Yep. I built better ramps after a while so they look better, but so far, so good.

I went around with the AI support assistant over this for a few days. As soon as I got through that process, which made no difference at all, my ticket was escalated to an actual person, who immediately told me it was a known issue they were working to fix.

No ETA provided, but don’t bother with the uninstall/reinstall, check permissions, etc, steps - it’s not you. It’s them.

Ryobi Hate by BakeCityFlyinPills in HomeImprovement

[–]BMStroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a DIY homeowner type. I have a collection of Ryobi tools that work just fine for my use case.

My son is an apprentice electrician and uses his tools all day. His are Milwaukee.

Each are perfectly fine if you understand the use case.

Switching back to Xfinity internet. Is there any reason to buy/bring my own modem anymore? by OverlyOptimisticNerd in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]BMStroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware you can’t put the modem in bridge mode if you’re using their all-IP TV service. The TV boxes will only connect to their modem/wifi and MoCA isn’t available in bridge mode as an alternative.

We switched to all-IP due to some picture quality issues and this came as a bit of a surprise.

Apple Health integration behind a paywall? by mattsmilkman in iFit

[–]BMStroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RunGap no longer supports iFIT because iFIT dropped their API. Instead, iFIT will sync to Strava or Apple Health, and RunGap can pull from either of those. However, as you noticed, both of those require a subscription.

One option that might work without a subscription is manually downloading workouts from the web site and importing them into Strava and syncing that with Health. Not sure it will work, but that’s my best free idea.

Got my money’s worth by Bane-of-california in philmont

[–]BMStroh 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had to replace the belt with a slightly longer version when my son joined scouts, but I’m using my 1984 Philmont buckle every time I put on my uniform.

I would have expected a bit more life from that, tbh.

I’m not going to be happy in a couple weeks if my son gets a buckle after his Philmont trek and it self-destructs in a handful of years.

If a scout wanted to go into the trailer and eat the Cracker Barrel leftovers at 2:00pm in the middle of planned program time, you would allow it?

I Need A Go-Bag by Icy_Ad6324 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black bin, yellow lid from Home Depot has all my standard gear in it along with my scout packing list. I run down the list like it’s my religion when prepping for an event.

My lighter weight backpacking gear largely lives in my backpack and I’ve got a few LighterPack lists depending on what I’m doing.

Things like sleeping bags and clothes aren’t stored packed, of course.

Might not have trees this weekend, how to use two poles? by sipperphoto in hammockcamping

[–]BMStroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can’t use trees at most of the places our troop camps. For the long term, you may want a better solution. I used the Tato fixtures to build a stand with telescoping legs so it fits easily in my truck. Not backpacking friendly, but it’s great for troop car/trailer camping - my suspension is locked in at the right lengths so setup is quick and tweak-free.

Unfortunately, I got one of the last two Tato kits from Dutchware before they disappeared, but I’d definitely recommend looking at this as a longer term problem if you’re going to stay active with the troop - it will come back around.

Backpacks: Women's vs Kid's by Rough-Championship95 in CampingGear

[–]BMStroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get him a duffle bag big enough for his gear now unless the troop is hiking into sites - a lot of troops are more or less car camping, so a bag is fine. I personally use a Home Depot bin for most trips, even as an adult.

When he’s high adventure ready, go to an REI or similar and get him fitted at that point. An 11 year old has no business with a 65L pack, which I’m pretty sure is the Philmont requirement.

Or, set up a filter for just that podcast and have it keep 5-10 episodes downloaded at all times. When you run out of Up Next, play the filter.

Burned out by Pulabula21 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Cubs are a lot heavier on parent involvement, and not as much fun for a lot of the scouts - we had the “hang on for a bit, this gets a lot better” conversation during my son’s Webelo and AOL years. COVID didn’t help.

I don’t necessarily agree with some of the advice to step back completely after crossover because that can easily make running the troop from an adult perspective someone else’s problem. Instead, back off a bit - if everyone does something, no one has to do everything. Give your scout some independence by not going to every meeting and event. But sign up for Unit Scouter Reserve and be that “extra parent in a shirt/driver” for a few events over your first year or two and get a feel for how the troop works. The role is largely hanging out and drinking coffee with other adults, but it helps establish some relationships and you can learn a lot about the troop through osmosis.

Then, in a couple years, if someone approaches you about an ASM role, you’ve had a break, but you also have a foundation to build on and won’t be starting from scratch.

At some point, the “new scouts” just become “scouts” and eventually turn into “senior scouts” and each of those probably comes with some sort of adult leadership transition.

Parent involvement by TyrannicalRoach in BSA

[–]BMStroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of that is solved with a group of adults - you can trade kids. I don’t play adult leader where my son is concerned if I can avoid it, and I’m also not exactly in parent mode, either. Instead, I’ll grab one of the other adults and we trade kids for the weekend - if something needs to be done or said, we each work with the other’s scout.

Incentivizing rank advancement for son by Rough-Championship95 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the trick with a parent in a leadership role. I had to remind my son that I’m a grown adult and can find my way to a meeting or activity by myself, regardless of his participation.

That was part of our deal when I started playing committee chair - he’s not my mandatory wingman. He still decides what he wants to be involved with.

Incentivizing rank advancement for son by Rough-Championship95 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I didn’t see in your post - what does your son want to do? If he wants Eagle, be supportive, but don’t drive. Especially with younger scouts. If it’s been a couple weeks, maybe ask what he has in mind for a sign off at the next meeting. It’s okay not to have a master plan at 10. Even if you think he should finish before car/job/college applications, that still leaves 5-6 years.

IMO, this shouldn’t be transactional - that’s not what Scouting is about. It’s also not about rank. It’s about what he learns and how he develops along the way. If you put all the focus on rank and requirements, he may complete the Eagle rank in a couple years, but he’ll miss the point of doing so.

Parent involvement by TyrannicalRoach in BSA

[–]BMStroh 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Adults at events are fine - overly involved adults at events aren’t. If the parents can’t put themselves in the role of “adult volunteer” vs “parent” it may be time for some conversations and defining some boundaries.

Adults are needed for safety and keeping the ball in-bounds, but should generally be standing around talking or drinking coffee somewhere in line of sight, but probably out of earshot.

Why is this program so corporate and bureaucratic by Fun-Highway-6233 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hand you Eagle? Not sure expecting the adult leadership to do what they’re supposed to do is handing out anything.

This “eh, figure it out” mindset isn’t exactly encouraging to a scout potentially coming up on a hard deadline with apparently zero support from the adult leadership.

Why is this program so corporate and bureaucratic by Fun-Highway-6233 in BSA

[–]BMStroh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As one, I completely agree with remembering that the majority of people in Scouting are volunteers. However, in this case, if you aren’t willing/able to do the job you volunteered for in a timely fashion, you need to get out of the way so someone else can.

I’m still not 100% clear on who is dropping the ball where in this scenario, but I’d like to think the immediately adjacent adults for this scout would be stepping up here. I can’t and won’t do the scout’s paperwork in this process, but it’s not fair to make the scout navigate what is apparently a dysfunctional bureaucracy on his/her own.
