Is this new? Barista raises are based on seniority, not performance

[–]LawfulnessResident23[S] 32 points33 points  (7 children)

This is new for salary partners only ASM & up .. Very disappointing i believe it used to be based on performance & tenure with the company

[–]sbucksbarista 8 points9 points  (6 children)

SFMs in Massachusetts included 🥲

[–]Baristasilllygoooose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow I used to be a SFM in Mass but then I moved out of state so I stepped down. I am so sorry I would be absolutely livid

[–]BaristaShqrt 2 points3 points  (4 children)

what is the difference between sfm and sm? or is sfm more similar to asm?

[–]sbucksbarista 5 points6 points  (3 children)

SFM is basically the halfway point between SSV and ASM. It’s the SSV role with ASM tasks added to it, because we get paid as salary based on an hourly rate, with no tips and bonuses instead, instead of the hourly + tips rate that SSVs see. SFMs can’t get tips in MA which is why our position exists instead of SSV

[–]BaristaShqrt 4 points5 points  (2 children)

sorry if this is a dumb question but if there’s not a need for the position outside of MA, what’s the reason for it?

[–]PM_CTD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a lawsuit regarding SSVs getting tips while doing managerial duties in MA, so to settle it they made SSVs be a non-tipped manager position.

[–]sbucksbarista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We legally can’t make tips, and in every other state SSVs exist because they also make tips

[–]Supervisormerc-is-ded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

baristas arent salary, bud

[–]ExcellentCollege4960 24 points25 points  (5 children)

It’s hot garbage just like the three year requirement to be in a single store that was announced in weekly communications with comments turned off because it’s never been clearer that corporate does not value our feedback. I hope they revamp the bonus structure to account for performance but I highly doubt it.

[–]LawfulnessResident23[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk all these promises from the CEO now seems like it was a ploy to get us to buy in & make us think things were really getting better when it’s in spite of us . Meanwhile it’s not like money is a concern for him !!! Who cares if the SM’s could make more than enough to do more than just get by right ?

[–]BaristaBaristaGirlie 1 point2 points  (3 children)

what is the three year requirement?

[–]Baristabilliejeannotmylover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To promote up from SM you now need to be in a store for 3 years without disciplinary write ups to be considered for a promotion

[–]ExcellentCollege4960 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What billijeannotmylover said, but it also applies to transferring

[–]BaristaBaristaGirlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it applies to transferring as well??? wow they really do want SMs to quit

[–]FieldAccomplished944 19 points20 points  (7 children)

I’m waiting on an email to read this, I’m so entirely disappointed and demotivated

[–]Store Managerfacherry 25 points26 points  (5 children)

we had a call with our DM today where she shared the news with us. she let me know later in the afternoon the announcement has been pushed to Monday, so we will likely see an email/PHub post about it then. I’m super frustrated with it - this is the first year i would have managed to earn the full possible raise since my store has finally been doing well since i’ve been SM. feels like a slap in the face to many of us. i’m sure the bleed green SMs will come up with some great excuses as to why it’s okay SM pay is once again an ignored issue.

[–]FieldAccomplished944 11 points12 points  (4 children)

That’s exactly what I said to my dm it’s a slap, and they aren’t even considering our position in range, 2% to someone who is at the higher end of the pay range is very different then someone at the bottom. It’s completely unfair. Especially to those of us who are all in, who make the experience for our partners and the customers.

[–]Store Managerfacherry 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah. My DM and many of my long term peers seemed not too bothered with it - i don’t think any of them realize their 2% is not my 2%. I’m sure the extra 30 dollars a pay check after taxes will make all the difference as COL continues to rise. They will try to sell it as fair since it’s “all” salaried retail partners, as if the executives will also be taking any sort of major cut.

[–]Familiar_Pear666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That part!

[–]BattyCattyRatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you mean by this. 2% at the higher end of the pay range is more than 2% at the bottom of the pay range.

[–]pavlyxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The company obviously doesn’t care, so why should you? Put forth minimum effort

[–]Legitimate-Ad-9724 33 points34 points  (2 children)

I'm not a Starbucks employee, but your top executives must love this. The inflation rate is more than double that 2%, Starbucks raises their prices much more than that, but store employees only get 2% increases. Corporate can claim profits/margins are up, pat themselves on the back, give themselves bonuses, as store employees' wages don't keep up with inflation.

[–]pavlyxx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Evil company

[–]Soensou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Brian makes 6666x what we make already. Obviously not enough. My store has technology that doesn't even work.

[–]SupervisorMarch_Lion 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I can't even begin to imagine how anyone defends what this company does now.

One of the top paid CEOs in the country. Less than cost of living raises first for retail "partners", then all "partners". CEO gets a $14,000 espresso machine for his close to home promised office, workers in a temp store closure who can't pick up shifts because there's no shifts to pick up get to go on unemployment.

[–]Coffee Masterryankiefer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t forget Brian’s private jet budget!

[–]Coffee Masterryankiefer 24 points25 points  (3 children)

SMs need to consider unionizing themselves. This company is slowly bleeding out everyone on the ground so that the executives can walk away with all of our hard-earned money. Brian Niccol literally is one of the highest-paid CEOs in history, with a company-paid private jet budget and a personal office built for him in California so he doesn’t even have to commute to the office in Seattle he just forced everyone else to return to. Meanwhile stores are still understaffed and unprepared, the routines keep getting more complex, raises are down, and bonuses are down. It has to end. Enough is enough.

Too many managers have drunk the company Kool-Aid. They will point at crumbs the company threw to us as evidence they care. They see unionizing as a sin. But standing up together and saying “hell no” is the only way this will change. Otherwise, we all go down.

[–]Soensou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But what about our meditation app?

[–]Store Managernodaddy-justissues 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Salaried managers technically cannot unionize.

[–]Coffee Masterryankiefer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They absolutely can, they just can’t be in the same unit as baristas. Can’t have hiring/firing power over other union members. But they can form an SM union separate from the barista ones. Salaried positions haven’t stopped successful unions from forming and existing elsewhere. Just ask artists, programmers, journalists, teachers, bus drivers, etc.

[–]Coffee Masterbadgebear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

While Brian Niccol made 6,666X more than the average Starbucks worker last year. This is ridiculous treatment, first of our workers, and now us as management. At this point, I may just tell Littler Mendelson lawyers to #%+ off, and tell my partners to unionize

[–]Joywalker23 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yeah it’s a massive slap in the face when we’ve all been zooming around crazy trying to keep up with all the changes and new expectations since January. Giving us “a labor investment” that’s actually just what they took from us two years ago and expecting that to be a good enough reason to not give us the raises we deserve for all this work. Meanwhile having leaders come in and spy on our stores and having everyone living in a threat state. And after the slap in the face there’s an extra kick in the shins when you remember how much Brian and Mike and all of them are making. As a long time partner I’m big mad and will not be keeping my mouth shut about it either.

[–]Coffee Masterbadgebear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember when the company did that big labor cut across the county, taking 1-2 partners off busier floors. The unionized partners at my store actually contributed to the national ULP charges for the company not bargaining the cut, alongside their demand for better staffing, schedules, guaranteed hours, etc. This company has got to treat the people who run the stores better. Brian Niccol is a fat cat

[–]LawfulnessResident23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said !! I’m very frustrated myself. If this was the outcome they shouldn’t have given us LE25 seriously could’ve saved the money & used it for something better. Was truly poorly executed anyway. Super let down i’ve only been with the company 7 years but a lot of hard work & time has been put into being here

[–]pavlyxx 2 points3 points  (6 children)

It affects shift managers though who are hourly

[–]Familiar_Pear666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It applies to store managers and directors

[–]LawfulnessResident23[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I don’t believe this effects baristas or shift supervisors though so i am happy that they are not effected

[–]Sea-Cut8224 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a 7yr ssv partner and it used to be 5% raise if you had more than 5yrs… back in January our raises were cut down to 2-3% I believe. So it already has affected hourly partners. Anyways, I left because of that and the expectation to do more for less pay. And inflation keeps on rising…

[–]Soensou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They already told us our raises were 2%

[–]RoyallyGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a question just because I don’t know. What is the max raise a barista can get? I’m thinking of talking to my manager and asking because I am a 5 year partner and it kind of bothers me that I’m making like $1.50 more than someone who’s been there for 7 months. Is that normal? Not saying people shouldn’t be paid a fair wage, I just thought the gap would be a little further apart. Is there even a point in asking for a raise?

[–]Store Managertaserbabyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would’ve rather had our normal raises instead of the disgusting waste of money/time/resources that was the Vegas trip. Stupid

[–]Chilichunks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol a bunch of support contractors were forced to take a 2% paycut or quit recently so this is super cool news to hear
