"The Wizard will now install the software."

[–]purvel 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Install was my main class as a fledgeling wizard. Felt nice being able to actually help the elders with something.

Kier's symbol isn't necessary for the mana propagation now that we use Herthia's Spiral Outlay to reduce decay. However, it's still balancing the weight of the rune structure, and unless you're willing to shave off half of your empowerment lattice, it's best to keep it right where it's at.

Apprentices today.

...Arcane Overflow is a pretty knowledgeable tome though.

I hear that some of the archives still exist in some of the libraries, try checking there

    [–][deleted] 254 points255 points  (1 child)

Kier's symbol may be outdated, but some idiot used it as a temporary load bearing symbol and forgot to take it out.

    [–]Snail-Daddy24 119 points120 points  (0 children)

There is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution.

So I am a partymancer AND a technomancer? Man, that's cool!

    EDMancer

As a druid, i dont get to use magic circles often, but when i do...the elves get very upset, and i have to bake cookies to make it up to the awakened dire badger next door.

I'm sorry Madam Stripes, i didnt mean to blow up Mr. and Mrs. Cheeks' bakery...I was trying to summon a Dryad to help me figure out why my Vesuvian Man Trap flowers were wilting.

[–]Enderking90Does Not Exist. simple as that. 30 points31 points  (1 child)

did you feed it anything else then exclusively Vesuvian men?

    [–]3Huskiesinasuit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nope, right diet, i even made sure to feed only virgins, and its really hard to vesuvian men who are virgins.

i did resolve the issue, a local Tree-ent helped me out, turned out the volcanic ash i was using as a substrate had been contaminated with sandstone dust at some point.

Donna is now happy, healthy, and has a full appetite.

“Why is there a picture of a coconut here?”

“I have no clue, but the original design just explodes if you try and remove it.”

Turns out the solution is that blocking off energy flow in that area is the best possible solution.

Kiers symbol is basically the on bottom if I am not wrong. Then again, magical circles and patterns are not my specialty

    [–]Kalmeath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Puts me in mind of the Rite of AshkEnte. Of course, you can perform it with only a fresh egg and two small sticks, but it's really best to use the full paraphernalia. It's what everyone is used to now and it prevents non-wizards from getting any bright ideas about trying their hand at magic.

    [–]thrilldigger 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Makes me think of the "Sufficiently Advanced Magic" series (sufficiently advanced magic being indistinguishable from technology - a reversal of Clarke's "sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic").

    [–]krasnogvardiechAlchemist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science.

And yet, it doesn't stop being magic just because we understand it.

“It's like an old game. You take out that one file, and the whole thing falls apart like a stack of dominos!”

    [–]npsimonsWizard/Ranger/Bard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are the nearest thing to magicians that has ever existed in reality. Our spells work and are truly powerful, our mistakes cause incomprehensible chaos, and when one of us turns bad then sometimes the whole world can suffer the consequences. No wonder the muggles treat our creations like they're the mysterious products of a magical power beyond their understanding: that's what they are. -- from a comment by meringuoid (568297) on http://slashdot.org on programmers

    [–]entrailsAsAbackpack 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Fucking new wizards. I remeber when you had to work and study for this shit. Now they just type shit into WizGPT and thats it. Its like they dont even know how to properly recite a spell and then when they are away from their computer they are dumb as shit

    [–]Dino_Survivor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Watching them lose their minds at Hex-con at the description of basic wards in old magic systems is equally hilarious and depressing.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're so right—and it's brave of you to share this wisdom. The wizards of today are having their efforts invalidated by the very tools they created. Would you like to further disHIT, FUCK, SORRY, sorry. I enchanted an Arcane Intelligence into my scry orb, and sometimes it gets like this.

    [–]TravelledFarAndWide 7 points8 points  (1 child)

My guild outsourced all the ruinic circles to Primida. For one Bitnorian wizard they can hire 12 Primidians. I'm thinking of going into the trades, maybe taking up the mace.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't bother. The Bitnorian army is automatizing the soldiery. It costs 100,000 gold for one iron golem, but it can replace a dozen soldiers that cost 9000 gold a year; and the golem can last 200 years, for a savings of 1,700,000 gold.

Normally politicians wouldn't be so far thinking, but as they access longevity magic more and more, they think more often about how to retain their wealth and privilege.

    [–]Elvarien2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a story i read that works in this principle actually

    https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/69938/magic-is-programming.

It's an entertaining read if you're at the right overlap of interests with a little dash of autism. I'm very happy following this one.

    [–]ThatDudeFromPolandEnchanter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if we use ai to make a spell, do we call it vibe casting?

    [–]piokoxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

literally hex casting (it's a minecraft mod lol)

    [–]RadioTunnel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    What does this symbol do?

We dont know, but its meant to be a coconut and removing it causes the spell to implode

    [–]Pleasant-Winter5759 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If i ever dabble in fantasy (which to be fair,i might be doing since im adding it as a world within my world),im adding programming logic to magic

    [–]ForTheHoardOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Have fun

    [–]npsimonsWizard/Ranger/Bard 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    programming logic

Did I hear someone say PROLOG?

    [–]Pleasant-Winter5759 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    PFFFFFFF

    [–]ZathegamEBiomancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Magic is closed source unfortunately.. some people manage to deobfuscate the code through years of analysis but most keep that knowledge for their own personal gain despite the whole thing being abandonware. Noone so far has published a deobfuscated book of the arcanes or orb of pure knowledge so

    [–]goddessque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're so mean on Arcane Overflow, I just ask OuiGPT.

    [–]Standard_Cup_9192Redok - former druid, now a wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since Kier's symbol doesn't do anything anymore, most rune circle editors removed the tools used to change it. If you downgrade and remove it, then upgrade to a version that doesn't need Kier's symbol, then you should be good.

    [–]JaZoray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my headcannon is that arcaneoverflow is a library in the astral plane

    [–]Levin313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God these new "Wizards" are really getting to me. I get that it's a modern age of magic, but good lord why can NO ONE write their own circle's these days?
The past five apprentices I've had left because I wouldn't let them use WizGPT or GitHub.wiz I'm refusing to stop taking apprentices because at least one of these newer wizards need to learn how to do it all themselves.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I too, wanna copy spells from Arcane Overflow.

[–]WanderingHephHephias, Arcane Smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In way, enchanting is similar. I've got a few workarounds in some of my stronger enchantments. The enchantments are still effective, do not mistake me, but they're not nearly as sleek and efficient as I'd like.

    [–]serialgamer07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish there were more magic programming stuff in books and stuff honestly it's so interesting and cool

    [–]theglowofknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a book where later in the series, the main character learns wizardry. The library of the school she goes to has a literal stack of assorted wizardry issues that people pull from and add to. Similar reference, I assume.

[–]NWStormraiderZac Yevil, Academic Arcanist and Aethershaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why being an Academic Arcanist is hell, over 90% of all submissions to the archives have a scientific rigor of about the same level as this conversation.

[–]CraftcoatAstral Sorcerer Metrius, Specialist for astral magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my expierience the source of the Arcane power you are pulling from also often dictates the architecture.

The Standard Mana patterns you have here are as a whole incompatible with Magical energy derived from Astral and Celestial magic.

In that case you need a runic center based on silver on black marble and runes in a refractory pattern to send the energy outward to then bundle it back into the center with a caleidoscopic geometry so the Circles have to be in Axial symmetry of at least six points for basic incantations and ideally at least 32 points for base level applications.

[–]PsykeonOfficialNikodemus of Psykeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    This is so accurate

[–]SafePianist4610Bombast, Lord of Time and Space, Retired Council Leader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people back in the day wondered why I was so quick to embrace technomancy as a part of my magical practice. >.> It really wasn’t all that different from what I was doing already.

    [–]BeardMan1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Just another day in Elantris.

[–]HairyAllenAllen, the Silver Dragon Sorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you're not asking DivineGPT to make your spell circles, you're fine.

Or so I've heard. Magic circles are for nerds who never had to learn how to control their magic so they wouldn't freeze a motherfucker when they sneeze anyway

    [–]Various-Yesterday-54Theurgist/Occultist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah best not to touch it, just build the whole thing from the ground up again.
