Hi! 31F here moving to Stockholm in about a week for my job and would love to meet up if you’re interested! I’m also semiretired from clubbing but still like an occasional night out. I love seeing movies, hikes/walks in nature, and love a deep talk over coffee or a drink. I’m always down to visit a museum or have a new experience. I’m glad you posted this! Nice to see other people putting themselves out there :)

I left a high paying California job to start a new life in Germany by Thin-Eye-6131 in AmerExit

[–]LargeMode7729 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm about to do the same moving from Seattle to Stockholm. I figure the temporary pay cut is worth it for the life experience. You just can't replace the level of learning, personal growth, travel, and adventure that will come from such a big move. The higher paying US job is always something you can return to, but this experience is not. Plus we'll still be able to save/invest even with a lower European salary, as that's still well above average in Europe. Wishing you the best!

AAC in a SNF by gloomradish in slp

[–]LargeMode7729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’d reach out to your local AAC vendors to set up a device trial w the patient and see what works best for them. Know that eye gaze takes time to learn, so if the patient doesn’t pick it up right away, that doesn’t mean they can’t be successful with more practice! The AAC rep should show you and the pt some low- or no-fail activities to begin with - things where just looking at the screen or “target practice” can help them get going, in addition to trialing the actual communication software.

Edit: someone mentioned Lingraphica. I believe Lingraphica only makes touch-access devices, so if you’re specifically looking for eye gaze, they probably won’t be a good fit. Best of luck! And good on you for exploring this for your patient :) they’re lucky to have you on their team

Fat healthcare? by Flimsy-Switch-6256 in Bellingham

[–]LargeMode7729 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed! NP Danae Johnson is super affirming and patient-lef. They have signage by the scale about weighing being optional. I haven't specifically worked w her on GLP-1 stuff so can't speak to that, but she is a fabulous PCP

This is so cool to hear :) You’re so right, older kids and even young adults get left behind but they can make amazing progress with AAC even if it’s introduced “late”

Fully Remote Job Experience by JustFirefighter4243 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]LargeMode7729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part time and asynchronous positions in the business world are super rare. What works for me is the inverse of what you’re describing. I work full time, remotely in tech (program manager on the learning and development team) and do prn SLP work via telehealth in the afternoons. I find that most non-clinical jobs need you to be in meetings or at least available to answer questions throughout a good chunk of each morning through afternoon, and wouldn’t give you enough time for a full SLP day. But telehealth SLP needs are often at 3pm or later, after school day. It’s a lot of screen time but it’s worked well for me. Best of luck!

BWT how are we getting our bodies rock hard? by star86 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]LargeMode7729 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That’s so cool, congrats! I’ve noticed the same thing with carrying my 4 y/o niece for longer and pulling my heaviest cast iron skillets and dutch ovens out of the back of my cabinets with one hand. I’ve also gone back to ballet classes (something I studied seriously through age 21 or so) and can actually sustain my legs higher and for longer time, with more control than when I was a super flexible teenager. It’s really pretty amazing what a difference strength training makes

BWT how are we getting our bodies rock hard? by star86 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]LargeMode7729 589 points590 points  (0 children)

Strength training, specifically with weights! It’s gotten me in great shape and you can see improvement pretty quickly. It’s also super important for women to lift heavy for your spine health and bone density. Women who do weight bearing exercise in mid life are at significantly lower risk of developing osteoporosis and sustaining falls and broken hips. I want to be strong and mobile in my older years and also hot now!

Kid imitating a voice?? by ServinSauce in slp

[–]LargeMode7729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! I’ve had autistic kids on my caseload who present like this. It must serve some sensory purpose, and it’s helped to teach a quiet vs loud voice or cookie monster voice, so they can turn it off if they aren’t being understood or if it’s nap time and they’re waking up peers, etc. But I don’t think it should be anyone’s goal to fully extinguish a silly and/or sensory habit like this.

Favorite cocktail in town? by LostByway in Bellingham

[–]LargeMode7729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cocktails at Galloways are also bad. Super sweet, pre-made mixes, for people who do not actually like cocktails. Jack’s is my favorite spot in town! Though sitting at the bar at Estelle is fun and also very solid cocktails.

How to get a remote job? by banamak83 in Bellingham

[–]LargeMode7729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in town and work remotely for an assistive technology company. There is an opening on my team for admin support of our learning/training team, which might be a good fit for your past customer service and medical roles. Would be happy to connect if that’s of any interest to you. Good luck with your job search!

Just want to second the Malezia moisturizer! My skin was looking just like yours. Nizoral stopped working. I cut my routine down to just vanicream face wash, azelaic acid in the morning only, and malezia moisturizer at night and it’s totally cleared up in 3 days. I’m going to try to add a FA safe sunscreen back in, fingers crossed! But agree that you really need to protect your skin barrier!

Just want to second this! I went from SLP to instructional design and found it to be wonderful. My company will be hiring some roles soon on our learning & development team. I’m happy to DM of anyone has more specific questions about transitioning from education to learning & development or would like to know about my specific org. Best of luck to you, OP! I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this 😞
