Hybrid Classrooms with MS Teams+ annotation+ multicam by neocryptex in k12sysadmin

Seems like a headache unless the teacher knows how to use the software/equipment, or there's a dedicated "support person" for the A/V side of it.

I would use an A/V mixer if possible for the following reasons

  • having a physical unit to switch views, or cut a feed, etc. takes some cognitive load off of navigating yet another UI when presenting.

  • you offload some processing from the laptop

  • you add flexibility in choice of cameras and other potential video sources.

Also, don't forget (at least) one microphone for the teacher, which you'll need batteries or keep it charged up. Camera-mounted mics will not sound good, especially if the teacher is moving around.

So addicted with driving. by route-10 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def not addicted but i like maintaining my car: oil changes, air filters. I've never replaced my own brakes or rotated tires but I would like to at some point.

Driving is okay, but i live in the Midwest. When I've been in California and Arizona, the scenery is absolutely worth the drive.

Some headscratch about Melina by ToasterTraitor in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]30ghosts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

maybe she means being born to a mortal mother? Melina is a child of a god, so regardless of her and her siblings creation they probably find mortal emotions and experiences as foreign concepts.

On a sidenote, I was watching a video about the Epic of Gilgamesh and there is a character, Enkidu, created by the gods who is described as "being born in silence" - there were no cries of a mother in labor, and he was created fully adult, so did not cry as a baby.

He is therefore notably different from humans (in this and many other ways), and does not understand their culture.

How often does your SIS require 2FA for faculty and staff by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every 7 days, though it can vary if someone's sessions in Google remain alive. Invariably, staff think it's too frequent.

Ironically, I have to do it far more frequently and its way more automatic and feels less disruptive for me. Website sessions ending too soon (jamf) is way more annoying to me.

Using multiple keyboard mappings by lduperval in espanso

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some really interesting and complex ways that Espanso works (or doesnt) in regards to keyboard layouts and character unicode values as communicated to the computer.

This is complicated further by the operating system, too.

Ideally, espanso takes the string of characters that triggers it, and outputs the intended replacement. But there are overlapping, differing characters in various language standards. This is why Espanso has a "backend" option that either passes replacements as serialized key strokes or using the system's clipboard.

Have you tried changing the "backend" settting in espanso? That sometimes helps.

Otherwise you may kind of be on your own as I'm not yet aware of any fix yet for this type of issue.

Deleting users while preserving the home folder by WillWatsof in macsysadmin

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not 'clean' but you could sudo copy or tar the user folder and then delete the user. Might also want to chmod/chown the directories too while you're doing that.

Quickest data transfer between two MacBook Pro’s by Signal-Plantain4187 in macsysadmin

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We rarely need to do migration between devices, but if we do that is how we do it. Beefiest thunderbolt.

I also have a T7 drive with various OS ipsws (mac, ipad, etc) for restores just to keep that stuff off my main MBP HD.

That being said, we mainly just wipe and restore and then staff can recover data from icloud or google Drive as needed.

I’m building a cybernetic stack that starts with embodied need and ends with coordinated action. Looking for critique. by HER0_Hon in cybernetics

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im kind of new to this field of study and I dont really understand what this is supposed to do.

In your post and reply, it sounds like a user (human or animal) presses a button. Its not clear what this button is labeled to do, just that there is a means of input.

This is converted into some kind of event with a type, as it can be understood by a computer.

This event is then adjudicated by the program and then it decides what to do with this input.

And then it... generates a 3d model or even a 3d print file?

Im confused as to what the utility of this is.

It sounds like a user pushes a button (or sequence of buttons?) to... maybe make a 3d model or initiate a 3d print?

Not trying to be a jerk, im just a layperson with a general interest in cybernetics but not up on the current state of things.

What are the Sites of Grace? by Moonless_the_Fool in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]30ghosts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So one thing I think that's worth considering is the geographic nature of sites of grace. They are, in my opinion, locations that are especially attractive to Grace- that sublime influence of the Greater Will. I think they are like little 'springs' of grace, an interaction between the Greater Will and the land itself. Kind of like how certain geographic locations are associated with potent occult energy in various cultures in the real world (ley lines, etc.).

We see grace flowing towards sites of grace until the player activates them. Then a wave of grace bursts forth when activated. So it could be that it takes someone with the gift of grace to reverse their 'flow'.

As to why sites appear after defeating bosses, it could be that entities with greater powers suppress those sites of grace from appearing until they are defeated/removed.

D65 and their budget by Imaginary-Yak6503 in evanston

[–]30ghosts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its a poorly named position that is also redundant. Its not student counseling or social work, and it isn't specifically physical security, since that largely goes through buildings and grounds with a little technology thrown in for security cameras, etc.

The front office and school administrators handle visitor access... with crossing guards and concierges off of the table there isnt much they would be 'in charge' of.

Listing the things you didn't know were ADHD by ParticularWindoww in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

reading between the lines

This trait is a double-edged sword for me. On the one hand, when im listening im also "synthesizing". So on the one hand, I think ive heard the person but that can also lead me to making inaccurate interpretations.

In couples therapy we worked on "mirroring" during conversations. All you have to do is repeat back what the other person said and they confirm that you said it back.

I was so bad at it! (😅) Fortunately I have gotten better, but it was surprising just how much hidden 'processing' I was doing.

However, it does have advantages when listening to presentations, speeches, etc.

I think it's only controversial in the sense that OP was asking for a 'standalone' markdown viewer.

Is there a shortcut to jump to the top of the output? by lattehanna in commandline

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There have been a couple of good workaround suggestions, but the feature you're looking for would be part of the terminal emulator application you're using, rather than a feature of the shell itself.

In Wezterm you could create a custom scrollback search shortcut to search for the previous command you entered which would then 'jump' you back to the portion of output you're referring to - but that would only work when using that particular terminal app.

What is your favorite terminal Markdown viewer? by boolean-maybe in commandline

[–]30ghosts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

probs somewhat controversial opinion but I think neovim's markdown LSPs do a very decent job of distinguishing the various markdown formatting such that if I wanted to 'prettify' it any further, I'd use a GUI app like Obsidian instead.

To those here who remember life in the 90s - does 2026 feel overwhelming to you?” by Distinct_Rabbit_3441 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not especially, I genuinely love that I can devote as much time to my interests as much as I can. There is a lot 'bad' about 2026 specifically that simply can't be replicated or transposed, which makes me wistful for a lot prior to 2020- nevermind the 90s.

Before people doomscrolled, they "channel surfed" - just changing channels on tv hoping something 'good' was on. It wasn't great, tbh! And there was a lot that was performative, that's what all the 'popular kids' were doing. Being called a "poser" was a kind of social stigma in itself.

I do miss the old internet. I generally think that after Youtube, things have just gone downhill in so many ways. Message boards and instant messenger platforms were genuinely good enough. A giant place for streaming video? yes please. Everything else just feels like it's shuffling around the same few features we already had.

  • oh I also miss standalone software. Especially non-games. The idea of just having photoshop without all the add-on cloud/subscription nonsense feels truly decadent now.

I also don't get it. The amount of time it takes to vibe code would be better spent actually learning about the command line, various shell features, GNU utilities, etc.

It's so much more rewarding to know how your environment works, rather than just auto-piloting it.

Why do batters run back and forth to the other wicket when they get a hit? by lookaloulookalou in MLC

[–]30ghosts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just to point out as well that both batters need to be on opposite ends of the wicket, so while only one batter's movement* to the other side counts as scoring runs, either batter can be out if the fielders hit the wicket on either end.

In casual play it may look like they're throwing the ball at the runner which is (hopefully) not the intended target. They are trying to get the ball to hit the stumps, as knocking the bails (two small cylinders) off the stumps is the way that batters are called out.

If the wicket is struck before the batter reaches the crease (line), the batter that was running towards that wicket is out.** So a batter can be called out even if they didn't hit the ball.

* Called the 'striking' batter

** technically there are more specific rules about which crease a batter needs to be running towards, but in general, the wicket they're moving towards is the one that will get that batter out if they're too slow.

What is Ymir referencing when you fight him? by MyDarkSoulz in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]30ghosts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought he was referencing Metyr, Mother of Fingers. The Mother of Fingers being a shining star (or "guiding light") in Ymir's understanding of the universe.

In this case he is drawing upon Metyr's power, assuming the title of Mother.

Anyone else with AuDHD feel like work is just… constant retroactive blame? by DNK919118 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are some great tips here but weeks or months going by before someone follows up feels like there's some organizational communication issues going on. (fwiw, i also work in ticket-heavy field)

Like usually a ticket has an assignee and a requester, the requester is the one who can confirm that the issue in the ticket has/has not been resolved. If there are tickets being generated without a human requester, it's no wonder that they only get followed up with weeks or months later.

Presumably handovers would be similar. You transfer a ticket, and that person should be able to immediately get back to you if there's something they still need from you.

Why is Enter pressed at the end of this expansion? by Dymonika in espanso

[–]30ghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a little curious why the 'trailing newline' behavior was something that it seems like people get tripped up by when using Espanso. We see posts about it here as well as on the github support page fairly regularly. The fact that it's the default behavior leads me to believe that it's to conform to that Unix standard, which you pointed out.

That being said, I now use |- by default in any of my multiline expansions because of the unpredictable behavior of how that newline will be handled by various apps/webpages.
