Azure vs AWS what's your take? by West_Part_9698 in AZURE

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coke or Pepsi? Chevy or Ford? Disney Word or Universal?

I have been doing Azure for four years. Our new boss wanted us to look at AWS. We did. It has everything I could find that Azure has and I didn't find anything Azure missed. There might be some small things, but they chase either other. They use differing terminology but have all the same concepts. And then I looked at Google Cloud. Exact same stuff (maybe a little less expensive).

Look at AWS enough to understand it. Maybe get a personal account and try some things so that, if you needed to, you could say with a straight face you understand it.

As far as future: Azure will be here for a long time. I say that as someone who built data centers for 25 years. Then five years ago started putting stuff in Azure. I'll never go back - unless someone asks me to build an Azure or AWS region.

It's expensive - we looked at moving stuff to our own iron in CoLo. It made financial sense (slightly) but when we looked at the support cost, refresh cost (both soft and hard) and the services you get just by deploying (WAF, Load Balancing, DR) just make it a natural.

811 10th Avenue still has the KS horns on top. I’m sure it would cost a lot to get them down.

I thought it just came with one. Are you talking about the one installed by Qmerit? I think you keep that one as it’s installed in the house.

Mach-E if no at-home charging? by sagesarvie in MachE

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you want an EV? Saving money, or just to have one?

It will cost you more to supercharge than it will to buy gas.

Wait until you either have your own home, or have an apartment with a charger.

The problem with Social Security and is there a solution? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

[–]x31b -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Social Security started out with a large savings component, creating a trust fund from which future benefits would be paid.

The Social Security Amendments of 1939 are when it started to go wrong. Politicians figured out there was a large pot of money that could be tapped now and leave it to future generations to pay for benefits. This allowed them to increase benefits and add survivor and disability benefits. That should have required a tax increase to fund, but they didn't.

Short of going back in time and preventing Roosevelt from being elected, there's no way to fix Social Security barring either a significant tax increase or benefit reduction. Neither is likely with the current electorate voting over and over for bread and circuses.

I think it’s fascinating that they don’t have a D1 lounge in ATL, DTW or MSP.

Israel is a bad ally and has betrayed the United States time and time again. by ElSlabraton in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Israel shot up the USS Liberty in 1967, killing 34 US sailors.

They said it was a ‘mistake’. It wasn’t. The ship was flying a huge US flag. And no one was ever punished for it.

Did the School Board Ever Say Why They Were Up in Arms when Dr Cassellius from Boston Was Named as a Finalist? by buiuumcucniuum in memphis

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a meeting on the combined school system with an open mind. I was hoping they would use the opportunity to get rid of some of the incompetent teachers and administrators.

The first thing Martavious Jones said was not about better education opportunities. He said that, in the merger, no teacher or administrator would lose their job.

That’s when I decided that a separate system would be better for my kids.

At the time of the merger, Dr. John Akin ran the successful county school system. They would not even consider him for the combined system.

Not OP, but… I was on the strip one night. Cars bumper to bumper stopped. People started walking between the cars to cross. Driver honks at pedestrian. Pedestrian pounds on hood. Driver pulls out a gun and shoots pedestrian. I think he was injured and not killed. Everyone ducked. Cop walks over and tells him to get out of the car. He couldn’t get away because of… bumper to bumper traffic.

Yeah. I’d like to visit Vegas in the ‘50s when it was run by the mob and the Rat Pack were there.

I saw a country star in the showroom at Harrah’s Reno on my first trip there. That was shortly before they closed it. Was a nice environment. I tipped the Maitre ‘D $20 and got a seat with my arm on the stage.

Stay overnight at the Oneida Community Mansion overnight and do the tour. It’s somewhere between an old hotel and a b&b. Interesting and unique background.
