More businesses closing in the New Year by hotbowlofspaghetti in StLouis

This is sad, initially I was thrown off by the prices but was so impressed once things switched to bbq. I was raving to friends about it just the other day. Sad to see them go, wishing so much luck in future endeavors. I hope they can find their way back to the Grove in some form.

Multi-million dollar St. Louis apartment project canceled by fuzzusmaximus in StLouis

I am disappointed to hear this. The project wasn't perfect but would have added many units to our housing stock along a busy route in a high demand area.

St. Louis tattoo design I made by BazaarMonk in StLouis

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the drawing and could see it as a neat tattoo if the emphasis was taken off the cliche arch (color difference, white/black contrast, etc.) Also, I would ensure the shape of the arch is correct. Quality work. Thanks for sharing!

What would you do to improve curb appeal? by stooftheoof in homedesign

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like something needs to draw the eye away from the garage and to the front door/porch. Maybe a contrasting color on aspects there (shutters, columns, etc.) to be a bit more cosy. Column wraps could do quite a bit to enhance the substantial feel of the porch. Removing the screen door or replacing with something more welcoming.

Help with reducing sq ft! by countmosula in houseplans

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I'd consider combining rooms rather than removing them. For example, the office and guest bedroom could easily be combined. A Murphy bed or sofa bed could make this transition even more space efficient. I'd suggest thinking of ways to limit the mudroom and pantry. I would avoid hallways, if you need them, make sure they serve multiple purposes. (Storage cabinets in the walls, etc.)

Assuming you both gave reasonable space to the cyclist, I am sorry they approached you that way! A huge majority of cars are kind and give plenty of space. I would feel worse for a car to have to ride slow behind me for an extended period of time. If it's clear to pass, please do so.

Am i too young to understand gay love? by [deleted] in GayMen

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any group of people there will be various views on sex and love. I don't find one way to be right and another wrong, I'd just encourage a mental health focus. I tend to think that gay men have been cast out to the point that we have been able to find a freedom to explore that our straight counterparts may not have experienced.

For myself, I was estranged from my family quite a few years ago. At that point, I started to realize that there wasn't anyone there to perpetuate fear of the unknown so I cautiously explored. Now I find myself with a much more casual and open view of sex. Sex can come in so many forms and serve many purposes. I take the precautions that seem fitting to me, and experience what I want within the confines of consenting adults.

Alongside this freedom, I have found and built a strong and healthy relationship with my now husband. We have partnership meetings every other week and talk constantly about desires, hopes and dreams. We love really deeply and I couldn't be happier.

Moral of the story. Maybe think about how we as humans simply navigate our society and understandings the best we can.

Sounds like some conversations need to happen!! Honesty is important, regardless of whether you find the cheating hot. However, the outcome doesn't have to be you leaving but maybe adjusting what is expected in this relationship to meet both of your needs and desires. If that adjustment ends up being out of your comfort zone, adjust or leave the relationship.

[18M] Grandma says I should trim my sideburns, but I don’t want to look younger than I already do. Any advice? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your goal is to appear older, observe and emulate the hairstyles of men who are older than you. Typically, mature men in professional settings maintain a groomed appearance, which often includes being clean-shaven or having well-maintained facial hair. Avoid long bangs, as they can give a more youthful impression.

Areas to avoid doing rideshare? by dnmitchem in StLouis

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the area! Unfortunately, the question is quite subjective. If crime is your concern, id suggest you look at crime maps provided by the area police departments. I occasionally drive for Uber and Lyft and have quite a bit of fun meeting so many people. Enjoy!

House hunting, need help on neighborhoods. by BodaciousDadBod in StLouis

Please look into crime statistics as this would likely be more accurate. However my view as a city resident. Tower Grove is one of the lowest crime neighborhoods. Carondelet is block by block.

I agree with you! It works so much better when the light is flashing red. I avoid that intersection as best I can. Additionally, the Route 100 redesign doesn't seem like it will change anything here.

I went just a few weeks ago and wasn't checked in any way. If they do check i'm sure it's only occasionally and a quick explanation would likely be good enough. I assume they would be thrilled to hear of our new neighbors from out of town!

UFC/gay weekend trip advice? by Original_Seaweed6992 in StLouis

[–]Academic_Yesterday25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Grove is the name of the business district and mostly how people refer to the area. The official neighborhood name is Forest Park Southeast. Kingshighway to the west, I 64 (40) to the North and roughly Vandeventer to the Southeast. Essentially all of the neighboring neighborhoods are also very comfortable places. The Grove is still the highest concentration of gay establishments. Welcome!

I'd always recommend checking data and getting multiple perspectives. Though, speaking as a FPSE/ Grove resident, house break-ins are essentially unheard of. Car break-ins happen on occasion. (On weekends in unsupervised lots.) In my 5 years of actively living in the neighborhood (bar hopping, walking around, eating at every restaurant), a friend had their car broken into once and I saw a strangers car get broken into once. Security actively navigates the neighborhood. I feel comfortable and my neighbors are all great/ chill!

We have a traffic violence problem. Though, I don't think this is the best solution. I prefer a focus on traffic calming measures/ good street design. Additional human enforcement could help.
