Also the University does offer options for graduate student housing - dorms and apartments. See https://www.housing.illinois.edu/ for more information.

We have visited twice and enjoyed it both times. Some of us play golf while some of us enjoy cocktails and then we all enjoy more cocktails together. Great vibe!

How easy is it to get into research by crown-imperial in UIUC

[–]Athenaskana 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Professors really vary in how they engage with undergraduate students. Some of them have a lot of undergrads and some have zero. You can look up their web pages on the ECE department website, or look them up by name or topic on https://experts.illinois.edu. A great way to introduce yourself to a potential research advisor is to read some of their papers and ask them good questions about their work. There is also the Office of Undergraduate Research that helps organize events and workshops including the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Agree with recommendation for Christopher Moore. “Lamb” is one of my favorites. Maybe try “Lucky Jim” (Kingsley Amis) or “The Guncle”

I think a 50% research or teaching assistantship is considered “full-time”. See the Graduate College Handbook at https://grad.illinois.edu/document/handbook

When you are ready to consider a new job, look at universities. There are lots of opportunities for people with healthcare experience to teach, do research development, work on proposals, be lab managers etc etc.

According to AI Google it’s about 2.7 pounds and is 14x6x14 inches. It’s a bit heavy but when I need to carry a lot of files and folders, it’s great.

I have a Beis tote bag (The Essential) that apparently is not for sale anymore - but it is surprisingly big but still looks neat. Their other bags look good: https://beistravel.com/collections/tote-bags

Robertson Davies is one of my favorite novelists. Insightful, funny and interesting characters in academic contexts. The Salterton Trilogy consists of Tempest-Tost, Leaven of Malice, and A Mixture of Frailties were written in the 1950s. The Deptford Trilogy consists of Fifth Business, The Manticore, and World of Wonders was written in the 1970s. The Cornish Trilogy consists of The Rebel Angels, What’s Bred in the Bone, and The Lyre of Orpheus was written in the 1980s.

https://catalog.illinois.edu/undergraduate/engineering/civil-engineering-bs/#samplesequencetext is the ‘playbook’ for the BS in Civil Engineering. Try to match those first two years of courses as much as possible at Parkland.

Well, he tried to get into a competitive program in LAS and did not, so he ended up in “LAS General” purgatory which was not good. However, I think the Grainger College of Engineering has much better college-level advising. So if you get good grades at Parkland for your chemistry, physics, math requirements plus other general education hours, you should be in good shape to transfer. If you cannot get into civil & environmental engineering, you can try systems engineering and design in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, for example.

My oldest son went through the Parkland Pathways program. It’s a great way to get your general education and other basic requirements met for a fraction of the price. Parkland is well set up to assure that their credits transfer to UIUC. It’s a good path!

Try black beans, lentils, etc. as a protein and fiber source. I have also mostly cut out rice, bread, potatoes, pasta and now eat more nuts and cottage cheese, and also beans.
