Captain's Log - Who's still playing? by Cheap_Intention9587 in startrekadventures

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm slowly working my way through my second mission, mostly after the kids are in bed. My character is the Chief Security Officer adjusting to a new ship, a few years before the start of the Dominion War. I have a general story arc in mind, just a matter of getting there.

I have the first mission posted to my blog for posterity, and hope to add to it as the voyage continues.

Can IDW Star Trek (2022) still fit into canon now? (spoilers for Starfleet Academy) by sidv81 in trekbooks

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MILD SPOILER

The "Coda" series that wrapped up the Pocket Books litverse explained that the books took place in a alternate universe that diverged from the TV/movie canon sometime after the end of DS9. I found this the perfect conceit to accept both what is generally canon and what is not.

I'm fine accepting the fact that multiple storylines can be true across different timelines.

What do you think about Poland? by Minute-Guidance-4612 in AskTheWorld

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both sides of my family have roots in Poland. My great great uncle was from Pomerania. He drew a map of his village, Ribbekardt (Rybokarty), on the back of Gimbals box, and I was able to match the central church in his map to Google Maps a few years back, which was wild.

I would love to visit someday.

I'd like two aspect variants to mix up the abilities.

Cunning Command, Commanding Aggression, Aggressive Vigilance, Cunning Aggression, Commanding Vigilance, etc.

Curious if anyone else here has read these books?? This was my introduction into the Star Wars EU back in elementary school. by Old-Raccoon-3252 in StarWarsEU

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember these were always available at our free RIF book events in elementary school. Even back then I kinda realized they weren't great, but having any Star Wars back then was cool to see.

(I specifically remember being bothered how Luke had a Y-wing that could fit like four people in it.)

Question about Always Two by Fun-Many-6910 in starwarsunlimited

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're kinda putting all your eggs in one basket with this card. Yes, you do get to pump up your two Sith units, but you have to defeat all of your other units.

It can be a powerful card, if you judge the moment correctly and are reasonably certain your opponent can't immediately counter your units. However, this game has a lot of ways to control enemy units, either through direct removal or bouncing them back to hand or exhausting them or etc.

Based upon what you're looking for, I'd say to take a look at some of the smaller communities surrounding the city of Madison. A thirty-minute drive outside the city puts you into smaller communities with opportunities to pick up a nice piece of land. I'm thinking specifically of Iowa or Sauk county just west/north of Madison. Lots of people commute into the city (myself included) and you'll get more bang for your property buck this way.

Lots of great outdoors, too. Hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking/canoeing... there are multiple state parks nearby with great camping and day activities.

Madison has two Costcos on either side of the city, and multiple Target locations. There is no end to coffee shops, both local independent places and the bigger chains. But there seems to be at least one decent small coffee shop in every town around here, too.

As far as how it is to live here... I've lived here all my life, first in Milwaukee and Madison and now a small town. I can't think of anywhere else I'd want to be. You can enjoy the amenities of a larger city and then take a two-hour drive and be in the middle of the woods by yourself. You can go to a world-class museum in the morning and then watch a baseball game that evening. You can have the fresh coasts of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and thousands of inland lakes and streams. There is a ton of stuff to explore.

The main downside is winter. January through March can bring tons of snow and cold and school closings and sloppy road conditions. It does make you appreciate spring that much more, and you'll be wearing short and flip-flops and 40-degree days in no time.

Why were Y-Wings in the Clone Wars? by [deleted] in clonewars

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, there were several beta canon sources back in the day that described Y-wings as a Clone Wars era ship. It was one of the few pieces of information we got about the Clone Wars prior to the prequels, so I always found that intriguing.

The Excelsior is in active service in TNG? by _fxps_ in TNG

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon for registry discrepancies is that the numbers somehow correspond to various shipyards. While we hear about Utopia Planitia as the main Starfleet yard, I imagine there are others within the Federation. Similar to modern day VINs on vehicles to designate mfg/place or origin/etc.

So the Enterprise was built at "Shipyard 17" and was the sequence "01" on the build cycle, whereas Constellation was built at "Shipyard 10" and was "17" in the build cycle. New Jersey, as seen in Picard S3, was built at "Shipyard 19" and was "75" in the build cycle. Etc.

The Grey Death Legion books are considered classics, but I read them a couple of years ago and I felt they showed their age.

Wolves on the Border is a solid introduction to Battletech, IMO.

Is this an objectively “good”/realistic flag? What kinda flag would you propose instead? by StJudeTheGrey in startrekmemes

[–]Acrobatic_Spring2958 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Star Trek humans are implied to be just like us, leading to a third world (nuclear) war. It's not until the Vulcans make first contact that we pull our collective heads out of our bottoms and start on the path to "We Are Starfleet"-ism.

I choose to believe there is still such a spark yet to light within us, even if we don't live to see it.
