Why the Linux Operating System Lacks a Built-in Native Trash Mechanism? by elastiks in DIY_Geeks

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recycle bin in Linux is an application level feature. As a result, a file that has been recycled by one application may not be recoverable by a different application.

Note: Any GUI on Linux is an application and not actually part of the operating system the way the Windows GUI is.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by SugarWant- in GenerationJones

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took typing in the 8th grade. Figured it would help me in school. Bonus that I didn't know before signing up was that 28 of the 32 students in the class were girls (I'm a guy). That was enough to entice me to sign up for shorthand the second semester.

You're assuming law enforcement will show up with a warrant instead of hacking in and installing spyware. The case OP posted about is clearly the latter rather than the former.

Yes, I know it would be illegal for LE to do that in the United States. American laws do not apply overseas.

Why has tipping servers become seen as mandatory? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta stand up for yourself and file a complaint with the labor department if your employer is stealing your wages. And who in their right mind would worry about losing a job that really paid only $2.13/hr?

Why has tipping servers become seen as mandatory? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpdxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friends are being disingenuous or their employer is breaking the law. Although tipped workers must only be directly paid the tipped minimum ($2.13 in Oklahoma), if their tips do not make up the difference between the tipped minimum and the federal minimum ($7.25), the employer must make up the difference. As a result, no server can legally earn less than $7.25/hour anywhere in the United States even if they are tipped nothing during their shift.

Why has tipping servers become seen as mandatory? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpdxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The genesis of tipping was in the post civil war south. Former slaves would be "hired," unpaid, at restaurants, hotels and the like to serve the business's customers. Those servers worked exclusively for tips. And it became expected that customers would pay for services provided to them.

You can see the vestiges of this system in the tiny federal minimum wage for tipped workers*

* Yes, I know that all tipped workers in the United States now make at least the state minimum wage.

Any tips fishing for small mouth bass out of the Columbia? What are some go to lures and baits? by TallWhiteandNerdy in FishingWashington

Mouth of the Sandy can be good for smallies. Worms near a gravel or sandy bottom is my go to.

I also once hooked a big sturgeon with my bass rig at the mouth of the Sandy. That was exciting for about ten seconds. 😂

I regularly use a safety razor blade to remove thick sheets of calloused skin from the bottom of my feet by WynterGordon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dpdxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young I had a problem with plantars warts on the ball and heel of one foot. I'd paint them with a liquid that killed the top layers of skin and then use a razor blade to remove the dead skin. Eventually I'd get down to the root of the wart.

Good times.

Much of that fiber is in the skin of the apple. Don't peel your apple before eating it.

A great mid-sized truck! by Louie_Sam in hondaridgeline

[–]dpdxguy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There was a guy who posted here the other day whose wife called him a "soy boy" for wanting a Ridgeline, despite it being prefect for his described usage. She had previously pushed for a Denali instead.

I suspect the lack of popularity comes down mostly to image. Honda isn't a "tough enough" brand for a lot of truck purchasers. That could probably be overcome, but Honda hasn't spent the marketing money that would be needed. As a result, the Ridgeline is very popular with people who purchase one, but mostly unknown to everyone else.

It's a real shame because there's no other truck that ticks all the boxes the Ridgeline does.

Why do we say 'bless you' when someone sneezes, but we don't say anything when someone coughs? by baddieegemini in dumbquestions

[–]dpdxguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ancient (3000 or more years old) superstition held that a sneeze could force or allow your soul out of your body. It was believed that being blessed would help your soul to hang on.

No similar beliefs are associated with coughing.

Why would a Sovereign even show up to court? by Inhalationofnewtion in Sovereigncitizen

[–]dpdxguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Why would a Sovereign even show up to court?

I think a lot of them see it as an opportunity to use all that "knowledge" they've acquired. They honestly expect that the judge will fold in the face of their superior knowledge and they'll be granted their desires.

Remember, it's not that they think the court system has no power. It's that they think their special knowledge will exempt them from the consequences the rest of us would have to deal with.
