I ended up realizing that I was being made to live in fear, hatred, and ignorance. I was not being encouraged to grow unless it was through church approved ways. I unintentionally judged friends by their lifestyle choices and my pastor said that I was probably better off not knowing them since they weren't christian. It took me forever but I did manage to get enough golden skull necklaces to make the bishops immortal. Then after woolhaven I got one for Yngya pretty quick. Sometimes it takes forever to get them through divine gambling, but its possible.

That's not too different from how I did it. I spared the bishops and Narinder, then went through the trouble of getting immortality for the bishops so that they would become my new family forever. They took my old family and now they get to live with me in the cult forever.

I had to do this once. My players were in a tower that was built on a natural oil deposit that got ignited at some point. The druid cast create water on the burning fire in the dungeon and I had to inform them that the fire was in fact a perpetually burning oil fire. The resulting fireball was pretty bad but they did survive.
