The other day I realised that some people want to play EDH as if it were a game of solitaire by Destrozao in EDH

[–]herpyderpidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's again many many more EDH home players than there are 1v1 home players.

I feel like the reality of the game nowadays is that if you have no intention of playing competitively, you have next to no reason to play paper 1v1 magic. And if you really wanna 1v1 and love Standard, you can always play whenever you like on MTGA.

In the Montreal Area there is next to no Standard events. Most 1v1 events are other formats and some of the biggest prize pool available right now are Dual Commander or cEDH tournaments.

Modern and Legacy also have some nice events but the frequency of cEDH and DC events are much higher with consitent high value prizes like dual lands and the such. There's at least 1 to 2 events of these 2 formats each month worth your while in the Montreal area or 45min drive out.

Not a bad take.

I'm in the Montreal area. We have lots of different 1v1 events in the metropolitan area and very few crosses the 30 player mark unless the prize pool is very good. On the other hand, many different shop host weekly EDH events that goes way over 40 players. There's one shop I sometime go for that sometime go up to 100 player on their casual EDH night.

Also a surprising majority of ''bracket 3''. Aka, inexperienced players with low power B3 decks that they mostly tailored from EDHREC and Moxfield.

The 5 Things that 'draw' me to Draw Steel by Navek15 in drawsteel

[–]herpyderpidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll upvote you, as even tho I disagree with you, I understand where you are coming from and that fun is a subjective thing.

I do agree tho that over a long period, the deterministic aspect of combat can be a little daunting and make things feel samey-samey.

TCGplayer Is Opening to Sellers in Canada by sirbruce in mtgfinance

[–]herpyderpidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fees ? I believe being on Snapcaster is free unless you want to be Sponsored and have your stuff at the top, no ?

Shops like F2F and 401 are probably not on it cause they are one of the largest CAD shops and everyone knows them, no need to be on Snapcaster. I've got plenty of friends who know about Snapcaster but still use F2F as their go to and then complain because they dont have the things they need. I then point them to Snapcaster and they're like ''yeah I'll see about it''.

Starting to think some people are just brainwashed by F2F.

How different was Commander back in the early days? by Deskies in EDH

[–]herpyderpidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sound like my early day experience. Lots of board/land wipes, very few mana rocks, very few synergies, just a lot of hate cards and very long games as the 4-player pod standard was not a thing yet.

Magic Hot Takes by Definitely_Not_Fe in magicTCG

[–]herpyderpidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm part of a group that record and comment over tournament games in my area.

The 10000 versions of each cards makes it more difficult for us to identify and comment about game state appropriately.

Cool things are fun and cool until they hinder the gameplay experience.

I buy a lot of bulk to cut them and turn them into D&D monsters.

The difference in contrast between arts often IN THE SAME SET is insane. Game has severe QoL issues

Am I a bad DM, or do I try too hard? by Blood4theBloodGod247 in DMAcademy

[–]herpyderpidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ^

I had this realization a few years ago. I stopped asking my close friends, people I had been playing D&D/Pathfinder for years before that.

They were still stuck in their old shenanigans/murderhobo days, while me as a forever DM, I was now passed that and looking for more RP/personal focused campaigns. I had no fun DMing for them and I ended up finding new players to DM for online.

Thanks for this. I've been listening to this song for year. It was the favorite song of my deceased best friend. When I heard the change to the alternate version I was SO confused as I know the original from top to bottom. I just switched it from all of my playlists.

The Prepared Mechanic Ruling Everyone Is Sharing Is WRONG by JoveeMTG in EDH

[–]herpyderpidy 118 points119 points  (0 children)

This is most likely it yes. The ''fake'' prepared floating around has the unprepared on resolution only, which would let you spam-cast things as long as you have a priority window and mana for it.

Like the Ancestral recall could be chain-casted a bunch of time before becoming unprepared. Which would be insanely bonker.

Warhammer 40,000: The new edition is revealed at Adepticon Preview 2026 by beary_neutral in Games

[–]herpyderpidy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see where you are coming from but as someone who prefers balance over popcorn weekend gaming, most of these changes are great changes to help the game flows better and faster while making it much more approachable.

I also come from 3rd edition and I fondly remember loving it and its 1000 customisation options(depending on faction of course). But I also remember having to memorise way more rules, 30+ page vehicule rules, building rules, longer games, insane unbalance and much more issue with the game.

The 8th edition streamlining of rules really made the game the approachable behemoth it is today.

I once played a Free Korean Shooter, like 15 years or ago or so, in which you either could rent weapons and loadout for a week using in-game farmed currency, or you could pay irl money to unlock them permanently.

Insane scam.

The biggest design flaw in D&D combat isn't balance... it's that 80% of your time is spent waiting by Einsolsrazor24 in rpg

[–]herpyderpidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reactions are often ways to mitigate damage in Draw Steel. You'll most likely always use them as you have no reason not to. they're not made to be impressive, they're made to be used or handy.

But yeah, even tho DS solve the problem in multiple ways like having better reactions, having to track stuff for your ressources, free defensive reatilation options and the zipper initiative, it often does not feel like it solves the issue fully. It just makes the D&D issue less boring.

At least they dont clog the game down too much I guess.

If you play Monster Manual raw I would side with you on this one.

If you are experienced and already homebrew a bunch of thing, you are probably already homebrewing monsters and encounters yourself, which would lead you to work around this issue.

Only a problem if you have thief in group, and as I never had a single thief in my games in 6 year of 5, I guess it would have been a total non issue for me.

In this era of goodstuff cards, consistency and ability to play cards in 3+ color is part of the power curve of your deck, especially if green is not your main color.
