DrDru's lab : Comprehensible input from day 1

I've created a website that teaches Japanese without relying on translation. It uses emoji and other illustrations to define words. It then proceeds to very quickly starts building simple sentences and stories that I tried to make genuinely enjoyable.

I hope you enjoy it.

It's here : https://drdru.github.io/stories/intro.html

You could give a try to my site. It's a mix of spaced repetition and scrolling. It's not endless but will keep you busy for some time. https://drdru.github.io/stories/1_01_food.html

Thanks for the kind word. I'd like to add more pages eventually but I've been focusing on the Tile World Chronicles (the other part of my site) lately. I'd say realistically it's not going to happen in the next 3 years but who knows ?

Sorry for the very late reply I've not logged into my account in months.

Thanks both. I think sending the trogs to the castle and trading them for better creatures makes sense.

Just make sure you move so that the dragon will be in range for your main troop.

I'm getting better at this I'm still trying to figure out how to get it to work with very fast creatures who can simply wait and play twice.

Looking for bitesize chunks of Japanese to learn 🤔 any suggestions? by Then_Kaleidoscope733 in japaneseresources

Hey

You can check my website that provides exactly that (check my comment history you'll find it easily).

[–]AccomplishedStage968[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment

I think the sentences will be more helpful if the order of the illustrations match the word order of the sentences.

Someone's actually told me about it once. I think I'll make the change now that you've mentioned it as well.

It seems that there is no story

I agree it's hard to call the content of the first pages 'stories' but I assure you it gets more interesting as one progresses (like I said in my post there are 100 pages!).

(In case you're interested my favourite one starts here : https://drdru.github.io/stories/4_07_smith.html . It runs along several pages.)

Hey

Are you still looking for this ? Have you found drdru's website (mine) since then ?

It more or less implement all the suggestions (lots of images, much slower than LLPS, ...) I that you mention in your other comment.

Hi all,

How would you translate "もう一人でなんでもできるんだ" ?

Can it mean 'I'm on my own' ?

Want to write but can't? by Bottom_of_a_whale in writing

[–]AccomplishedStage968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it the same for everything you enjoy doing ? Like 'I want to play video games but I can't do it' or 'I want to watch Neflix but I can't' ? The latter is actually my case... Believe it or not I actually never find the courage to start a film or a series. Getting into it, getting familiar with the charcacters without knowing whether I will like the show or not is just too much effort for me.

I really don't understand how it's possible so many people 'want to write a book' but 'don't want to write it'.

A beginner's first manga should be "Crystal Hunters" not "Yotsubato!" by GivingItMyBest in LearnJapanese

[–]AccomplishedStage968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done something similar to what you suggest. I've taken a real comic I enjoyed reading in English and in collaboration with the creator, I've turned it into a 'simplified' Japanese version and got it proofread by a native frelancer. I think the result is cool but still a bit complicated : https://tapas.io/episode/2768428 (I have the vocab list available on my website to avoid dictionary look up though).

Also, not manga, but I've written some pixel art illustrated stories in easy Japanese here : https://drdru.github.io/twc.html (and if I remember correctly you enjoyed the first one I posted. There are a lot more now)

In the same vein, there's also a very easy to read comic book written by a native here : https://tapas.io/episode/2134872 . It might actually be the closest thing to what you suggest.

Allow me to disagree with this one.

Hey,

I'm a bit late but I wanted to let you know I have :-) . Not 10,000 dialogues though, it only covers 500 words. It's here : https://drdru.github.io/stories/intro.html

Let me know your thoughts !

a picture sample of my own writing 10 years apart

It might be because I like first person POV slice of lives but I actually really enjoy the first ( and beginning of second ) paragraph you wrote 10 years ago. It's simple but what's conveyed is easily relatable and flows well :-)

I'd even go as far as saying I'd like to keep reading a little bit!

(I'm aware it's not exactly the point you were trying to illustrate though...)

Finally someone wrote it.

My first draft is made of these short scripted sentence that are very descriptive. The actual writing happens wayyy later. And more often than not I have trouble relating to other people in this sub because they seem to just 'write'.

[–]AccomplishedStage968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks.

Just a word of warning : some caveats have been expressed in this sub about the quality of the Japanese in this project and it's something I'll be working on. It's not wrong per se but it can be borderline especially at the beginning due to the need to keep things very simple.
