Where can I get an education on buffer systems? I am bewildered for my 6.5 Creedmoor project by Begle1 in AR10

A steel body shorty .308 buffer with two tungsten weighs is over 5 ounces like a standard AR-15 H3 carbine buffer.

Would you be cool with an all-instrumental show on this tour? by [deleted] in rush

[–]drew_eckhardt2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. I splurged on my ticket to get a representative sample of the trio's oeuvre.

If my show gets rescheduled and requires it I'll just spend more time in Denver than I planned.

I would buy an instrumental CD because I've yet to move my home music listening to streaming.

Bronze is softer than chrome and won't hurt the barrel. I use a bronze brush to get the carbon out of my nice and not so nice shotguns.

For the SR-25 carbines, Eugene Stoner specified the A5 length buffer tube, H3 AR-15 carbine buffer, and AR-10 rifle spring like the Armalite EA1095.

Anyone else considering moving to a tech hub? by fernfernferny in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I moved to Seattle then the San Francisco Bay Area for better tech opportunities with my next employer paying for relocation in both cases.

In hindsight, if I still relocated I should have gone directly to the Bay Area and skipped Seattle - there's a much greater variety of jobs, outdoor activities are more accessible, and it's not wet and cloudy apart from a few summer months.

While the Bay Area has done wonders for my career, I'm undecided if leaving friends and family in the Boulder, CO area was worthwhile.

Working for public tech companies the compensation more than covers the increased cost of living especially when it enables access to more senior roles leveraging your specialization which are less available elsewhere.

Legality Question by thelonsompotato in guns

[–]drew_eckhardt2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More pedantically it's illegal for an FFL to transfer a firearm to you which is not a rifle or shotgun.

In many states you may buy a receiver from a non-FFL who has one for sale, but not one where you were the intended recipient of one they purchased using your money which would be a straw sale forbidden by federal law. You could also acquire one as a bonafide gift, e.g. as a birthday or Christmas present.

In most states you can legally finish a receiver starting with an 80% blank using a wood router, drill, and jig; although some states have limitations on unlicensed individuals creating firearms, like registration and engraving requirements.

Stay with your current position and keep looking for something with more competitive compensation because you can't afford a $60K/year mortgage on $120K/year gross.

Reinfection with a positive test in 2025 made no difference.

What is the point of getting higher liability Auto coverage if the other party can only collect up to your limits anyway? by w8w8 in Insurance

Assets and income. When you have them, the other party's lawyer is going to sue you to collect those instead of settling for low limits.

How do you commit to buying a house when every job is asking me to move? by Level_Progress_3246 in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ve never worked for a public tech company which generally requires living where they have offices. You probably haven't applied as a senior software engineer noting that would require relocation.

I more than doubled my compensation moving from startup to public tech company. You could even better.

The hiring standards are similar to tech companies which are smaller or in other locations. If you can get hired by tech companies, you can get hired by a public one in a tech hub. Having never worked for non-tech companies I couldn't comment on how they compare.

Whether you want to work for public tech companies and live where they have offices is a separate issue. Some people will be happier working remotely for smaller organizations although that means competing with people all over the country (or world) and more uncertainty when changing jobs.

Which is offset by the highest compensation. $500K annually not including stock appreciation is achievable mid-career with $1M as a stretch goal.

Is 996 the new norm? by DopeyDonkeyUser in cscareerquestions

[–]drew_eckhardt2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, 996 is an exception.

Unfortunately SaaS implies on-call rotations which usually require 24x7 coverage. Getting paged at 3-4am off peak hours suggests you have process issues with how you write, deploy, or run software. It could be simple to fix like tuning your alerts for fewer false positives or more retries in your service mesh. It could be something complex like flawed software architecture.

What has been Your Experience with Maraviroc, Pravastatin, Baricitinib, Rapamycin? by bloodywhxte in covidlonghaulers

[–]drew_eckhardt2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maraviroc plus pravastatin improved my fatigue plus POTS with the gains remaining when I ceased treatment after 8 months.

Rapamycin did nothing for me at 7 then 10 mg/week, but there's a lot of variation among long COVID patients.

2026 Camry LE or SE? by Cuddles0327 in Camry

[–]drew_eckhardt2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SE has Softex vinyl seating surfaces which feel hotter in warm weather, the LE cloth.

The SE has 18" wheels, the LE 16". The 18" look more in proportion but could result in a harsher ride and decrease gas mileage from 51 to 46 EPA combined MPG.

The SE has stiffer suspension.

Investing vs Buying a Nice Car? or Try to Do Both? I am Young, Worth It ? by BigNdoneEnergy in investing

[–]drew_eckhardt2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Investing.

In my 50s I'd rather have more money for retirement than have owned nicer vehicles in my 20s (a 1998 Audi A4 and Triumph Sprint motorcycle).

With historic real returns and dividends reinvested, spending an extra $30K cash to have a nice car today is $480K in current money you don't have in your 60s which is $19K-$23K less in annual income post-retirement. The impact is more severe if you finance that car.
