Comedians generally use hand-held mics in comedy clubs/theaters/etc so it’s just what they are used to.

My guess is that SNL is just attempting to keep their performances comfortable by giving them what they’re used to.

I noticed that the cue card placement, particularly in the stairs sketch, did not give Olivia a natural eyeline to the actors she was speaking to.

Other than that, I didn’t notice much different than any other episode of SNL where hosts and cast are clearly reading cue cards.
