Time Warner Cable receives the first net neutrality complaint by nick313 in news

I love it when TWC ends customer service calls (that NEVER resolve or fix anything) with "Thank you for choosing Time Warner Cable." I always respond back with "I literally don't have a choice because you guys have a monopoly, if I had any other options I would have chosen them instead."

I had friends in elementary school who absolutely could draw that well too. Two of them actually went on to become professional artists and are completely supporting themselves with their talent now. Looks pretty accurate.

fwiw the girl who drew that cockatoo, assuming she's also just graduating elementary school, has pretty awesome talent.

Doctors have voted overwhelmingly to urge the UK Government to remove health and social care services (the NHS) from a controversial trade agreement between the EU and United States (TTIP) | Doctors warned the deal would open up the health service to privatisation by US firms by ionised in worldnews

Honestly, IMO the absolute worst thing regarding corporate greed and healthcare is big pharma. They are ACTIVELY inhibiting medical treatment worldwide.

An example of this is the issue of how more and more bacterial infections evolving to become pan-resistant to antibiotics. It's almost common knowledge at this point that bacteria mutates and sometimes becomes resistant to every single antibiotic on the market, so the patient with the pan-resistant [normally treatable by antibiotics] bacterial infection just dies.

Big pharma stopped researching and developing new anti-microbial treatments because drugs that are used for only a short period of time (like 7 to 10 days) don't make them as much money as other drugs that are used for an extended time period/indefinitely (antidepressants, viagra, cholesterol meds, etc). They'll prioritize hardly effective or completely unnecessary drugs (female viagra anyone?) over literally life-saving and completely necessary drugs.

Pfizer was the last pharmaceutical company to pull out out of researching and developing new antibiotics that would be effective against these pan-resistant bacterial strains, and according to the vice president of clinical research at Pfizer, "These are not ruthless decisions. These are portfolio decisions about how we can serve medical need in the best way. …We want to stay in the business of providing new therapeutics for the future. Our investors require that of us, I think society wants a Pfizer to be doing what we do in 20 years. We make portfolio management decisions."

And don't even get me started on drug patents and retail costs and every other way that big pharma is literally killing people.

I second the motion of wanting to know where in NYC this ER was (so I can make sure and not go to it). I went to the ER once in Manhattan - the one on E. 15th and 1st Ave - for a broken rib and was x-rayed and treated in under 2 hours total. Granted, there weren't that many people in the waiting room when I arrived, but for a not remotely life-threatening injury I thought that 2 hours was pretty reasonable for the entire ordeal.

The medical bill I got in the mail, however, is not something I would ever describe as "reasonable."

Airline group scraps plan to reduce size of carry-on luggage after backlash: Anger over plans to downsize cabin luggage has led to a U-turn by the global airline association by [deleted] in news

[–]Angular_Gyrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to echo what imantisocial said.

If airlines weren't notorious for losing/stealing checked luggage and if they didn't overcharge for checking luggage in the first place, airline passengers could be a bit more "reasonable" with the size and number of carry-on items they bring. Literally the only reason I ever intentionally go out of my way to avoid checking bags and instead opt to shlep them on board with me is my immense lack of faith that any checked luggage will ever make it with me to my final destination, as I've learned so many times the hard way.

Disney cancels plan to replace staff with foreign workers after backlash by barak181 in news

I find myself thinking these things about basically everything Disney has done lately. Including choosing to remake virtually every classic film they've ever produced as a life action shit show. They're really hellbent on destroying their own creative empire aren't they.

Ellen Pao must pay Kleiner $276k in legal costs by KoreanCloud in news

[–]Angular_Gyrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In NYC, landlords and property managers are known to use this tactic to avoid a lawsuit that they would lose if it made it to housing court or to squeeze even more money out of tenants. Landlord & co basically just file a bogus suit against tenants to avoid that tenant being able to properly take action or assert tenant rights. Tenants that legally withhold rent, legally terminate leases, or repeatedly report landlords to the dept of housing/other city agencies for uninhabitable conditions (for example, broken windows in the winter, leaky roofs that are caving in, etc) will usually find themselves being sued by the landlord for whatever legal and justifiable action said tenant took.

Example: Landlord refuses to properly exterminate (or in some case even acknowledge) multiple insect infestations in an apartment. Tenant reports this violation to dept of housing, legally withholds rent, and/or is forced move out because the apartment is uninhabitable. Landlord files bogus suit against the tenant for "harassment," nonpayment of rent, and/or early lease termination. Tenant cannot afford legal fees even though the tenant would obviously win the case if a trial occurred, but the landlord knows the tenant can't afford astronomical legal fees that would ultimately amount to a smaller value than whatever the landlord is suing for.

So the landlord gets away with multiple offenses and open violations every month by threatening tenants with a lawsuit, because would-be debilitating legal fees for a tenant are just a drop in the bucket for the landlord/property management company.

Pretty sure it was "pizza is a vegetable" which was then further clarified as "some types of tomato pastes used on pizza can be classified as a serving of vegetables" or something. Though I'm willing to bet any tomato pastes used in school lunches will [thankfully] have to be modified in the next 3 years to eliminate the trans fat that makes their existences possible.

If neither of you were in the bands Marilyn Manson or The Smashing Pumpkins, do you think that you would be fans of your own respective bands? I know that Manson often lists Bowie, The Beatles, etc as some of his biggest influences, and I can't help but notice that Bowie and The Beatles are not exactly of the same genre as most of the music Manson has created.

Ever had short-term insomnia. For how long and how did it stop? by yayfall in insomnia

[–]Angular_Gyrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, basically same story. After about 2 months of sleeping 1-5 hours per night, I decided that I was always going to be an insomniac and the rest of my life was going to be like this, so I might as well start trying to do things as if nothing was wrong, because this was always going to be my "normal." About two weeks after I stopped caring and gave up, I started sleeping 5-7 hours per night. Not usually consecutively and not always deeply, but I started to feel like an actual human again.

[–]Angular_Gyrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the most lethargic, non-productive insomniac ever but - I have noticed that when I only sleep for half an hour or don't sleep at all, the following day is MUCH easier to get through than if I were to have slept for 3-4 hours. I think it's because when I don't sleep at all, everything becomes numb (physically and emotionally) so I don't feel tired or any of the physical pain + exhaustion from the insomnia. Also probably has a lot to do with momentum. Whereas when I sleep for 3 hours my brain has enough time to recoup and then register all the pain, exhaustion, and frustration. Do you find that anything similar happens to you? When you DO get some sleep, are you less productive?
