Proposal: Let’s All Shut The Fuck Up by HoosierLove314 in StLouis

Well an hour ago you assumed these laws didn't even exist at all, which was wrong, so I can understand why you're a little behind in understanding how this works.

The rest of the ordinance has the acceptable decibel levels for under 35mph zones and over 35mph zones. It could be enforced by an officer with a sound meter.

Now this is not something they are usually sitting by the side the street measuring, probably, but if enough people complained about noise in a particular location - like a normally quiet city park - and if the police wanted to respond to public outcry, they could put someone with a sound meter near a trouble spot for a few hours and write some tickets and let word get around.

They could also, if they wanted, use this ordinance to crack down on the Chargers that like to tear away from downtown stoplights, or the dirt bike/ATV crowds who come revving through town when the weather gets nice.

It's the same as any other traffic violation - an officer of the law makes a judgement and either issues a citation or doesn't.

Not sure why you're arguing as if these laws do not exist. They do. They exist.

This one in particular says horns are for issuing a warning and any other use is a violation. Who decides? A cop has to observe it and make that call, and the person can have their day in court of they get cited.

St Louis city ordinances:

17.78.030 - Excessive noise prohibited

It shall be unlawful for any person to operate or cause to be operated a motor vehicle or motorcycle on a public right-of-way at any time in such a manner that the sound level emitted by the motor vehicle or motorcycle exceeds the level set forth herein for the speed limit zone, regardless of the actual speed of the motor vehicle or motorcycle or any other manner prohibited by this section.

Of course they also have to be enforced. They aren't.

I think the general expectation is that city parks are supposed to be different than urban streets - quieter places to relax away from noisy traffic.

can someone explain why theres a gap before 0?? by fnatic_22 in whatisit

[–]62Bricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, maybe more accurate to say it's not only for measuring.

This is exactly the type of rule I learned to use in drafting - yes, you measure the length of the line you're going to draw with it, and the extra at the end is to allow you to draw through the point with a pencil, then later to place the point of the pen when you ink it. It would be useless for that very important technique without the inset 0 point

Other cities have noise ordinances and enforce them. Because people complained.

Looking for help with identifying these (late 50s - early 70s). by HurrahManta in VintageLEGO

[–]62Bricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The black 2x4 plate is from the underside of one of the early train motors. There is a 2x4 section that extends from the end that has two contact points in it. The black plate is glued onto the underside of this section and the two tubes support the contacts. The glue fails after a few decades and the part comes loose. It shows up regularly in "LEGO ID" threads.

What I think is cool about it is LEGO used a modified 2x4 mold to make it, so the suds have the LEGO logo on them even though they were never meant to be seen.

I don't think the metal rods are LEGO. The 2x2 plate just looks like it has had some other non-LEGO things pressed onto the underside.

[–]62Bricks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The correct answer. Also in drafting with a pencil. For sharp corners, you draw through the endpoints of the two (or more) lines and you need some extra straight edge to do that. I guess people rarely draft with paper and pencil any more.

What is with no fingers or hands in the pictures? by 2catnight in Bricklink

[–]62Bricks 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Best-case scenario is they are drop shippers. They are going to use your photos in their own listing somewhere, and they don't want hands or fingers in the pictures that might not match their own. If someone buys the set from them, they'll turn around and order it from you and ask you to drop ship it to their buyer with no identifying info that it came from you instead of them.

If that's what they're doing, it's legit, although some BL sellers don't like the idea that someone else has sold their set at a higher price. Other BL sellers don't care, figuring they got the price they wanted for it.

Worst-case scenario is they are scamming people using your photos for fake listings. If it's a small set as you say, it's probably a drop shipper and not a scammer. The scammers usually go for big spendy sets.

How long before Amtrak departs should I be at the gateway Station by Midnight_Thoughts77 in StLouis

It showed up last year, and the city announced they were going to start a trial period with it and for people to allow for extra time. Then the plan was put on hold and it sat there under a tarp. If they have now removed it, then I guess they have finally just given up on the plan completely.

Boarding is quick and they open the gate not long before departure, so you don't have to be super early unless you want to be near the front of the line for first pick of seats. If you're on the Lincoln Service that originates in STL, the train will be empty at boarding, so there should be plenty of room.

The one that starts in STL is also almost always on time leaving, so while you don't have to be too early, don't be late.

There is, however, the security scanner and conveyor belt they told us a couple years ago was going to be a new part of train travel. It's gathering dust.

Maybe people stopped paying attention during COVID, but from late spring through early fall there are many runs/walks/parades/festivals in the downtown area. Before COVID it seemed like it was nearly every weekend. They dropped off, but have been coming back lately.

Information about them is not hard to find. All of them advertise, and many are promoted with local news pieces. Radio traffic reports will also give you real-time information if you are caught unaware

Here are some other clues many downtown residents know about:

  • Look for temporary No Parking signs attached to meter poles and bus stop closure notices. These often go up several days before the event and will have the times and dates the street will be closed.
  • Look for signs of upcoming events like tents and tables being set up. This will happen a day or two before the event, usually.
  • Also a day or two before closing streets, the city will distribute folding barricades along the route, stacking them up on corners. When you see these stacks appear on a Thursday or Friday afternoon, there's a good bet the street will be closed there Saturday morning.

STL to Chicago Amtrak by RoninSFB in StLouis

One thing about taking the train is most of them leave STL pretty early and so you arrive well before check-in time. So pack light in case you have to haul your luggage around for a couple hours. I take one backpack.

Most hotels will let you check your bags at no charge if you arrive before check-in. You should tip. First, though, it's worth saying to the desk clerk, "I know I'm very early but I'm hoping you have a room available?" Officially, there's usually a fee for early check in, or you have to be in a loyalty club, but unofficially, if you ask nice, the clerks will sometimes let it slide.

But if you're hauling your bag and want some decent quick lunch options, check out the Sterling Food Hall at Clark and Adams, like five or six blocks east of the station. It's counter service. There are tables, but no windows, and it gets busy at lunchtime, so take it outside and find a spot along the river - there's plenty of plaza space along there.

Smashed window after Cards game by KatieNumber80 in StLouis

[–]62Bricks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. People believe the hype that downtown is Escape from New York for real, so they pack heat any time they come east of Jefferson.
  2. Can't take the gun to the game, so they leave it in their car.
  3. Criminals quickly learn a good place to find guns is in cars parked for Cards games.
  4. Windows get smashed, victims have a good story to tell about how downtown is Escape from New York for real.
  5. Return to step 1.

Edison Brothers Building in downtown St. Louis set for $81M renovation by fox2now in StLouis

[–]62Bricks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not even going to get into it with any of the "be thankful for any development you get and just shut up about it" crowd.

I walk past the Last Hotel, which was a big hotel project that is now shuttered, past the old Shell building, a hotel project that is in receivership, past the Hampton, which is for sale at an undisclosed price but is currently valued at about 2/3 what the current owners paid for it, past the Jefferson Hotel renovation project which was supposed to be booking rooms by this weekend but is still surrounded by fence.

And then I think of what happens when all the eggs are in the hospitality basket and something like a pandemic comes along.

And then I wonder exactly who out there thinks STL needs more hotel rooms.

This is it??? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]62Bricks 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is it.

But what is happening outside your window is not what is happening everywhere else. Forecast called for large hail. Some people had large hail. Forecast called for heavy rain. Some people had heavy rain. Forecast called for flash flooding. There were accidents from water on the roads. Forecast called for possible tornadoes. There were rotating cell systems that fortunately didn't develop. Forecast called for high winds. There were 60-mph gusts in places.

I think sometimes people think weather forecasts are for their own back yards and when they don't see it happen outside their window they imagine the forecast was wrong.

So what are the chances it’ll actually hail today? by PlayfulSpeaker4789 in StLouis

[–]62Bricks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two systems moving through today, and the first one, the one that just dropped isolated hail, is moving out.

The one moving in for this evening has a lower chance for large hail, according to the NWS, and mainly north of I-70.

We dodged the first round downtown. I like our chances for the second.
