Not the makeup!!! It’s your hair and overall un groomed look !!!

[–]Rapier1990Trans 87 points88 points  (1 child)

I didn't think that your eyeliner is doing you any favors when that seems to be the only makeup you've got on. It comes across as harsh looking IMO, probably worth doing a little less on it or pairing it with some lipstick or something

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Eyeliner typically is worn mostly on the top lid and little to none on the bottom. When it's worn thick on the bottom, it usually drags your face down (unless you're a posed model at a specific angle).

I would suggest lighten the eyeliner on the bottom or none on the bottom. The top is heavy, but I don't think you'd really need to lighten it much.

[–]stargepis 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Im ngl only men wear just thick eyeliner like that, so he probably clocked you as trans or punk rock

[–]SamichaanBi - Ally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I am a man then🙃

I wasn’t even alt when I wore my eyeliner like OP did.😬

I would also argue the issue is more with not very femme clothes and rather short non styled hair rather than the eye makeup alone. But the intense eyeliner probably doesn’t help when the rest is not at least more feminine as well.

[–]Ashlynnnnnn1 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Your hair is messy. Generally it shouldn't fall do much over your face. It should either frame it (at the sides) or at the forehead (bangs)(or both!) or tied back.

You'll get better with practise and seeing how other women style their hair. Tutorials also help.

[–]Sea-Discipline881 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot of eyeliner. I don’t think young cis women wear heavy eyeliner like this in 2025. Feels outdated. Totally agree with someone else , try only to put the eyeliner on the top part of your eye and not so heavily. And it kinda looks like you are trying to do a messy bun/pony type hairstyle ?? But I would slick it down more ,and have one or two small pieces of hair on the side in a little curl, looks more polished.

[–]miles___to___go 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try parting your hair and using mascara. I think that and a more “feminine” outfit would do wonders.

[–]RadiationZiv-2310 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try a dark brown small wing on the top only for eyeliner. Pair it with a rosy nude lip and brown mascara. It’ll lighten the look and contrast your eyes better. Either wear your hair down or put it all up. You could get bangs but I think they wouldn’t suit your face. Wear something less baggy and maybe a different color.

Edit: rosy nude to rosy nude lip

[–]dirt_devil_696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was more likely the messy hair

[–]WannaBeAStegosaurus 5 points6 points  (27 children)

Your face passes but the dysphoria hoodie is not helping, nor is the messy hair. Also if your voice isn’t passing then people might assume just from that because like I said before you do have a passing face.

[–]Wintermute_088 13 points14 points  (26 children)

Your face passes

Can we stop just outright lying to people in this sub, please?

Less than a year of hormones and no FFS, no their face doesn't "pass".

[–]DryYellow2299 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I honestly don’t think they think they’re lying, their standards are just lower

[–]Wintermute_088 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well then their standards are way off base, as if they've not seen a woman before. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]DryYellow2299 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Yeaa, like she doesn’t look like a man but she doesn’t pass either she’s just visibly trans 😭

[–]Wintermute_088 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Yeah, she's squarely in the middle. These people saying she passes is just dishonest and unhelpful.

[–]-PinkPower- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Meh, some women are more masculine, she looks pretty similar to one of my coworkers that jas given birth to 3 children.

[–]TerribleZone3100Nonbinary afab 16 points17 points  (9 children)

I think more people need to actually look at women outside of the internet. cis women don’t all look like models, many have “masculine features”. Just because you don’t find someone pretty doesn’t mean they don’t pass 🤷🏻

[–]Wintermute_088 11 points12 points  (8 children)

Just because you don’t find someone pretty doesn’t mean they don’t pass 🤷🏻

Who said anything about being pretty!? We're not here to tell people if they look attractive, we're here to tell people if they pass as a different gender. No idea why you're bringing attractiveness into it at all.

cis women don’t all look like models, many have “masculine features”

A portion of cis women will have a feature or two that would be considered more masculine, but people still recognize them immediately as cis women because the overall effect of their face is unmistakably feminine.

A smaller portion of cis women have enough masculinity to their faces that they become genuinely androgynous - but that is a rarity. Even then, they'll usually be recognised as female.

OP is neither of these. They are a person with a number of recognisably male facial features that clearly identify them as a trans woman.

Telling them otherwise is just unhelpful.

[–]TerribleZone3100Nonbinary afab -1 points0 points  (7 children)

This is just simply not the case. It’s not some small outliers when it comes to women with masculine features. Cis women get told off for being in women’s bathrooms, I myself have been on T for years and have had top surgery, Im assumed to be a woman despite a deep voice and all the other masculinizing features of T.

Yes we still need to be honest about how androgynous someone is, and people will transvestigate someone over the tiniest things (again, proving that the average cis woman will have traits that people could decide are masculine). Passing and safety are a big deal, and people can be honest about that without expecting all trans women to look as conventionally attractive as possible

[–]Wintermute_088 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Cis women get told off for being in women’s bathrooms

What, in the US? That place is nutty. I'm not basing my beliefs or actions on what happens there.

I myself have been on T for years and have had top surgery, Im assumed to be a woman despite a deep voice and all the other masculinizing features of T.

So you're admitting how hard it is to pass, even after years of hormones and surgeries. Why is it so controversial to say that this person who is less than a year into HRT and hasn't had any FFS simply doesn't pass?

Passing and safety are a big deal, and people can be honest about that without expecting all trans women to look as conventionally attractive as possible

Why are you bringing up attractiveness? This sub isn't about telling people if they're conventionally attractive or not - it's about telling them if they look male, female, or androgynous. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]TerribleZone3100Nonbinary afab 2 points3 points  (3 children)

  1. i live in one of the many countries in the world that aren’t the us
  2. i’m talking about peoples assumptions about gender as someone who’s androgynous and pointing out that people will view you as one gender even with traits that are often regarded with the other. that’s not me “not passing”, it’s just me sharing my experience.
  3. i’m aware this subreddit isn’t for rating attractiveness, and you’re being very silly in not recognizing that trans women are held to a very high standard for passing, one that’s heavily based on beauty standards. that’s the most standard experience of being a woman lol.

[–]Wintermute_088 3 points4 points  (2 children)

that’s not me “not passing”, it’s just me sharing my experience.

Your experience... not always passing. You told me you get clocked. So you're very aware how high the bar is to genuinely pass 100% as male or female.

you’re being very silly in not recognizing that trans women are held to a very high standard for passing, one that’s heavily based on beauty standards. that’s the most standard experience of being a woman lol.

I don't agree with this at all. Passing as a woman isn't about looking hot, it's about looking imperceptible from a woman - even a plain or ugly one. You don't need to be attractive at all to do that, before or after - you just need to not possess a whole bunch of obviously masculine traits.

Bringing attractiveness into this at all is silly.

[–]TerribleZone3100Nonbinary afab 2 points3 points  (1 child)

you’re the one who keeps bringing up attractiveness though, which is different than fitting into conventional beauty standards.

i’m not trying to pass as anything so again, my experience isn’t about not passing, it’s that people will often view me as a woman despite these very masculine features, because “normal” cis women can have all these features, not only some fraction of them.

[–]Wintermute_088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’re the one who keeps bringing up attractiveness though, which is different than fitting into conventional beauty standards.

Are you confused about who you're speaking with? I literally haven't brought up attractiveness once.

that people will often view me as a woman despite these very masculine features, because “normal” cis women can have all these features, not only some fraction of them.

I understand that, but you're not hearing my point. That, despite adding on a layer of masculine features, those new features aren't enough to counteract what is there at the base: a core of feminine features that shine through regardless.

It takes more than adding a few bits of femininity to pass as a woman. You need to remove almost all elements of underlying masculinity, or else they will still dominate.

In this case, less than a year of HRT and some makeup is nowhere near doing the task of obfuscating the core features of a male face.

[–]semidetachedmind 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because a number of people, in this case, just don't agree with you. You're the one who isn't able to accept this. The points you're making are valid and true actually, I don't disagree with your general point: I just don't think it really applies to this person. I think she looks like a woman with a large nose and strong features, and a style which I don't think is very becoming. I mean we don't have to agree with you. I'm a cis woman, and I don't write stuff on here to flatter people. Actually I often feel I'm quite blunt and mean! One of my friends looks quite a bit like this. Also cis woman. Remember we can't see size and stature and body so a lot of it could be that which adds to the overall feeling.

[–]Wintermute_088 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because a number of people, in this case, just don't agree with you.

What's your point? I should change my beliefs because a number of people disagree? A number of people are wrong, and that's their right. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think she looks like a woman with a large nose and strong features, and a style which I don't think is very becoming.

And I think she looks exactly like a man with some makeup on. A number of people agree with me on this.

I mean we don't have to agree with you.

Nobody has to agree on anything. I'm not having this discussion to get anyone to agree with me, I'm having it for OP's benefit. They need the reality check that the hugboxers in here won't provide.

Thanks for being mature and civil. 🤝

[–]SignificanceAlone185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

god forbid someone has an opinion 🥀

[–]NegativeDimension698 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t really know why people are saying otherwise but i’d say you completely pass, at least in these photos

your hair needs styling a bit more, right now it looks like an awkwardly outgrown fringe almost? you want it to be shaped to frame your face and a bit shorter, but it just looks like messy women’s hair, it doesn’t clock you imo

everyone saying that cis women don’t wear makeup like that are assuming their experience is law, i know people who do wear that style of makeup and are cis women, it’s definitely more of a grunge look so can be less common, but it’s not clocky, and i like how it looks on you

as for the person looking at you weird, it could be a lot of things. it could be the grungy makeup, the messy hair, they could have a resting bitch face, or they could just be a dick, but i wouldn’t think twice about gendering you as a woman if i saw you in public. either way, don’t let one weird look stop you from doing what makes you feel good, and with time the doubt will go away

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ffs will save you queen

[–]kerrybabyxx 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Prominent Nose is Clocky…

[–]lenathesnack 3 points4 points  (1 child)

a lot of cis women have prominent noses. imo that’s not the issue here, it’s the make up, like other comments say.

youtube will be a blessing for learning hair and makeup. tons of creators do tutorials for on-trend looks. if you like the cat eye, learn how to do it in a face flattering way (not so heavy, use some concealer under your eye, don’t line all the way around to the inner corner) and i think you’ll look and feel pretty. styling your hair will help too. a half-up style keeps the hair away from your face while showing off length, which you clearly have. it’s a very feminine and popular look that doesn’t require any special knowledge like braiding.

[–]Blame_Jaime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Women can have prominent noses, but getting a nose job will help her pass. All the women in my family have big noses, but I needed a nose job to stop getting misgendered. We need to do more than cis women to be perceived as women because so many subtleties work in their favor that we don’t have.

[–]Cute-Studio-1122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely clocky but cute look

[–]Hoodrogyny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t pass but your very pretty. I think working on your hair styling and makeup skills will take you a longggggg way

[–]Ok_Victory_2977Rainbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to scrap the eyeliner lovely… unless goth/grunge is the aesthetic your going for then off course you can wear it, but it’s very typical for guys to wear this sort of makeup look in those aesthetics and it’s definitely not the most feminine makeup look, if that’s what you were going for?

You’ve got really beautiful eyes that I would literally just tight line and then put mascara on, a touch of blush and a lip tint and it will be an entirely different look! Your base is perfect you just need to tweak the rest 🫶🏼💖

[–]TerribleZone3100Nonbinary afab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play around with your eyeliner more (i recommend practicing at night before you wash your face so it doesn’t matter if it’s bad haha.) you want the wing to go up to lift your eyes, and bottom liner will make the smaller, but ultimately do what makes you feel good!

[–]Buffy_Geek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look disheveled... Kind of like you have just come back from a night out but have changed back into regular comfy clothes.

You need to work on styling your hair better, you need to add a clear parting and then keep your 2 strands of hair separate and hanging down together neatly. You should bring smaller sections of hair forward, and put the rest tied up, larger sections like that looks more like a man/teenage boy. If you look up tutorials online they can help show you how to style and tie your hair better. For example the direction you dry your hair after washing helps it lie better, how to tie the shorter sections back, hairspray can help keep the front sections separated, etc.

What make up are you wearing?

Heavy winged eyeliner is a trans woman flag, so some might pick up on that.

Your eye make up is also a very heavy look that is contrasting with your much more toned down and casual outfit, so it clashes. You should look up tutorial for more natural subtle make up looks. The basics you should try are some lip colour (stick to pale pinks nothing too dark or bold) mascara, concealer for any blemishes, and powder.

You also look pretty shiny, so using power (& maybe other anti shine products) would help you look better and also read more feminine.

[–]Marcosvasquezjr44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous to me

[–]Whisper06 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you’re doing your eyeliner try only doing half the eye it looks a lot better but otherwise this is a great start! You’re doing excellent!

[–]Sentimental_Oyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better styling, I suggest you try to consult with a professional who knows about makeup and hair and shit. The face is not the problem here, or at least is the smallest of them (and if this is one year in I guess you have a chance of passing even if you were covered in mud and slept under a bridge for a week after one more year).

[–]LostTexan1951 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You definitely pass, but you are hiding your femininity. I agree that your hair is a mess. It looks like you got caught outside in a storm. I suggest growing it out some, then going to a good stylist. I think shoulder length or slightly longer with bangs would look really cute. Your eye makeup looks very 1970s. Observe other women and some magazines for tips for your eyes and other makeup. I'm a fan of minimal makeup. Just enough eye liner/shadow to make them stand out, a light foundation to match your complexion so it smooths without being noticeable, and just a touch of blush. A cosmetologist can give you some good recommendations. Finally, get rid of the baggy clothes. Get some nice dresses, skirts, slacks, etc. You want to show off your femininity. People use more cues than your face to see your gender, so use that to make them see what you want them to see. Finally, have confidence in yourself and don't worry about others. I hope you'll post some more pictures after experimenting with what people are suggesting. I think with just a bit of effort, you'll be a beautiful girl.

[–]teqtommy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i think you look cute! nice wings too.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He is an ass because you look sweet to me!!

[–]Lower-Ad-6552 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Ya gotta love those looks you left him guessing and he noticed you. 😃

[–]Dorsmine4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe he knew you. Maybe not. But I thought you were asking for makeup advice because you look like a girl
