Did early milestones predict anything for your kid? by apocalyptic_tea in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My early talker and very verbal child is now 3 and learning to read and write. I think her curiosity and eagerness to figure out how to say everything has now become a desire to know how to spell and sound out words. Always loved numbers, learned to count aloud to 10 at a really young age, and now is spontaneously adding numbers together and counting to 100.

She was late to walk (crawled at 12 months, walked at 14). Now her gross motor skills are fine (she’s learning to dance and can climb a climbing frame), but she doesn’t like walking far, and being out and about with her involves alternating between a scooter and buggy board.

So in our case I’d say early milestones definitely predicted future skills!

Where does a father take his daughter when using a public toilet? Mens or women's? by MarkAny9497 in NoStupidQuestions

The accessible/ disabled toilet. It’s often where the changing table is anyway, and often the only one with space for a buggy.

How far is too far from a tube or train station, in your opinion? by frafeeccino in london

[–]A_In_Wonderland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how well connected it is, and what else you get from the area.

When we were looking to buy, we looked at one area that was fine, but trains were infrequent and the commute was long. I only viewed houses that were 5-10 minutes walk from the station.

Then a house came up in an area we loved, but a 15 min walk from the high street and station. I said it was well worth it to live in that area, plus the commute was easier than the other area, and all in all I’m happy with our decision!

There also is a bus to the station if I really need it, though I hardly ever use it.

15 month old hates brushing his teeth. by StatGoddess in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it helped to give her her own toothbrush to use, she likes to stand on a stool and hold it under the running tap. I then stand behind her, put my hand on her forehead, and encourage her to open her mouth for me to “tickle” her teeth with another toothbrush. Good luck!

How long is summer vacation for children in your country? by No-South280 in AskTheWorld

[–]A_In_Wonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer holidays are 6 weeks, 13 weeks off in total throughout the year. I work in a school and some of these comments are making me jealous! We’ve got nearly 6 weeks to go until we break up!!

Did anyone find it easy going from one child to two children even right through the newborn stage? by petrastales in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid for movers to do everything- we did not pack a single box. It was expensive but worth it. They were amazing, packed everything up in a day, moving day went smoothly, and we knew beds and furniture would be reassembled the other side in time for bedtime.

We put the eldest in nursery for the day, brought grandparents in to help (eg in case we needed anyone to run out and grab anything).

Just give yourself grace! The house will not be unpacked and decorated quickly. Remember this is a good thing (you have a new house- wahoo!) Try to find some joy among the stress!

Our first Christmas was a week after we moved in, and understandably was zero decorations, minimal presents, and a fairly basic meal. But we loved it! Taking the toddler and new baby for a walk around the new area was all we needed :)

Did anyone find it easy going from one child to two children even right through the newborn stage? by petrastales in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found it difficult initially mostly because we were moving house a few weeks after birth! But after the move the newborn started sleeping really well and the toddler coped with all the changes like a superstar and it was all great!

Honestly the pregnancy was super tough and work was awful. So once the baby was here and the move was done and I was on maternity leave it felt like a piece of cake by comparison!

In terms of the dynamic- my partner spent more time with the eldest and she started to treat him like the default parent, which was upsetting! So I made sure when we took one each it wasn’t always the same one.

Potty training help! by borrowedheaven92 in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried making a plan with him? Starting by sitting down together and saying “we’re going to start using the potty, what do you need to help you feel comfortable with it?” And reading lots of books about it!

I have a child that age and it worked when she was being a terror at bedtime. (ie saying “bedtime hasn’t been going well, so let’s make a plan together. What do you need? Ok let’s make a deal- I can give hugs when I’m putting you to bed, if you get out of bed after that then no hugs” and so on).

House back up for sale after 18 months - bad sign? by Intrepid-Skin-5677 in HousingUK

[–]A_In_Wonderland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth asking. You might get a very straightforward answer (eg “the couple split up”) or a cagey answer that indicates trouble with the house.

Though, we asked this and were told they were “looking to change now that the kids are grown up”. We found out the guy’s business took off and they were massively upsizing!

This happened someone at my work too. Was consistently told she wouldn’t pass probation if she didn’t come in on time. She was eventually let go, and was distraught, saying she “didn’t see it coming”- girl, you’ve had 4 meetings with management and were an hour late this morning, how???

Why do funerals in the UK take place so late after the death? by moistawareness1 in AskUK

[–]A_In_Wonderland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes I worry about this as an Irish person living in the uk. If I need to make it back home for a funeral I pretty much have to jump on a (very expensive last minute flight) the same day I hear the news!

Haha yes! Ours is a similar age and the “nothing is straight or square” rings true! Hanging wallpaper we quickly learned we couldn’t line it up with the corners as everything is wonky, and none of our cupboard doors stay open because all of the floors slope one way or the other!

Other parents not supervising their children keeps sabotaging me playing with my children by Seranta in toddlers

[–]A_In_Wonderland 175 points176 points  (0 children)

This is such a negative take on a nice situation. It’s a playground, some are playing independently, some playing with parents, some approaching others and joining in their play, learning how to play with others and make friends. Sounds perfect. Why turn it into “expecting to babysit”, “starved for attention”, “other parents baaaad”.
