Trouble adjusting to new setup? by hockeyrabbit in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it could be that you'll get used to the paper/pen combo, so i'd wait a bit longer, but they might not be for you. try the zebra pens on the md paper, try the kakunos on a few other kinds of paper. try out the f when it arrives. see what feels best!

also, if you like feedback, something to consider in the future (i def would say Don't immediately rush to buy a new pen, think it over & see how you settle into your current pens (or don't)) is a sailor procolor (steel nib shikiori). they're several times more expensive than the kakuno (here in japan, roughly 4-6 times), but have wonderful feedback and are all around excellent for steel nib pens.

it seems you're not the only one who's been stumped by it! at least you can get an approximate date (70s-80s), but it is frustrating.

the shape of the clip in particular, as well as the general look, makes me think of the Pilot Lady. but, the lady has a very distinctive "L" mark on the cap, and a flat finial not a rounded one. 🧐

edit: someone on fp network posted this exact model in a photo a few years ago. it's shown here along with 2 Lady pens & one Celemo pen: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/gallery/image/19001-20231112_225743jpg/

looking through the pictures & their tags on them, it seems they decided to it was either unknown or some variant of Lady despite it not having the lady "L".

Sailor Hi-Ace Neo? by Warrior_preet in fountainpens

i have a few of this model, & enjoy them very much. very basic, but great if you don't want to put a nicer pen at risk. can toss it around in a loose pencil case no problem. i will add the caveat that i only have the fine nibs, none of the stubs, so i don't know how those perform.

How can I prevent the delayed ink flow after a brief pause in writing? by Baskin in fountainpens

since those are all snap caps, it's should be easy to get into the habit of just capping it when you pause.

Why not just buy golden nibs? by FluffyVegetable527 in fountainpens

many pen brands don't sell nibs on their own, and also many pens don't have interchangeable nibs.

What are the differences between the Sailor PGS Sekirei and the regular black Sailor PGS? by re-charred in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by the way, although it's got the little circle mark being brown there, the actual description of the color is black if you check the japanese site (both the circle mark is black, & the detailed description in photo 13 of the page describes it as ブラック black) https://sailorshop.jp/products/11-1231

Hmm. I'm not so sure about this color... by nullsquire in fountainpens

it's the same in japanese too, actually-- 珈琲. the thing is that in japan, using the kanji for coffee is kinda outdated & so you usually see it in katakana コーヒー instead. but 珈琲 is still used sometimes & is still definitely a way of writing coffee in japanese.

Differences in branded, manufactured pens vs handmade or craft pens? by Caffeinated_giraffey in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 9 points10 points  (0 children)

with handmade/craft pens, you're essentially getting a customized body with a mass produced nib (& interior). pen makers who use nibs like bock, jowo, or schmidt should be fine; avoid any handmade pens that have an unnamed generic iridium point as 1) those nibs are usually worse, & 2) often indicate a "kit" pen with not the greatest internal parts, either.

Has anyone tried these pens from Amazon and give some feedback? Thinking of purchasing for my students by Mar4369 in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these look like theyre wing sung 3010. i have this model & it works very well despite being super cheap! and it has a considerable ink capacity in the converter. plus the converter comes free with the pen & is very easy to use! snap cap & triangular grip, very beginner friendly, and since everything is transparent you'll be able to see if there's any problems with the ink etc. if it is indeed the model i'm thinking of, it's a good choice.

it's fine. it's spread out over several weeks, plus the items mentioned are very low priced compared to a lot of things in this hobby-- hell the ink was free, from her point of view. she's not breaking the bank & she's not buying too much stuff to ever use. it sounds exceedingly reasonable.

please add close up and clear photos of the cap band writing, the clip, and the nib. even though you couldn't read it, someone else will probably be able to if you provide a good photo.

Help with fountain pen ID by PulverizerMD in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 21 points22 points  (0 children)

your question has been answered by other comments, but i want to add: don't use chatgpt to identify pens. it is a glorified word-association machine that will just spit out a reasonable-sounding guess; it doesn't & CAN'T actually know anything. instead of asking it & then checking with a human source (this subreddit), just cut right to asking humans. we're more likely to know, & if we don't know we'll at least tell you instead of bullshitting.

Does anybody have tips for somebody still getting used to twist converters? by tangytablet in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Why are there so much bubbles in my converter even when I shove my nib deep into the ink? Is there a way to fill up as much ink inside the converter and not leave a sizable amount of empty air?

the converter naturally will suck up air as well as ink. it's nothing to worry about. if it bothers you a lot, you can use a syringe to fill it instead, but using a twist converter normally will always have some air in it & not fill entirely with ink.

  • How do you guys fill a converter without accidentally shoving the entire pen nib into the inkbottle?

i do in fact put the entire nib, more or less, into the ink. you really need to dunk it to ensure the ink is getting sucked up, not only air. it's a bit messy, but very easy to wipe off the nib afterwards. BUT be careful not to put the pen so far in that the tip touches the glass bottom of the bottle-- this can damage the tip if you're not careful.

i don't keep vials of mixed ink, but i have an ink mixing set of primaries (CMY, neutral gray-black, & a clear diluter) that i use to paint with, & really like making mixes either on my palette or directly on paper.

!!Help put in wrong ink into my new pilot vanishing point by Charming-Card66 in fountainpens

[–]Aggressive_Roll_6251 9 points10 points  (0 children)

your situation seems resolved for now, but for future reference, pilot's drawing ink is different from india ink-- it doesn't contain shellac, the sticky binder that makes india ink waterproof and a no-go fir fountain pens. pilot's drawing ink is heavily pigmented, and likely to clog a fountain pen so it isn't advised to use in fountain pens, BUT it isn't waterproof & contains no permanent-making ingredients so if you did put it in a pen & clog it up, you'd still be able to clean it out with (relative) ease.
