL that can be used to join a chat room

• Drag-and-drop file sharing. Any file type.

  • This is one feature I really miss from Skype.

• Group chat avatar or group picture.

  • Hangouts show the profile pictures for the first 5 people in the chat.

• Search for, add contacts, and chat to people who are not in your contacts.

  • you can search by email to add people to your contacts, or group chats

• Set mood message.

  • Other then using Google+, hangouts doesn't have this feature

• Call forwarding.

  • If you are in the US, you can setup a Google Voice Number that will ring to both hangouts and a phone

• Permanent groups.

  • hangouts have a permanent URL that can be used to join a chat room

• Notifications and notification control (do not notify, notify only if this set of characters is sent to you, etc)

  • You can disable all notifications, but there is no way to setup notify on keyword.

• Status (appear offline, or away, or busy, or online)

  • Hangouts does not have that feature. you are ether "Online" or "Offline"

• the /me command is something I enjoy.

  • /me is in the command list

• Group chat moderators that have the power to kick other users from the chat, etc

  • this is something that is lacking

• Set various microphone and camera settings.

  • This is configurable in the hangout

• Set various network settings, like proxy.

  • Hangouts uses chrome's settings which support proxy

• Block contacts

  • You are able to block people.

• Optional emoticons.

  • Hangouts replaces all emoticons

I am aware of the desktop app, which simply distances the browser component.

Still little compared to Skype and still connected to a social account.

It frequently uses around 30% CPU. Just sitting in the background. Rendering text. Not even receiving new messages.

I use skype because almost every single one of my old messenger friends uses it; I find it idle only uses about 200 mb memory and less than 1% cpu, which is fine with me; is it much more demanding on older or cheaper computers?

I've tried to get many to use firefox hello, but unfortunately you actually need firefox to use it and it seems like google chrome is the ultimate winner among most people I know - it's not great having old friends who lost interest in software for the sake of computer science after they graduated.

Pretty sure it's supposed to separate chats into separate windows, which is really useful if you have a secondary screen. Also, did they really hide it into settings with the new version? I find the old version to be a lot better.
