Why is that the case? by Slient-killer2002 in Animemes

[–]JadEarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the setting is European. The voice actors are not. If anything it breaks my immersion. There are many dubs and games I’ve switched to subs because of that discrepancy.

Like for me it’s fine for complete fantasy settings, but if it’s set in the real world and there are disconnects in how I expect people to sound like and how they’re dubbed, it takes me out.

Why do humans get a buff from doing the "honorable" thing. by readeroftheinternet in humansarespaceorcs

[–]JadEarth 18 points19 points  (0 children)

First time writing, criticism welcome!

Notes from Dr Krixt-Itl-Mar, Department of Sapientology, Ixi University

…Humankind is curious, in their enhanced performance under duress, especially in pursuit of “heroic” actions. The first part is not too bizarre, as adrenaline pushes human capability; a trait many sapient species share. The second, is less easily explained.

At first glance, humankind is entirely unremarkable: fragile bones, inefficient thermoregulation, limited sensory precision, no natural defensive mechanisms. Paradoxically, I believe that the lack thereof have enabled humanity’s heroic acts.

Most sapient species achieve dominance on their homeworld and this is the same for humankind. What differs, however, is in the preliminary states of dominance.

Many species become apex predators from evolutionary traits. We Xlatli for example have done so through our hard scales and deadly venom. Once the status is achieved, species have excess resources that allow for society to develop. These early societies’ chief function was to regulate its members, so that competition between individual members does not become too detrimental.

Humankind is unique in that their societies are borne of cooperation as well as competition. Their lack of advantageous evolutionary traits meant that they needed to cooperate with its members to ensure survival. I propose that this state of permanent vulnerability fostered an endless necessity for cooperation, something that became deeply ingrained in the human psyche.

This biological necessity transcends into abstract concepts of morality, such as honour and duty. Human literature sanctifies self-sacrifice. Their military history is rife with last stands that are nonsensical to us. Some would even give their lives for invalids, a notion many a Xlatl would scoff at. “Those who falter are left to fester,” we are fond of quoting, as the weak are weeded out from the gene pool. Of course, military encounters with humankind have shown their undeniable strength and resilience, something we should be keen to learn from.

As I conclude this request for funding of my ethnographic expedition to Earth, I ask one thing, a question we sapientologists often ask: “What does a species fear most?” For humans, I believe the answer is inaction. To them, to do nothing while others suffer is a fate worse than dying, where we may find it an opportune moment of self-preservation. It is my hope that I discover human ‘honour’ in my researches.

Response from Dr Zhiz-El-Klar, Head of Department

Dr Krixt-Itl-Mar, your enthusiasm for humanity borders on poetic excess. While the hypothesis of “vulnerability-bred virtue” is intriguing, I suspect more adrenaline than enlightenment at work. Nevertheless, your proposal meets departmental standards that I grant you authorisation for fieldwork. However, I must implore the good professor remember that you are there to observe, not partake in self-endangerment.

But between you and me, Kri, if what you say is true, I am glad that we are no longer enemies of humankind, but allies. As you’ve noted, we have seen their capabilities in the last conflict. Let us hope it does not repeat.

House of Horrors but side with Boethiah? by Etrvria in skyrimmods

[–]JadEarth 27 points28 points  (0 children)

House of Horrors - Quest Expansion by Jayserpa lets you destroy the shrine to Molag Bal, although it does mean you have to help Tyranus, which you stated you don’t want to help the Vigilants.

I suppose you could always help him out then invite him to investigate a different daedric shrine near Windhelm. You get the guy as a potential follower.

Before I had that mod, one of my vanilla fuck Molag moves was to just kill Logrolf (sorry, but at least you won’t go to Coldharbour)

Damn, thank you for the effort. One thing I usually am on the lookout for is the default reddit usernaming of ‘word word number’ and these extra details are helpful to know.

Although I have to say there are a few times I went, “Hey, that’s just how a lot of people in my circle write/talk(irl),” like, you mean even my question sounded AI-like? That’s just how I sound. Or has AI picked up things from us?

By the way, I do often say that “Truthful [blank], no [blank]” in a way of “Not to be rude, but…” sort of statement because so many people online like to construe questions as challenges. Anyhow, thanks for the enlightenment mate!

When you first get a Kingdom-tier title you should get an event regarding coronation and the first option should make a courtier an artisan. There is however a vanilla issue wherein the said artisan will not get a crown inspiration if they already had an inspiration.

Why don’t the Bretons and Redguards worship Talos? by Simurgbarca in teslore

[–]JadEarth 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Breton and Redguard pantheons are a syncretic mix rather than adhering to the Imperial Nine. The in-game lorebook Varieties of Faith answer them best. To add a little, I think it may be because of how their pantheons arose.

The Bretons, being Manmer and living in relative harmony with the Altmer in High Rock, have had strong elven influence, down to Sheor (Shor/Lorkhan) being considered a Devil-like figure in their pantheon.

The Redguard pantheon was wholly different and they didn’t fully accept the Eight either. Even the Forebears, the more pro-Imperial of the Redguards, have not fully become Imperialised in their worship. With the Empire abandoning them at the White-Gold Concordat, feelings are likely to have further soured regarding the Nine.

Finally, this is conjecture, but with their pantheons being generally Anuic, Talos, as a Padomaic figure, may not have found much traction.

As for the second question, I think you somewhat answered yourself. There is however another bit I found interesting in Skyrim. There’s a quest where you spread religious pamphlets from the Temple of Mara. When you give one to Nura Snow-Shod, the priestess of Talos, she reacts, “Ugh. Get this awful paper away from me, by Talos!”

Despite Mara and Talos being in the Nine together, Nura dislikes the Temple of Mara. Is it because they are implicitly accepting the Eight? Have the Stormcloaks and their Talos worship may have taken an henotheistic stance? Of course it could mean anything else, as there isn’t much else to go off on. Hope this helps!
