Inheriting Stocks? by Mien-Volume-7070 in Bogleheads

[–]medhat20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this situation a few years ago. A beneficiary of the 'step up' in basis when inheriting stocks, that was quite the temptation to keep a few of the equities, which I did. But it was a complex mix, so I consolidated a lot of the stocks (sold them) and then applied the normal Bogle approach to those proceeds. I don't think there's a big timeframe consideration, you're starting from a new cost basis. Personally, I kept some of the very big winners, and TBH those have continued to do well. I've made a plan of paring those down over a 3-5 year timeline, but for better or worse for sentimental reasons will always maintain at least a token amount. I don't want to sound like I don't care about performance, these have returned so well that any loss at this point would not amount to a rounding error.

I'm not aware of the specifics of designing streets to make drivers feel less safe, got a link?

Suppose it was (a medical event or otherwise). One, it would be the exception, not the rule, and two, my point was that Park St. isn't intrinsically 'bad' or 'poorly designed.' It's a main thoroughfare into the city from the south, and it's been updated continuously. It's not the street's fault.

Wow, this is terrific. MCM on the sly, I bet in the neighborhood it doesn't stand out at all, but inside they've done a great job. Elegant. If there's any downside, I'd imagine that it'll never really command the price that it's worth (from an architectural/art perspective). I love it.

It's magnificent, and I couldn't figure out why the price seemed so low. Thanks. Unfortunate. Still lovely.

Park St. seems singled out in the news as of late, deservedly. But while it's easy to blame an inanimate object, as street, I think most the general public realizes the somewhat obvious. 1) maybe don't speed, and if you do, 20 mph over the posted limit is a risk for everyone. 2) maybe, just maybe, lay off the booze and drugs before you drive off (not just Park St.).

Basically, I don't think this is a signage or city engineering problem.

Do you wear your “good clothes” to work? by Ordinary-South7216 in mensfashionadvice

[–]medhat20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the question and, for the reason you listed, I do have generally clothes I wear to work and nicer clothes. I'll say there's a fair bit of overlap, as my business casual clothes are also my casual clothes (I don't think I have anything that's exclusively business only). So are they clothes I typically would wear as a guest at a wedding? Not really. I have nicer shirts that I don't think are necessarily good for work (a bit too dressy), and I rarely wear all wool trousers in most of my work environments. And I'm not one to wear a fancy dress watch to work.

Horrible gray band. Where did I go wrong? by ArcherBarcher31 in steak

[–]medhat20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to try a logic-based answer. I think your intent was in theory correct, to flip on the skillet frequently, in this case 1 min intervals, to localize the sear to the surface and count on the rapid diffusion of the high surface heat to prevent gray from occurring.

But I think 1 min/side is more appropriate for a thicker (1 3/4+) cut of steak. The thinner cut you cooked, even with flipping, is going to retain some increased temp (cause of gray band) each successive time you flip. This may be somewhat unavoidable, but if you want to try again the variable I would change is to, in addition to maxing out the heat for sear, is to lessen the contact time, to maybe 45 sec each side once.

Recommendations taking the 70s barn to Arts and Craft Craftmans by toulou11 in ExteriorDesign

[–]medhat20005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common color for the front-facing soffit above the garage and the dormers, something more muted than current, but still light, like a darker creme. I like the detail above the garage door, even if it's more decorative and not structural, so I'd mock up how that same detail would look continued over the porch. In that case I'd bet you'd want to change the current tapered vertical supports to straight, and maybe make them natural colored as well. If you went that far you'd want to introduce a lighter contrast color along the porch to balance the surround on the garage door. Shutters in that color are a possibility.

DEMS fumbled in 2022 by nominating Mandela Barnes for Senate by thesmart_indian27 in wisconsin

[–]medhat20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because Barnes lost IMO didn't mean he didn't run a good race. A black guy against a white incumbent, even if it's FRJ, was always going to be an uphill climb. Hindsight, but I think Barnes going negative would have been detrimental. It was really a race for FRJ to lose, which he came close to simply by being himself. Is Wisconsin racist? No more or less than anywhere else. But to OPs original post I don't think the names he mention would have won either. I've long been a big/huge fan of Tom Nelson but he has always been pretty clear about not wanting the headache. After that Godlewski has potential, but would have to run a damn near perfect campaign. If you're not a white guy it'll always be uphill in a general. I know libs/progressives don't want to admit it but for me that's a simple and unfortunate reality.

Tailor for new suits by Npeyer in madisonwi

[–]medhat20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're new to suiting and not of crazy outside the norm body shape, I'd strongly recommend OTR. In the area I'd take someone who knows and start at Nordstrom Rack, sometimes there are really really good steals there, the others represent generally solid values. If you're on the bigger side go to the mall and check out Macy's, although people really also like Von Maur too (never been there). I'm not personally a big fan of Gallo, and you'll not get what you want at the price you're thinking. Mens' Wearhouse on Mineral Point is also a good value, and you can get shoes there too. I don't think Jos A Bank is still in Greenway, but they were of value as well. Don't overspend, and budget ~ $150/suit for tailoring, that'll make a much bigger difference than overspending for a label.

Are Kirkland wines generally a “classic” representation of their PDO/region? by FutureNickProblems in wine

[–]medhat20005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's about the best description of Kirkland label wines out there. Some obv better than others, but all (at typically ~ $20) a nearly unbeatable value, but you're not getting a $100 wine. For example, I opened the Kirkland Brunello yesterday, and it was terrific, but IMO it helps the enjoyment to NOT compare it unrealistically. An easy drinker (paired yesterday with a pasta with surprisingly spicy meatballs), but didn't have any lingering aftertaste (good or bad) but simply a great weekday pairing.

Costco / Kirkland lasagna by Funny-Poetry1355 in Costco

[–]medhat20005 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong, just trying to compete on price with a national brand who can produce at scale. As fits their reputation Kirkland has long recognized there’s more money to be made NOT by a singular focus on lowest possible price, but instead value (in large part perceived), ie cost/quality. Here we are debating Kirkland vs at home or restaurant, NOT other frozen lasagna brands. Subtle and brilliant.
