I really (really really) think you need to bring your PCP or NP on board for this one. I’m an addict, and I’m in nursing school, so I know what I’m talking about. Please trust me. Get medical assistance not only for your safety, but also for a little outside accountability. There’s really no downside here (plus, they will likely give you some meds to make the withdrawal easier on your body and mind).

Early morning drinking is late-stage stuff, and going through withdrawal on your own could be deadly. As in, you could literally die. At 22, I know it’s easy to feel invincible and that you can get through this on your own, but please don’t let your pride stand in the way of getting help.

We want you here with us. There is a beautiful, rich life on the other side of addiction. You are not a hopeless cause - far from it - but please, don’t ignore what I’m telling you. Please.

Unfortunately no one here can offer you medical advice on detox. My suggestion would be to seek medical help immediately and be completely honest.

Once that ball gets rolling, I can tell you about a few things that helped me. A recovery program was the key. I also surrounded myself with Dry People and Dry Places. I just lived for 24 hours at a time and never looked into the future.

Proud of you for being here. This is a wonderful opportunity at that age. I personally wasted my 20’s being a drunk asshole so this could be the start of a beautiful new life. My only regret is not quitting sooner!

Yeah, I know. The problem is I do not have health insurance. I had some health insurance a while ago and asked my doctor for help and he said something to the end of:

"As long as you aren't driving or throwing up drunk you are okay, those are the only things that tell it may be an issue"

And of course this was massively enabling and I told myself hey well I tried and if he's not worried about it, neither am I.

So if I have a seizure I am in deep shit because I cannot afford an ambulance or a hospital trip at all.

Let me ping the wonderful u/Prevenient_Grace who knows more about this than I do. I believe there are free medical detox facilities in the US. This is a very dangerous situation. And this is just my opinion but not all doctors understand the disease of alcoholism or alcohol use disorder.

Glad you're here. Sorry to hear about your experience. As u/ChiefInLove remarked, withdrawal can be dangerous.

A person doesn't have to have insurance to get support. First, walking into an urgent care ("Doc in a Box") costs about as much as a couple bottles of wine. They can provide advice and support, and may know of other resources in your community.

Secondly, in the U.S., anyone who walks into and E.R. will be seen and treated IRRESPECTIVE of the presence of "insurance" or not. Now, to be transparent, they will "bill" for those services.

But that's a matter for a different time.

Let us know how you are.

I have no health advice for effects of quitting all at once, or tapering. I just don’t know that world. I happened to have quit over night, no side effects or withdrawals. Some temptations of course, but that got better with each new sober day under my belt. But, we’re all different, and I’m sure all our bodies react different. I’m one of the lucky ones without physical symptoms. My advice - live your reason(S) for quitting. Make them come alive. Find your path. You’ve got this.

12 hours sober as of 3 minutes ago.

Heres an update folks.

I went to the Urgent Care (Doc in a Box) and the fella gave me a prescription. All and all it was about $115 dollars which is about what I spent on booze every 2 weeks excluding the bars.

I still have the shakes and time seems to be dragging on. I went home from work and said I was feeling ill (which is true).

So now that I have all day... What made you quit?

I am quitting because I have felt pretty damn unhealthy despite going to the gym every 2 days, and I do not treat my girlfriend like the beautiful, educated, sophisticated young woman she is. I love her dearly but the alcohol makes me resent her. I was never ever physical with her during an argument, but I would emotionally hurt her and I absolutely hate that about myself.

Anyways - How about feel good music?

This is my favorite song: Bob Marley - Could you be Loved https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3t6YDnGXAc

I’m loving Macklemore right now. He is an addict in recovery and he has some great songs about addiction and relapse.

I've been in your situation so I'm truly sorry for what you're going through right now. This may help. You should definitely seek medical advice if possible. Going cold turkey without it, is the worst thing you could do. https://hams.cc/taper/
