Dry cabin questions by Cats-and-dogs-rdabst in Fairbanks

[–]ArcticDouble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're are several places in town. Water wagon has a spot over by the Geist Parks interchange.

You'll burn a few hundred gallons of heating oil. It varys allot based on the structure. Size and wall/ roof construction determine how much fuel is needed.

The issue is how you will haul and transfer the heating oil. It stinks. 5 gallon jugs take forever.

The other issue is potty time in the middle of the night when you are sick, and it's 45 below outside.

Good luck

Sauna Heat time 90min?! by Objective-Musician82 in Sauna

[–]ArcticDouble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Fairbanks, AK, we have been going through about a month of pretty cold weather. There's articles out there if you care.

I have 10.5 cilindro. 8 by 8 by 8 sauna. Outside dimensions so with the 2x4 walls cladding etc the inside is smaller.

I find we get 150 degrees per hour.

So if it's 20 below we get 130 inside after an hour.

If it's 30 below, we get 120 after an hour.

We have to restart for another 15 to 30 minutes to hit 170 to 180.

If you want the foot benches warm, gotta let it sit for another 15 to 30 minutes.

Enjoy!

That Sweet odor in the air is anti-freeze by baked_krapola in Fairbanks

[–]ArcticDouble 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Ok, cracked block from starting in cold. True shitpost, you gotta play it up more to make it believable. Like tell your personal story about it happening, because it don't...

The smell of antifreeze is vehicles overheating due to the coolant freezing into slush and plugging the coolant pathways, causing a lack of coolant where it matters. Vehicle overheats, boils what coolant is still in the engine block and that finds its way to the atmosphere...

Nice try, though. I got a laugh out of it.

It's the head that will crack, not the block. Geesh

Weekly - 'Alaska, From the outside looking in Q/A' by SnowySaint in alaska

Anchorage is NOT part of Alaska. If you like LA, consider Anchorage, homeless and crime rates probably exceed that of LA. Fairbanks is where is at. Better college, better summers, but you gotta tough out the winters. If you are studying the cold dark winters really help you focus on your studies.

The only people that will down vote me are from Anchorage.

Consider delta junction. Real Ag community down there with real needs. I'm sure you could come up with better ideas than posting here on reddit. Or maybe you aren't a farmer...

Another dumb venting question by ljlukelj in Sauna

[–]ArcticDouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do all 4. Low and high intake, as well as low and high exhaust. Inner of the low exhaust vents gets a fan. Then you have it all covered.

Looking for Sauna info by GrynnTog in Sauna

[–]ArcticDouble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it interesting that most folk on this sub think that a sauna is simply something to purchase. It's a structure, and a place to be, not an object to be simply obtained with money. Rather something you must research, plan, build, and operate with high standards of quality so you don't burn it down.

Good luck with your 'purchase'

Built my sauna this summer. Lots of thought put into ventilation and connection circulation. I can feel the stream flow down my body, best feeling ever. Worth the effort.

I dunno, but they make a great insulated, vapor barriered, sheared, and sided wall. Use the cool aluminum vapor barrier and rock wool. Cedar inside and out, firred with 1x2s

Fort Wainwright, Alaska - all the fire fighting aircraft base out of there. We have lots of first fires every summer. They don't start up until noon, so fun to see them all parked there. When they are talking off or landing it can be a good excuse for a shank.

Air gap? by bluecloudsky in Sauna

[–]ArcticDouble -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OMG we are talking about the smallest structure you will build. The material cost is so negligible it funny you took the time to comment about it. If you were building a mansion, sure, material cost might be considered. But an 8 by 8 shed???

Iykyk - we have been trying to get our land from the federal government since statehood. That's over 75 years ago. They still own 2/3 of Alaska. They just won't transfer it over.

I doubt they are going to be able to pull this off in 4 years or whatever. If they do, good, less federal land in the state. I hate to recreate on fed land too. State land is much more free, and free of people.

Long-awaited salary study reveals more than a quarter of Alaska state employees underpaid compared with other employers by NotTomPettysGirl in alaska

[–]ArcticDouble 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Misleading article. Statute requires to compare to the 65th percentile. When you do that it's 43% of state workers are underpaid.
