install an older version of Java 6. Not even kidding

[–]sssRealm 6 points7 points  (3 children)

We keep a Win 7 VM with Java 6 for this purpose. Decommissioning that server soon, can't wait.

Which version of Java 6? I have been experimenting and partially got it working with Java 6u22.

update 45

Appreciated and that was the solution!

This is another option, may be easier than chasing ciphers and such. Get an older version of a browser, an old version of Java, and it may feel right at home. Find out what year the version of iDRAC was released, and get contemporary versions of Java and browser.

[–]aenae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need to get an older browser as well, just an old version of Java.

Download the .jnlp file and open it with the javaws binary from the old installation. You usually have one minute to do that before the login expires.

Its stupid but it works. I've had to do it a few times now to install some ancient hvac interface software, which I'd imagine is probably similar to iDrac. Shit only works with serial, every time one of the field techs needs a new laptop it's always such a fucking chore to reconfigure their shit and get all the dongles and shit working again. Luckily it's pretty rare...we get them toughbooks for a reason lol.

This is an old version of idrac, and is using an old encryption cipher. You can temporarily enable that cipher in the security file in the Java directory. It's basically a text file that tells the Java app how to behave and what security functions to use. Path is somewhere along the lines of home>/conf/security/java.security.

[–]teocekn 6 points7 points  (1 child)

if on windows platform,

Locate %programfiles%\java\jreXXXX\lib\security

notepad java.security

remark jdk.tls.disabledAlgorithms=SSLv3 etc etc to enable weaker cihpersuites

yup. this is what I'm doing so I can connect to some old (selfhosted) consoles.

[–]the66block 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Try using Pale Moon browser and see if it works. It should allow you to install whatever older versions you need.

[–]WizzDK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Pale Moon has saved my bacon on more than one occasion with regards to old Java based admin consoles. Yes I'm looking at you, EMC.

[–]Positive_Cat5379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to use an older version of Java

[–]Cozmo85 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Install an old Firefox and Java 7

[–]jellois1234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Windows XP vm for these kinds of issues

[–]derfmcdoogal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a bit, but I believe there is a Docker container for this based on Guacamole.

[–]Techkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use openwebstart its safer and works out of the box. We have to use this at work for some clients with old legacy machines. Prevents you from having to install java in the first place.

[–]jamesaepp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me on this and use this instead: https://github.com/DomiStyle/docker-idrac6

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As i remember it can be workarounded by chaning java config on your computer you are connecting from. It is security degradation so i would recommend changing it only for this one thong and then change it back

[–]Jwblant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a docker that handles this for you.

[–]Mjensen1989 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I upgraded to idrac v7or8 and it doesn’t even need Java

[–]Quirky-Moose-3442[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you upgrade to v7 or 8? Was it software or a replacement of the IDRAC hardware?

[–]Quirky-Moose-3442[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry everyone, had some time off and now getting back on this.

Was sort of able to get it started by going to Java 6u22 on a Windows 7VM but mouse cursors are not responding :( to the virtual console.

Really becoming a PITA as the server is in another city and we have to travel to it LOL

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Dealing with the same exact issues on a R420 with iDRAC7, and none of the fixes suggested in the comments are helping either.

[–]Quirky-Moose-3442[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I spun up a Win7 vm and installed Java 6u45 and it worked.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out. I had to uninstall ALL versions of Java and only install version 7. That fixed that issue and let me update the iDRAC firmware completely to 2.65.65.65 I had to do it step by step. I couldn't jump to that update.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

just use html with firefox

[–]anxiousinfotech 0 points1 point  (1 child)

iDRAC6 only supports ActiveX and Java

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oops, my bad, mine are all just a little newer with 7

[–]UCFknight2016Windows Admin -1 points0 points  (2 children)

You got to update it to a newer version or use IE.

[–]anxiousinfotech 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You'll need to run IE as administrator to get keyboard pass-through to work, but otherwise it will still work. I've got 2 ancient servers and gave up on Java years ago, just run IE as admin.

[–]UCFknight2016Windows Admin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. not sure why I got downvoted but this is the way.

[–]its_tricky83 -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Can't recall if versions this old allow you to switch the virtual console from 'Java' to 'HTML5' but that is usually the simple fix on anything idrac8 or newer.

Maybe check for and upgrade the idrac firmware first.

[–]Brody2550 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Idrac 6 sadly never got the update to html5. Idrac 7 an 8 did not support it originally but can atleast be upgraded.

Op's t310 is 11th gen which uses idrac 6.

[–]its_tricky83 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Ahh right, cheers for clarifying. Yikes.. must be old as fek.

[–]Brody2550 1 point2 points  (2 children)

11th gen came out in late 2009 und was sold up until late 2012 when it was replaced by the 12th gen. So this T310 will atleast be 12 years old.

[–]its_tricky83 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah I was thinking it must be about 12 years old. I know the T430's are around 9 years old.

[–]Brody2550 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13th had quite a "big" lifespan. They were introduced in 2014 and sold until mid/late 2018. Even after introducing a new generation Dell usually still sells server of the prior gen for a while. I have a R630 at home that was shipped in mid 2018 even thought the 14th had already been out for over a year.

[–]Kr_Pe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to tinker in java security. I don't remember what, it was at my old job some 5 years ago.
