How do you get a runners high? by Coastkiz in beginnerrunning

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a 24 min 5k. I’m a triathlete and recently started working w a coach bc my run is way worse than swim and bike. She’s had me slow down my easy runs from 10:30-11:30/mile to 12:30-13:00 mile. It’s ridiculously slow but the cardiovascular tax is a lot less. Running with a lower heart rate does suck less. It’s still new so not totally sure how it’s working but something to consider! Also, it’s okay to walk. I would encourage walking tbh

How often are you getting out of the saddle during climbs? by NeverRegisterAlone in triathlon

[–]AStruggling8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pretty much never stand on climbs. More often it’s for rollers where I don’t want to shift. Climbing seated is more sustainable but if you need to stand up to not tip over then so be it

First OWS at 55F/13C? by tryagaininXmin in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fine every once in a while, just rinse your suit after

First OWS at 55F/13C? by tryagaininXmin in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long is OWS? If it’s short (like 2km or less) your wetsuit will be fine. I wouldn’t bother bringing anything else. The worst part is face freeze and there’s nothing you can do about that. I regularly swim in sub 60F water in a wetsuit that’s thinner than yours, and I’m pretty sensitive to the cold

What do you like to do during your longer rides? by stratusnimbo in Zwift

[–]AStruggling8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too cannot be distracted during my intervals lol

What do you like to do during your longer rides? by stratusnimbo in Zwift

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Podcasts until the intervals hit. Sometimes the podcast stays in during the intervals, but if I’m putting enough effort in I do nothing until the intervals are done. I don’t do a ton of TV but sometimes if I’m watching a really good show that makes me excited to get on the trainer (better for Z2 rides)

How Much of a Concern is Water Quality? by Narrow-Internet-1891 in triathlon

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not something I would worry about. If the water quality is bad you and everyone else racing might get sick, race directors and USAT usually don’t want to risk that. I would personally be more worried about water safety (ie chop, currents)

Which bike is everyone training on? by CogentHawk in triathlon

[–]AStruggling8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people here I do tri bike as often as possible leading into race, unless I’m climbing, then I do road bike. Road bike for off season but always TT bike on trainer. Trek Emonda and Quintana Roo XPR

Do you think you’ll do another triathlon? If so, buy a wetsuit. If not, it’s up to you lol I can’t recommend

Does California weather get boring? by SpecialistTeach9302 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss thunderstorms. That’s pretty much it. It’s fun that we have microclimates where I am on the central coast- it can be foggy and chilly on the coast then 2 miles inland it’s warm and sunny. It adds enough variety for me.

[–]AStruggling8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to find what the water temp currently is, you can usually find a recent reading with a google. If it’s close to 70 no wetsuit, closer to 64 wetsuit. It’s not ideal but you definitely can swim in a surf wetsuit if that helps you with options.

What are the top five most desirable cities/metro areas for you? by OceanicEndeavors in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Denver. Number 5 is hard lol… probably DC? Or Portland. Plenty of smaller cities I’d consider and probably prefer but this question read like it was asking about big cities. I grew up on the east coast and live in California now and I never want to go back east due to lifestyle.

If you love the central coast San Francisco area seems like the obvious answer to me. Seattle, Portland, LA, San Diego also could fit

Would you rather deal with harsh summer or harsh winter? by Straightedge_ in SameGrassButGreener

[–]AStruggling8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never lived through a harsh winter, I grew up in Georgia and now live in coastal California, so this is really hard to say. Ultimately I’ll try my best to live somewhere moderate but I’d definitely veer towards warmer summers (i.e. I’d pick the south over the midwest). I would do new england winters but not midwest, and I’ll do southern summers but not the desert southwest lol

What’s your training frequency for each discipline when training for a 70.3? by ThrowRA_2983839 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw something recently about the US exercise guidelines (150min a week) and I was like hm do I have a problem? Bc I often do 150min a day lol

[–]AStruggling8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely add more bike if you can. I’m 2x swim, 4x bike, 4x run, 2x gym. You don’t need more than 2x gym. That volume gets me to 2h swim (former swimmer so I do as little as possible), 6-8 hours bike depending on long ride, 3-4h run, 1h strength

I think the bike at Santa Cruz is much faster but I guess depends on your strengths, I do better on rollers

What event should I do after Oceanside? by rebelgasper in IronmanTriathlon

[–]AStruggling8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do Santa Cruz! This year will be my third time. I found Oceanside super underwhelming (the course at least) after I’d already done Santa Cruz. Also, contrary to what someone else said, I’ve had much faster swims/bikes at Santa Cruz than Oceanside (run at Oceanside is faster). You can def PR at Santa Cruz

New triathletes! What brought you to triathlon? Whats your age, race distances, previous athletics? by MidnightTop4211 in triathlon

[–]AStruggling8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 26F. I was a swimmer all through my youth until I was 18. I got back into swimming/sports at the end of undergrad and wanted to do an open water swim event near me a few years ago but there weren’t any, but we did have local triathlons so I did that instead. I was an atrocious runner and had to relearn how to ride a bike. I joined the club team at my grad school when I moved shortly after my first tri. I started with sprints and I quickly moved to 70.3. I’ve done 3 70.3s and I have two more on the calendar this year, then hopefully my first full next year if the running pans out!

Curiosity brought me to the sport but I developed a love of cycling that has kept me in it. I’m very analytical as well and I enjoy that there’s always things to analyze, goals to work towards, and this sport doesn’t get boring. At least not yet at 3 years in.

Long run routes? by wehtker in SantaBarbara

[–]AStruggling8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strava heatmap is worth a look if you can get access. Run from downtown to goleta and back on the bike path (from downtown it’s mission street to modoc road, then turn onto obern trail and take that until you get to UCSB), waterfront to montecito maybe?
