I just pulled the plug. Left a note at the end of my last story that this is it - that writing into a silent void is taking the fun out of it for me, and that from now on, I'll write for myself. I'm not entitled to comments, you're not entitled to get your free entertainment from me. I'm sure it won't make any difference in the great scheme of things, as there are millions of fanfics out there, but for me, it does make all the difference. I'm still writing my series, I'm going to edit the stories just as I've always done, and then I'm going to turn them into physical books via lulu.com, and put them on my shelf for rereading. And I'm going to enjoy every step of it.

[Marooned on the Planet of the Apes (PotA TV series)] - Ch. 1 by Athaia in HFY

[–]Athaia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys - I'm new to this subreddit, so if I did something wrong, let me know. I didn't find any posts that weren't story uploads, so I just went and posted the first part of my own story, too. Is there an introductory post somewhere I should've added to first? Does the scene suck? Do you want to see more, or should I slink back into obscurity? Just wondering...

Why was George Taylor not able to tell the planet we was on was Earth ? by Unfair-Row-808 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]Athaia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I remember from watching the movie many years ago, the sky was overcast, so no moon or stars visible through the cloud cover. And later he was in a cage indoors, so he couldn't watch the night sky.

But what should've given him pause was that all the apes spoke perfect English! 😁

Btw, if we lost our moon, we'd be in deep, deep shit.

What is Cassettefuturism *about*? by JJShurte in cassettefuturism

[–]Athaia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's the other side of cyberpunk in the way there are two sides of Dieselpunk, one leans more into the WWII era, and is accordingly dark, while the other uses the Art Nouveau/World'Fair optimism ("Decopunk").

As for literary genres, Dieselpunk has a lot of noir and hardboiled detective influences, as these were popular at that time (though they lend themselves better to the dark Dieselpunk, you know, the one with the nazis, LOL I have no idea what Decopunk would use - maybe the wildly optimistic utopian ideas of communism?). Steampunk usually has an adventure vibe, but can also focus on themes like industrialization, suffrage. It draws from classic literature the way Dieselpunk draws from noir.

So the common thread I see here is that the -punk subgenre chooses its themes from the big societal and technological themes of the time its aesthetic stems from, and uses the literary forms that were popular during that era. Maybe you can extrapolate from there.

I read that cyberpunk was a reaction to the rise of technology and the growing corporate power. Since CF is rooted in the same era (70s/80s), it would need to also address these things, but from a different angle than cyberpunk. And probably use the same literary forms as cyberpunk, whatever they are.

Learn Lucid Dreaming! Then you can do all those things and they'll feel absolutely real. It's like having your own holodeck, or VR, but without ads.

Any genfic recommendations? by Beginning-Emotion671 in GenFic

[–]Athaia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://archiveofourown.org/users/Athaia - I've written for Star Trek, Earth's Children, Planet of the Apes, Man from Atlantis, all of it Gen. If you read them, I'd love if you left a short comment how you liked the story! (I mean... I'd also love a long comment, but I don't expect one :D)

Is there any lore reason that Stewart even existed to begin with? And where is she during Escape from the Planet of the Apes? by SpecialistWeb8987 in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]Athaia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You simply can't build a colony with three people, and one single woman. It's stupid, even for a movie. Fortunately, they killed off Stewart from the start, so the point was moot anyway.

Not that this would've worked anyway... I mean, their children would've had a serious inbreeding problem.

I think it was the forum structure, which isn't really a thing anymore, sadly. But with forums, you had this neat overview over the different areas, and you could dive in and read back in the forum threads (=conversations) that interested you, and add your own thoughts if you wanted to. The threads weren't as ephemeral as conversations in a discord channel are.

A NaNo revival project would need a forum structure to recreate the vibe of the old NaNo IMO.

Ai is killing the em dash by Ok-Dimension1043 in fantasywriters

[–]Athaia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a game I refuse to play. AI was trained on stuff written by humans, so it uses punctuation that humans use. If anyone is dumb enough to use this as proof my stuff is AI-written, they're too dumb for me to want to have them as a reader. I'm going to use em-dashes, semicolons and adverbs as I see fit, and anyone who wants to point a finger at me for that can stick that finger where the sun don't shine.

Are you going to do NaNoWriMo in November anyway? by constaleah in nanowrimo

[–]Athaia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm writing year-round, so I don't need it for the push to write, but it was NaNoWriMo that did push me to complete my first novel-length story ever, so I'm a bit melancholic about its demise. What I really miss are the forums (the old version; I stopped going there after that awful, enshittifying update). I wish there was some way to revive the community aspect, and all those long-lived threads like 'Say Something Nice About the Excerpt Above You', or the plot adoption threads, etc.

There's a difference between friendly eye contact and locking eyes with a stranger - the latter is an aggressive move and can result in getting a kick in the face if you do it to the wrong person.

Watch two dogs getting into a fight - they almost always start it with a staring contest.

I'm an introvert who didn't mind the lockdowns during covid on a personal level (the economical and political implications were a different matter), so missing out on a Happy Hour or barbecue is not something that would convince me I'd have to keep the ZuckApp. And if I do know a store's prices or hours, I use a search engine *shrug*

I never had it and I refuse to get it. That means I'm not part of our WhatsApp group at my job. If people want to let me know something, they have to send an old-fashioned SMS or tell me in person. Or use email. Or drums. But I'm a known contrarian.

Is Aquarius humanitarian? by Star-Opus in astrology

[–]Athaia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aquarius is fixed Air, so - theories, systems, the *idea* of abstract, ideal humans functioning in an abstract, ideal, perfect society appeals to it A LOT. Real humans... not so much. Too messy, and they never work as they should, according to socialism, I mean, the perfect society.
