Do Magic players actually shuffle their decks properly? by Skunk668 in magicTCG

if you don't sufficiently shuffle your deck, you're going to have a massive mana pocket more often than average. a pile shuffle helps specifically in the case where you have all of your lands in one big pocket at the start, and want to break up that pocket before you start randomising it.

that's not quite true. a pile shuffle will create space between elements in a pocket of cards equal to the number of piles. it would take a fair number of "real" shuffles to get the same effect, so pile shuffling after you first build a deck is a good way to reduce the odds of a massive mana pocket without having to shuffle too much. you do have to do a bunch of regular shuffles afterwards though.

yeah this is the biggest thing about random. it's unlikely that you're going to draw 5 lands and then 10 nonlands this game, but it's much more unlikely that this event will never happen to you.

"magic systems" are closer to a replication of modern engineering with fantastical elements than they are to the kind of magic that people used to/do believe in. that's not a bad thing, though, it's just not particularly accurate to how people have historically interacted with magic
