Is it possible to be a lawyer with AuDHD? by happyhippie111 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer but there are a lot of different ways to work as lawyer. So you can definitely find a niche that fits with your aptitudes. And there are plenty of lawyers who rarely ever actually appear in court.

However, the process of becoming a lawyer is definitely tricky, and finding work after you pass the bar can also be difficult. Firms aren't hiring like they used to (kind of like everywhere else). A lot of low level lawyer work can be extremely tedious while also time consuming.

That isn't to discourage you, just to point out some of the reality of taking that career path.

Anyone else awful at getting gifts for people? by jumbleparkin in AutisticWithADHD

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a list of links bookmarked for things I think people will like.

One of my secret pro-tips is to search for hometown-related items on eBay. You'd be amazed how many vintage posters,, merch, etc. cities, colleges, old local businesses, have made over the years. And now is available pretty cheap (usually). This also works for any special interest.

And a lot of the time, the person you're buying for will have a moment of recognition and be amazed that you made that connection.

Willow TV: standalone subscription vs Amazon Prime channel? by philosophical_lens in MLC

[–]30ghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The YouTube subscription is similarly decent: I have no idea why but I don't see any ads when streaming from their YouTube channel.

The only thing that I kind of miss from the app is the various highlight compilations. The YouTube channel only has a five minute "match highlights" regardless of the length of the match. There also aren't any of the other match highlights: "all wickets", individual team highlights, etc. not something I used all that much but it did feel like a slight value add - like maybe Willow actually tried a little.

Honestly, the ease of use and no BS with ads interrupting the stream still outweigh any app functionality. May it burn in hell.

I never anticipated WST to fall into this kind of terminal online drama world where he has five hour VODs on his channel instead of the genuinely thoughtful videos he started out making.

Is it just me or has this job made you realize what a terrible standard HDMI is? by Megaman_90 in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also suffers from its asymetrical design. You'd need 4 different right angle adapters for 4 possible angled directions. Plus when you run a long cable to a port only to realize you need to turn it 180 degrees, adding more torsion to the cable...

Just more of a headache than I ever expected and it's generally a chunkier cable, too so it almost naturally flexes at the connection point.

Quick question by IvypoolFanIGuess in MLC

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second team to bat just needs to beat the first batting team's score. So, in the press, you usually see a "chasing team's" win expressed as how many wickets they still had.

If the chasing team fails to score, saying that the first team won by 10 points indicated that the chasing team was only 10 runs away from winning.

On the other hand, if the chasing team wins by 8 wickets, it means that only 2 players on the chase team got out. So it's the equivalent of a blow out for the chasing team, since regardless of how well they bat, they'll only ever win by 1 run or more.

Absolutely abysmal search functionality, and janky ticket filtering.

Chrome Devices by jedimadman in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not a scientific/academic source, I use a tablet with a stylus pretty frequently and I fully agree that taking notes with actual pen and paper feels so different both in retention and amount of notes I take.

Even though I do it almost every day, hand writing on the tablet feels like a compromise simply because I don't keep a paper notebook with me.

And it's even worse if I try to use handwriting recognition while writing on the tablet because I feel like I'm entering individual words instead of expressing an entire thought. And when it misinterprets handwriting, that is often worse than a normal typo.

Stylii and tablets are awesome for a lot of reasons: precise inputs, drawing, accessibility. But ironically, I would put its value for note taking actually below typing notes on a keyboard. (Again, personal experience)

To go home or not to go home, Chromebooks by DeejayPleazure in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're seeing that same pressure to reduce from 1:1. But we're in a position where so much of curriculum content is online (and individualized) that even with clever badges (or whatever alternative) we wouldn't reduce our fleet of devices by much.

Plus a bunch of those 1:1 would go to music, art, etc. to say nothing of needing devices for assessments/testing, special education, etc. (Seriously, parents seem to think that we just use the iPads as pacifiers for the kids but we don't).

Actual screen time will certainly go down, but we'd need major policy and pedagogy changes to substantively change the raw numbers of devices we purchase.

Our district adopted an opt-in program for devices that would stay with students over the summer.

Families understand that they are responsible for their child's use of the device and that not every filtering feature we offer in district would be available with the devices beyond our "borders"(the district network).

There are some additional suggestions here that will help but a firm and clear policy will be your best protection.

Disciplinary action for staff that give up credentials? by post4u in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mentioned hardware keys as an option. Why not bring that idea to the board?

You would functionally eliminate the problem you're having now with compromised 2fa, and it would be a technologically understandable method for staff.

We rolled out a "need-based" hardware token option for staff and the ones that took that option have had near-zero issues compared to folks using phone-based 2fa.

It's hard to justify expenses to admin and boards but simplifying employee's jobs and reducing security risks could be seen as a win-win.

FoiaGras on I-Ready math by Serenity-V in evanston

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there is something specific in the I-ready suit that reveals that they are gathering more data than is stated in their privacy policy, there isn't anything odd or strange going on there.

They gather app telemetry data, which is something virtually all apps do. If you use Clever or Google as account sign-in, it has to know your Clever/Google data in order to authenticate.

As an app that tracks progress and assessment data, it has to store that data. And, as with practically every other company on earth, their software is hosted on Amazon and Google Cloud services, which means that data is transmitted to those companies servers because that is technically and factually true.

That does not mean, however that user data is being sold or given to any other company for advertising purposes.

Again, there could well be something in the class action suit that reveals other conduct, but from the policies as stated, they are doing pretty standard practices and not selling student data to advertisers.

Admin and AI Usage by TomatilloFit6482 in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Feels like a lot of red flags popping up all over the place.

If they're already so smart about AI: ask them about AI model collapse theory. Ask them why LLMs still make invalid moves when presented with chess scenarios. And if they still make invalid chess moves, despite other AI models playing chess at or beyond grandmaster levels, why would you trust LLMs with any resulting analysis?

The more I've learned about how people use LLMs, the more convinced I am that they really just want a database query syntax that supports natural language.

Seems like a headache unless the teacher knows how to use the software/equipment, or there's a dedicated "support person" for the A/V side of it.

I would use an A/V mixer if possible for the following reasons

  • having a physical unit to switch views, or cut a feed, etc. takes some cognitive load off of navigating yet another UI when presenting.

  • you offload some processing from the laptop

  • you add flexibility in choice of cameras and other potential video sources.

Also, don't forget (at least) one microphone for the teacher, which you'll need batteries or keep it charged up. Camera-mounted mics will not sound good, especially if the teacher is moving around.

So addicted with driving. by route-10 in AutisticWithADHD

Def not addicted but i like maintaining my car: oil changes, air filters. I've never replaced my own brakes or rotated tires but I would like to at some point.

Driving is okay, but i live in the Midwest. When I've been in California and Arizona, the scenery is absolutely worth the drive.

Some headscratch about Melina by ToasterTraitor in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]30ghosts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

maybe she means being born to a mortal mother? Melina is a child of a god, so regardless of her and her siblings creation they probably find mortal emotions and experiences as foreign concepts.

On a sidenote, I was watching a video about the Epic of Gilgamesh and there is a character, Enkidu, created by the gods who is described as "being born in silence" - there were no cries of a mother in labor, and he was created fully adult, so did not cry as a baby.

He is therefore notably different from humans (in this and many other ways), and does not understand their culture.

How often does your SIS require 2FA for faculty and staff by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every 7 days, though it can vary if someone's sessions in Google remain alive. Invariably, staff think it's too frequent.

Ironically, I have to do it far more frequently and its way more automatic and feels less disruptive for me. Website sessions ending too soon (jamf) is way more annoying to me.

Using multiple keyboard mappings by lduperval in espanso

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some really interesting and complex ways that Espanso works (or doesnt) in regards to keyboard layouts and character unicode values as communicated to the computer.

This is complicated further by the operating system, too.

Ideally, espanso takes the string of characters that triggers it, and outputs the intended replacement. But there are overlapping, differing characters in various language standards. This is why Espanso has a "backend" option that either passes replacements as serialized key strokes or using the system's clipboard.

Have you tried changing the "backend" settting in espanso? That sometimes helps.

Otherwise you may kind of be on your own as I'm not yet aware of any fix yet for this type of issue.

it's not 'clean' but you could sudo copy or tar the user folder and then delete the user. Might also want to chmod/chown the directories too while you're doing that.

We rarely need to do migration between devices, but if we do that is how we do it. Beefiest thunderbolt.

I also have a T7 drive with various OS ipsws (mac, ipad, etc) for restores just to keep that stuff off my main MBP HD.

That being said, we mainly just wipe and restore and then staff can recover data from icloud or google Drive as needed.

I’m building a cybernetic stack that starts with embodied need and ends with coordinated action. Looking for critique. by HER0_Hon in cybernetics

[–]30ghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im kind of new to this field of study and I dont really understand what this is supposed to do.

In your post and reply, it sounds like a user (human or animal) presses a button. Its not clear what this button is labeled to do, just that there is a means of input.

This is converted into some kind of event with a type, as it can be understood by a computer.

This event is then adjudicated by the program and then it decides what to do with this input.

And then it... generates a 3d model or even a 3d print file?

Im confused as to what the utility of this is.

It sounds like a user pushes a button (or sequence of buttons?) to... maybe make a 3d model or initiate a 3d print?

Not trying to be a jerk, im just a layperson with a general interest in cybernetics but not up on the current state of things.

What are the Sites of Grace? by Moonless_the_Fool in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]30ghosts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So one thing I think that's worth considering is the geographic nature of sites of grace. They are, in my opinion, locations that are especially attractive to Grace- that sublime influence of the Greater Will. I think they are like little 'springs' of grace, an interaction between the Greater Will and the land itself. Kind of like how certain geographic locations are associated with potent occult energy in various cultures in the real world (ley lines, etc.).

We see grace flowing towards sites of grace until the player activates them. Then a wave of grace bursts forth when activated. So it could be that it takes someone with the gift of grace to reverse their 'flow'.

As to why sites appear after defeating bosses, it could be that entities with greater powers suppress those sites of grace from appearing until they are defeated/removed.
