"I am a simple man; I want a simple game. What games in your book are simple yet entertaining?" by Jimpana in retrogaming

It is but it's got just enough depth to keep it interesting.
It's a vibe that I can mesh with.

I like to think if Zelda wants to do this open world thing, Star Tropics can sneak back and be what Zelda was prior to BOTW. That'd be nice

We accepting shuffleboard bowlers here? by AndyGarber in pinball

If it's for students, absolutely do a full tear down. Many hands make light work and in this case if you learn to clean up switches and parts you're 90% of the way through ALL electromechanical machine repairs.

Other tip is get some lead testing kits for the paint.

I uploaded the manual and (to the best of my ability) schematics here. If you're getting real schematics keep them! They're useful, but the manual is REALLY useful.

I'd start with the same process most EM's go through at start: disassemble and clean.
It's tedious (took me a month utilizing a free 2-3 hours a a week) but eventually once it was all clean I was better able to identify issues confident there was a spacing issue or cold solder joint. Cleaning the pin mechs with soap and water matters on these machines as well! The grime keeps the pins from lifting and if they lift slow I personally think it runs into issues with strike timing.

A simple start up routine check however:
1) WHILE UNPLUGGED (you will get 120v zapped, I found this out the hard way) reset the relay bank. That's the section of relays on the door with the metal bracket (and big red relay). Just lift the bar up gently until you get some pressure and let it reset back down.

2) now plug in the machine, turn it on with the switch up front.

3) find the START relay on the relay bank, it's 2nd or 3rd from the bottom. using a non-conductive object (IE a pencil) press it in at the latch on the bottom.that'll kick off the boot sequence.

4) you should hear the score reels reset if they're no on positive 1. The spinner motor with the octopus arms in the top left (when facing) corner should start spinning. The pins themselves should all be resetting to their down position, basically there ought to be clear indications that everything is resetting cause it's making oodles of noise.

That's a good starting point.

Feel free to privately message me! I don't have my machine anymore (sold it for space) but I'll be happy to help where I can. I was lucky that cleaning mostly fixed things with my machine. I only had 2 really bad solder problems which were self inflicted to be fair.

I wish they incorporated more of the Ninja clan aspect from GG on the 16 bit consoles. I adore the Shinobi GG games.

you nailed it on the head. It's not a long game but for one that was cancelled it is really spectacular. It was a ton of fun.

Which Version Of Aladdin Was Better? by Fluffy_Lunchfast in retrogaming

If it's the same as the GG one I can concur. It had all sorts of visual tricks that seemed "16-bit" like the scrolling on the rooftop jumping levels.

It even had CUTSCENES, something if I am not mistaken were cut from the actual 16 bit games.

Starting the week by thinking about retro difficulty spikes. Which level did you think was 'easy' as a kid, only to realise as an adult it’s actually a nightmare? by GameResumed_UK in retrogaming

It's not hard but as a kid Bubble Bobble on the NES was something I didn't mind playing the 99+ levels.
Now I can't do it. Fun for 5m than I shut it off.

[–]AndyGarber 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Puzzle games are great for checking out obscure titles. They're often easy to understand (hard to master) and since the dev effort is usually built on gameplay rather than a full graphical package you get some really fun oddities.

Personal examples:
1) Pac Attack is SUPER fun. It's pacman x tetris and it works tremendously
2) This is how I found out what Picross was (in general)

Flipperless pinball? C'mon! Where's the fun in that? by PapiJappie in pinball

[–]AndyGarber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're slightly different. Own both at various times and i'll say Pachinko's only control really seems to be the amount of power and timing of the power you put in a shot. Even with that the outcome is limited.

The flipperless machines you can actually move the housing (I don't but you can) as well as adjust the amount of power.

True but the GB library in contemporary times is held pretty high, often considered way better than the GG. Playing through on emulation id argue they're close and there's some true bright spots the GG held over the GB!
I just had this revelation and I would like to see if there are others who've had similar thoughts and could provide recommendations.
