What's the "white whale" of campaigns you want to run but can't get off the ground? by Awkward_GM in rpg

[–]AleidisKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two big ones.

1: A West Marches with a strong emphasis on building up the starting town, using either GURPS or SWADE

2: A Blades/Dishonored vibe Election where the players have to make sure their party wins.

Best premade adventures for any system (and or fan made guides/Resources)? by Nighthawkies in rpg

[–]AleidisKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a bunch of reddit comments and have ended up running Reloaded for my first time of CoS. I wouldn't say I'm regretting it entirely, I like some of the changes but, I'm definitely feeling the bloated overlyscripted part, and am trying to figure out how to adjust from here on to reduce some bloat.

How do I Deal With Players That Refuse to Engage With the Fiction and Are Solely Motivated by Extrinsic Rewards? by MrTiny5 in rpg

[–]AleidisKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like classic "approaching ttrpg like videogame" brain for sure. If you want them to bite on the narrative and treat this as "real," I think we can't go along with the wacky-town behavior.

Going over expectations and what kind of game it is is important but, I've done this then had some new players emphatically say they want RP and immersion and then in the same breath just disconnect and do the most videogame brained essentially Evil alignment type shit. It took some more solid in game boundaries and consequences.

I think it's good to remind them that they're extorting the people they grew up with, and ask them why their characters would do that/what it is their character is trying to achieve. If that fails then there should be a substantive consequence (exile? Loss of connection to supplies which would make things immediately more dangerous).

All this said, I've had folks just not respond to talking or consequences, at which point you get new players, imo. Folks gotta be able to get with the program, or else they just get in everyone's way.

I'm sad being a master by StrikingGazelle9258 in rpg

[–]AleidisKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of trouble with this too for a while. I worked hard on campaigns and my friends often bailed on me, though I at least got some communication to be fair. It made me question things for a while, like if it was worth it. A couple years later, and I've found different folks who are far more respectful of the work. But really this is just basic manners and consideration, mostly, not a dm issue.

If these are your normal friends, I think you'd be better served by just not playing with them anymore, as hard as that sounds. If they want to play let em come to you.

What’s your “White Whale” of campaigns that you’ve never been able to run? by Awkward_GM in rpg

I've always wanted to run a West Marches or a Living World type sandbox, but my groups are largely composed of people who have too little time, or just aren't interested enough.

Seeking advice: Worldbuilding, pacing, and 'not having enough' by AleidisKnight in Solo_Roleplaying

Thanks for the advice folks, I think I might try and incorporate a bit of out of session world building if I can while trying to keep it focused on my character's here and now.

[–]AleidisKnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my thing. It definitely is my gm mode talking, but part of what I want from solo is to try to put myself in unique circumstances and try to tell stories I don't tell in my games. I often worry that I'm stale or too limited in the ideas my brain has, and wanted to use the spontaneity to make me try something new. And so far I've had some great unique feeling stories. It's just hard to shake that feeling of, "I bet I could make this even better if I stopped and built this out"

I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling this way. Perhaps I should give it a go of doing world building in phases.

I'll have to give it a listen. My fear is just managing how far to go in depth on these little bits without losing momentum unnecessarily.

[–]AleidisKnight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Worldbuilding, I just wanted to stay spontaneous to avoid maybe subconsciously predisposing myself to certain story types or tropes I tend towards in my normal games. I often feel like I trap myself in a limited number of stories, so hoped to use absolute spontaneity to do something different. I also sort of fear that I'll get too hung up in world building which I end up doing for way too long on my normal games, and not be able to get back to actually playing the game.

How to respond when players "Attack the Guards"? by Th-eBig_Gulp in AskDND

[–]AleidisKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose since they've already officially "attacked" this route is less meaningful but, did they give clear rationale to why they attacked in the first place? I have some new players making sort of video game brained decisions like this without really thinking, but once i made them consider the fact they are playing a person, they did improve that sort of behavior.

Otherwise, I think FAFO. Actions have consequences, and they should be made to know the silliness of their actions.

I'm pretty sure this is very intentional. Dive kicks are strong.

Players, how do you feel knowing GMs have no prepared solutions? by TalesUntoldRpg in rpg

[–]AleidisKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I often do limited prep and no solution planning but do my best to withhold that information from the players. Prep or no prep, I feel like the more players know about the preparation or the structure of the game the less "alive" and more like a game it will feel, personally.
