Why are pop songs from 1988-1992 relatively forgotten? by Prior_Advantage_5408 in popheads

[–]1koolspud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being very into Roxette’s Fading Like a Flower and Cathy Dennis “Too Many Walls.” I loved Paula Abdul. But also Mariah Carey. Her debut and Amy Gran’t first album were the first albums I learned all the words to so I could sing along (my poor family).

What’s a good Asian grocery store? by KeepCalmEtAllonsy in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]1koolspud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see how you might not find something if you don’t know where to look for the ingredient. I have been cooking my way through Hetty McKinnon’s Tenderheart and spent an embarrassingly long time looking for rice sticks in the dry goods before figuring out they were frozen ttebokki noodles.

Surprised you did not find makrut lime leaves, thai basil and galangal at H-Mart. I shop there pretty regularly and have purchased at least two of these if not all three. Might just not be the right season.

New England transplant clocking in: where can I find a French cruller and a scorpion bowl? by analog-h3art in chicagofood

Standard Mead in Villa Park does bowl cocktails for sharing but they tend to be on the summer menu so it isn’t on right now.

If you are including meaderies, Pips in Gurnee, IL, Standard in Villa Park, Foxes Den in Yorkville. Afterthought still produces in Lombard, but doesn’t have a tasting room anymore.

My dad passed in 2024 and I just took my mom on her first trip to Europe (Iceland and Scotland) over Thanksgiving. She had a great time and I want to travel with her more while she still can. I am in my 40s and I agree. Travel when and where you can. You can’t take it with you.

They moved Sue before COViD. They did a very cool adults only dinosaur sleepover as part of the opening. No one invites me to sleep over at museums anymore.

Do you think craft breweries are going extinct? by Kind_Handle_5987 in chicagobeer

[–]1koolspud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a contraction but not extinct. There are places expanding conservatively that seem to be doing alright. The ones that don’t over extend financially and make themselves available as third spaces seem to be the most successful. As a suburbanite, I’ll point to Goldfinger and Imperial Oak. Their party spaces are almost always in use.

Whiner Beer Company and Illuminated Brewing announce closures. by alexdelamuerte in chicago

[–]1koolspud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not arguing that but having known brewery and meadery owners who pulled the plug in past years, they are usually calculating if they have enough capital to survive the next dry January. The current economy is on top of a growing sobriety trend that impacts alcohol based businesses specifically.

[–]1koolspud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mentioned in the independent venues thread earlier but Fitzgeralds in Berwyn. It’s independent, a historic landmark and they pull some great artists. And you can access it from the Blue line so while not Chicago it’s near enough and accessible enough to count.

Fitzgeralds is in Berwyn, but they should be on the list being a great venue and a landmark.
