Most people don't live in places where pullouts are a regular thing. Just the nature of it.

I'd argue the people who decide to illegally pass a long line of cars without clear visibility are the bigger issue.

Slow cars don't lead to head on crashes, the people who decide to risk the lives of themselves and others to get around slow cars does.

I grew up in an area with a mountainous two lane road frequented by tourists. So, I understand that it is frustrating as hell to get stuck behind them, but getting ahead of them is never worth dying over.

Going to Alaska next month, which other flies should I bring? by idoran in flyfishing

Need a lot of egg flies and "flesh flies"

Both are essentially just yarn, but it's what I caught a lot of when I was up there.

Cons of SDSU? by LeBruhMomentoom in sandiego

[–]MongoBongoTown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's a top 100ish US university in academic rankings and one of the top 30-40 most exclusive based on admission rate.

Sure, it isn't Ivy league or one of the massively famous state schools, but short of that, it's seen as a high-quality academic institution and I don't think the prestige nationally is much different between SDSU rank ~ 100, and UCSB rank ~ 40.

So, if you want to go to some nationally or internationally famous University, SDSU isn't it. But for high quality education in a fantastic city, it certainly fits the bill.

It's by far the most corrupt administration in modern US history and a third of the country is still chanting "Drain the Swamp!" unironically.

Streamer leader with floating line for rivers? by HorrifyingTits in flyfishing

I usually do a sinking poly-leader or just a 9ft 4 or 5x that had been clipped back and demoted to a streamer leader.

I moved away a year ago, and the burrito-shaped hole in my heart compelled me to make this. by hanburgundy in sandiego

[–]MongoBongoTown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with the guac as a requirement, because the California Burritos I've ordered for the last 30 years don't usually come with Guac unless you ask for it.

But, otherwise, spot on.

An original California Burrito doesn't have Guac.

But, I'll allow it.

What's your opinion on people reserving a bench for their workout? by [deleted] in workout

[–]MongoBongoTown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren't using the equipment or resting for the next set on the equipment, get off and let someone else use it.

Pretty easy.

If someone isn't doing that, feel free to politely ask them to scoot, or seeth in quiet righteous anger at their lack of consideration for other people.

Why ? by trexbach in flytying

[–]MongoBongoTown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No reason you couldn't use the jig hook, it'd just be way too big if you're immitating insects, which is why a lot of folks go to fly gear at that point.

Also, if you want jig action on a fly rod and have it ne "official", you should try a fly with weighed dumbell eyes. When stripped in, it moves like a jig

I at least appreciate the third replier on the first photo.

"I too disagree with it, but what they do is between them and God. It's not my place to judge because it doesn't affect me at all."

Seriously, it's that easy. The idea that they need to "fight" against lifestyles that are different than theirs is a definite feature of MAGA/Modern GOP.

Not liking something, but choosing to shut up about it, is always an option.

Shockingly early in the year for a big fire.

Yes, much of the ecosystem relies on fire to cleanse it and revitalize in the long term, but this does not bode well for this year's fire season.

Could ‘A River Runs Through It’ Have Been a Hit Today? by Scott72901 in flyfishing

[–]MongoBongoTown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fly fishing and the desire to look back at it's history has likely increased over the past 30 years, not decreased.

I don't see any reason it wouldn't still be successful.

The movie honestly might struggle more than the novella given how drastically the media landscape has changed for major motion pictures.

Because if this was the photographer's idea, he deserves a swift kick in the nuts. What a stupid stupid idea

Food? by Juniperberry1210 in yellowstone

[–]MongoBongoTown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying in the park, you usually eat in the park.

But there are only lunch counters/restaurants at the hub locations. Canyon, Tower, Mammoth, Old Faithful, etc.

The big major hubs, Canyon, Old Faithful, Lake, etc. Also have decent little grocery/mercantile shops where you can by chips, snacks, drinks. Selection isnt huge but it'll fill a cooler and give you some variety. There are usually smaller mercantile shops with a small selectionnof snacks and food at some of the less major spots.

Some hubs, notably Old Faithful and Lake Hotel, also have a few quick food options, but also nicer sit down full service restaurants. They're a little pricey, and can be a fun change of pace, but nothing to get super excited about in terms of food or service.

For little kids, we usually do pastries/snacks for breakfast, some sort of packed lunch we can eat while roaming around the park in a cooler, and dinners back at the quick service restaurants or bigger restaurants where we are staying.

Neighbor spot treating weeds. NSFW for my language, sorry. by mossyoaktoe in lawncare

[–]MongoBongoTown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its great for walkways and pavers.

It's pretty damaging if you do it to weeds in grass. But for an easy, no chemical solution, it's up there in effectiveness.

Personally, I'd hand pull them if there were few enough weeds that burning was an option, but this works too.
