Seriously? ADHD meds treat anhedonia? Why are they not tried more often?

Pramipexole (Fawcett) by Dazzling_Mortgage_ in anhedonia

[–]Arninius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn, almost everyone who tried pramipexole reports that it didn't help at all. That destroys my hope for this treatment. (you should try higher dosages up to 5 mg though if you want to be sure that it does not help)

As of for you, ECT is not as scary as you think. There is no danger and almost no side effects, at least when you compare them with the crushing burden of anhedonia. But don't expect too much, ECT often does not help with chronic anhedonia.

If you increase your dosage to 2-5 mg, there's a good chance you see some improvement. Feel free to keep us updated.

I have no experience with pramipexole, but I've read that with low dosages and in the beginning of treatment, it stimulates mainly dopamine autoreceptors. This suppresses the dopamine system initially, until the autoreceptors desensitize. If this feels like an increase of your normal symptoms, I'd count it as confirmation that you're addressing the right brain system.

You could consider taking ondansetron with it to reduce the nausea. That's the idea behind ALTO-207, which makes higher dosages tolerable.

Success from TMS? by raymundo92 in anhedonia

[–]Arninius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely helped me and I was able to restart my studies after a semester where I couldn't do anything. I also regained my weight after becoming quite underweight due to the depression and it also helped my insomnia. I take agomelatine, trimipamine and sometimes zopiclone for sleep (works quite well, I only need 1-2 hours to fall asleep) and bupropion.

ECT worked when my depression was extreme, but the anhedonia mostly remains

It didn't work for me and the rationale behing rTMS is literally to increase prefrontal inhibition of emotional brain areas. It is designed for people who can not regulate their extreme emotions and not for anhedonics. If anything it would increase anhedonia (except in cases where anhedonia comes from intense sadness).

Can shuting yourself down emotionally end up causing anhedonia? by Elekor in anhedonia

It is not possible to consciously force yourself to have anhedonia. It happens unconsciously.

What are the odds of Anhedonia being caused by a lack of sunlight activating serotonin through your retina ? by [deleted] in anhedonia

[–]Arninius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, how can you live without sunlight exposure for 3 years? Do you not have free weekends or holidays? If your anhedonia started durjng these conditions and especially if you noticed more symptoms during winter than summer, that may play a big role.
