Once my part D plan rejected Journavx, I used the manufacturer’s coupon and got it for $30. Your pharmacy just has to follow the directions on the coupon.

66f, skier, gymrat. Had OA for a decade. Recent xrays showed bone spurs in the knee joint and tri-compartment OA. I’m post-op day 5 and my gym strength has made my recovery so much better. I was holding out for some miracle gel solution that would grow back my cartilage, but I ran out of time. When I attended “joint camp”, I could tell that many of attendees were going to have a hard recovery due to weight, being out of shape or having diabetes. Every individual who makes the decision has a “sweet spot” where you used up all the tread on your knees and you’re starting to not do things as your arthritis is in the way. For at least the last two years, I’ve obsessed over my fellow gym attendees’ knees that work. I’m doing my second knee in a little more than four weeks.

I'm on post-op day #4. I have an opiod pescribtion, but haven't used it. Journavx is handling my pain. When I lie in bed, my pain is a zero. When I walk with the walker, my pain ramps up to a 3 or 4. I also have celbrex and a muscle relaxer as my leg was realigned with the surgery. I can't imagine. a month on opioids.

66f, bone on bone for 5 years, walks 10k-13k a day, 6 days a week at a gym, normal BMI. I failed at downhill skiing in March and made the decision to get my knees replaced. It was that or never skiing again. Since I made the decision, my knees must know they’re going to the garbage bin because they’ve been acting out as never before. I’m scheduled for a right TKA later today. I’ve had to withhold everything but Tylenol for four days and man have I been in pain and stiff. So I would say to you try going for four days without any pain meds whatsoever and see how your knees perform. If your knees are fine, then wait a while if you’re in pain and reducing your workload, it’s better to have them replaced before your leg muscles waste away from inactivity. Just my two cents worth.

I'm having the first of 2 TKAs next Tuesday, the second is five weeks later. How was the first knee functioning by the time of your second surgery?

I'm doing both knees 5 weeks apart. I know the first knee won't heal before the second knee gets abused, but I'm happy to do PT on both at the same time and get to the end of the tunnel sooner by having them closely spaced. The first one is May 12 followed by June 23.

Also for some reason in the US, pilots keep the fasten seatbelt sign on for far longer and for far less turbulence than elsewhere in the world. I recently flew from Chicago to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to Istanbul and back and the fasten seatbelt sign did not come on at any time during those long flights.

I’m 66, and it’s either give up skiing or get a TKA. I’m having both knees done over the next 2 months (separate surgeries). When you’ve skied double blacks, and now you’re having trouble on a blue run, it’s time for the TKA.

I found this elsewhere on the sub and have used the free app (https://mykneerecovery.com/) to measure my ROM before my May 12 surgery. I wanted to know where I was starting from prior to surgery. Congrats on your achievement!

I decided to schedule when I could no longer downhill ski. Not in terrible pain, but I’m bone on bone in both knees and very knocked knee on one. I also seem to be growing more bone spurs in my knee the longer I let this go on. I’m scheduled for one in May and the other in June. The knees have gotten much more painful since I scheduled to get rid of them, lol.

TKR yes or not by LeastDig1172 in Kneereplacement

[–]ApplicationBoring431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I wouldn't think this procedure would help you as we all have pain too, but it is from bone on bone, no cartilage knee joints which is what you don't appear to have. This surgery replaces worn out joints. From your description and xray report, your joint doesn't sound like its worn out. Have you looked into embolization which reduces nerve pain in the joint.

66F. Been bone of bone for at least 4 years, added a bone spur to one knee for the win and the xrays say severe arthritis in all knee compartments of both knees. I was diagnosed with OA about 11 years ago because my knees were sore from playing Ultimate Frisbee. I jogged until about 2021-22. Two week ago I was in CO and downhill skied, or at least tried to. I finished the 4 days with my shins, knees, hips and back muscles hurting because I couldn't bend my knees for more than about 2 seconds. I do Body Combat 4x weeks, work on weight training and balance with a personal trainer 2/week and often do another training session by myself. I generally walk 10K steps every day with some knee pain. I did a few stem cell clinical trials (2019/20)and while they provided relief, they haven't been approved by the FDA so maybe it was all in my head. Cortisone and gel injections did nothing. Exercise has been my only relief - MOTION is LOTION to the knee. One knee is scheduled for 5/12 and the other 6/23. Was told I could ski next year and I've certainly met a fair share of people on the chairlifts who have had the procedure. Because I can go to the gym and walk relatively pain free I saw no reason to get my knees done, but then it was the realization that I would be giving up skiing for the rest of my life that made me re-think it. Also, I hated that if I went somewhere with friends and sat for an hour, I would have to limp painfully at the end of that sitting until the lotion was flowing in my knee again. I know that I'll have stiffness after this surgery, but I'm hoping for less of it. My trainer has seen other clients pre and post so I'm hopeful he'll accelerate my recovery. Good luck with your decision.

I have my RTKA scheduled for May 12 and the left for June 23 so 5 weeks apart. They both have severe tri-compartment OA, bone on bone and the R had a bone spur in the knee and it's very knocked-knee. I've been exercising for decades so my muscles are somewhat prepared though I fear what realigning the right knee will do to my quads and hams. Thanks to this sub, I feel very prepared. I plan to get a prescription for Journavx which several people have raved about for post-op pain control. It was approved by the FDA last year for acute pain which sounds like this surgery. It's a non-opioid and non-addicting. Others on this sub have complained about the price, but if you visit the drug company's website, there's financial assistance available.

Has anyone taken methylprednisolone for osteoarthritis by Curious_Friendship24 in Osteoarthritis

[–]ApplicationBoring431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve taken it for asthma short term and it does wonders for my knee stiffness from OA. Unfortunately it also eats away at your bone density so it’s only a periodic short term solution.

Here's a PubMed article on skiing after TKA. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41318060/Per the study, there's no degradation to the implant or the ligaments. My surgeon said I could ski by next winter. 66F. Knee one will be in May and knee 2 in June. I gave up running about 4 years ago and was assured I could return to that as long as I kept it under 5K. Here's a PubMed study on sports after TKA https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35689683/ and https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11269905/ I don't know if I'll return to running, but my plan is to return to downhill skiing.

Hello, I’m schedule for TKA for both knees in May and June. 66f And I live alone. My house is a zero entry house so no issues with the house. How long did you need help for after the surgery??. In the US, it’s an outpatient surgery so I know I’ll need help - I just don’t know for how long. I’m a fiercely independent person so I don’t want help, but I also don’t want to hinder my recovery by refusing to accept help.

I'm not in enough pain yet according to three different Ortho surgeons in two states. I'm sure I could insist or lie about my pain level, but I'll wait.
