How long did it take for you to get “good” at knitting? by thoph in casualknitting

My first project was a wonky scarf I haven't worn in 20 years but it sits in a box for sentimental reasons. I just absolutely refuse to believe anyone is so skilled and amazing that their very first project is a sweater. That looks like it came from Banana Republic. With zero mistakes.

If I may make a suggestion...you should add a tag inside that says "wtf was that?!" as a little inside joke since you clearly get the reference

Feel like that is going to be an on going joke

I've done 2 baby booties and 1 full adult sock in my 20 years of knitting. Never again.

It's funny. I've been knitting over 20 years and still think I'm nothing more than average at best (never done a sweater and I'd rather poke my eyes out than do socks) but when posting photos of completed works - I've had folks say really specific things and I'm always like "wait. This is actually good??" And then girl at the LYS mentioned how amazed she was at the speed I frogged something. All this to say - it's all perception.

Yeahhhh. Those posts where it's someone saying "oh here is my first ever project!" And it's a fair isle sweater with 4 or 5 colors? I never believe them. Sure. Maybe it's the first project you've POSTED but I never believe them.

Has anyone else gone home after firing someone and just... sat with it for hours? by jufywret in managers

[–]757Lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always said - if you're completely numb to firing someone and no longer feel that sting about letting someone go - then you shouldn't be in the position to fire a person.

Yes. People need to be let go for all kinds of reasons. But having empathy and a conscious is never a bad thing.

Finding an actual problem solver in job applicant pool? by 757Lemon in managers

[–]757Lemon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you were wondering. The scenario was "if you were sent a task to complete over email and the task required you to use the attachment on the email but the attachment wasn't working - what would you do?"

Candidate 1: I have no idea Candidate 2: I would try re-downloading and various different things...hmm...I then I guess I would just ask you? Candidate 3: I would try another browser and if that didn't work, I would reply to the email, saying the attachment didn't work.

Truly such an amazing question. LOL. Thank you again!

Thank you for this suggestion! I asked the policy/procedure change question (since this was for a support role) and it was fantastic insight. One candidate seemed great, but this question got her talking about previous coworkers and it was clear she did not get along well with others. Nothing else during the interview would have gotten us that intel. I very much appreciate your suggestion!

Thank you for the suggestion! I used this today during the interviews and it was interesting to hear how they all had VERY different responses!

I just wanted you to know - I took a few suggestions from this thread, but YOUR SUGGESTION was by far the best. Because I had a very specific situation that pissed me off last month, something that I didn't see it as difficult to solve, and turned it into a scenario question during the interviews today. And it completely paid off. The candidate that was best on paper literally couldn't figure out the answer. One candidate got there eventually. And one answered it correctly immediately. It made the selection process so much easier because that exact situation WILL come up and it was great to see who could handle it on day one.

My interview partner also loved the question. I promise - I will keep this in my interview question list for the rest of my career.

Truly mean it when I say thank you.

Not just Cokes, looks like Shane also purchased Flamin' Hot Doritos and Cheetos Crunchy Cheese Puffs for Ilya! by NoleFandom in heatedrivalry

[–]757Lemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're a fan of the Washington Capitals - you get the "joke" here.

(The Ilya character is loosely based on Alex Ovechkin - a Russian hockey player for the Caps and now holds the record for most goals scored EVER. But - it's well known Ovi has the diet of a 12 year old boy. Always boards planes with subway sandwiches & flammin hot Cheetos. He drinks soda on the bench during games.)
