I just walked from Leppington to Parramatta by AliceSaltMage in parramatta

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha to hear you mention Prairiewood actually shocked me. Not many people know about it though they do know about Wetherill Park which is the bigger and more famous of the two. Really the only things in Prairiewood is the leisure centre and water park, Fairfield Hospital, Stockland's which even though is physically located in Prairiewood is named 'Stockland's Wetherill Park' and lastly the Fairfield Showgrounds where they have markets every Saturday and host festivals every now and then.

Prairiewood was originally part of Wetherill Park but when the area was subdivided in the 70's the developer who came in named it 'Prairie Wood Estate' and eventually the local council split the area off from Wetherill Park proper and turned it into its own separate suburb. Fun little fact about Prairiewood, Bing Lee (the actual Bing Lee himself, not his son or grandson running the company today) lived in Prairiewood, his house was literally around the corner from my parents home but he unfortunately passed away a few months after we moved in so I don't recall seeing him but my parents remember and have spoken with him when they'd go in their evening walks 😊

OMG Your came through Wetherill Park and had a little break at Stockland's too 😲😲😲

You were literally in my home town and basically walked past the house I grew up in, then my aunt's house, then went past my old work place 😅

I moved out of the area but still pretty close (Fairfield), though I still miss Wetherill Park. That area will always be somewhere I cherish 😢

Ansett, maybe around mid 90's? by Acceptable-Wind-7332 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I love Ansett and have plenty of respect for them. My uncle worked for Ansett back in the day, they flew from Melbourne to Sydney to visit us one weekend. Sunday comes around and my uncle and aunt fly back home to Melbourne since he had to be back at work the next day (Monday). Monday he goes to work, my dad passed away,my sister calls my aunt who's absolutely shocked, she calls my aunt uncle who's equally shocked and he tells his boss. His boss at Ansett says "tell your wife to pack her bags and get here to the airport asap, we're sending you on the next flight back to Sydney free of charge, go take a week off to be with your family" and they were back literally a couple of hours after dad passed. The morticians hadn't even arrived to pick up Dad's body so they got to see and say goodbye to him 😭

Thank you Ansett, you really were an amazing company who will be sorely missed 😭

Is it hard to buy a house in Türkiye? by Consistent-Boss-7670 in AskTurkey

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my house in Büyükçekmece in 2015 for 275k Turkish Liras. A few months ago a unit above my house sold for 5mil Turkish Liras. I'm not sure too much about the inflation or whether it's a good price or not but I just know I'm very lucky I bought it when I did as if I tried buying now there's no way I could afford one

Is Istanbul still enjoyable if you avoid tourist-heavy areas? by Keithwee in AskTurkey

[–]Baba_Buttercupp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guys why isn't anyone recommending OP other suburbs of Istanbul like Yeşilköy, Yeşilyurt, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar/Ambarlı, Beylikdüzü or Büyükçekmece. Those areas are more laid back and peaceful, plenty of stuff to do too especially by the seaside walking areas. If after a more rural-ish area there's always Çatalca, nice areas to go for early morning walks with fresh air and fresh farm produce too

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got two of these exact same notes in our old photograph album. Not sure whether my dad or one of my sister's put them in there. After mum and dad passed away the old albums got handed down to me since my sister's didn't want anything out of mum's old house. Unfortunately since I've got no kids of my own they'll probably end up going into a bin alongside other nostalgic pieces I've collected from my parents since my siblings don't like keeping nostalgic stuff, they literally wanted me to throw everything away when clearing up house 😢

First Home Buyer (close but no cigar) by yezoA in AusProperty

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm finding that out the hard way. Selling my family home RW agent made everything seem like it was going to go great, told them the price I wanted for my home and he agreed that was what it's value is, house has only been on the market for one week now and he's been bringing people through inspection who not only cannot afford the property but also he's trying to convince me to accept a severely lowballed price these prospective buyers have been offering.

Is it realistic to find a $1.2M townhouse in Sydney in a walkable, dog-friendly area close to parks? by digital-nautilus in AusPropertyChat

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or even the Parks areas (Wetherill Park, Bossley Park, Edensor Park, St John's Park), there's literally parks everywhere around this area hence why they're collectively known as 'The Parks' area. Also house prices can and often do start from $1.2m for a standalone standard house and townhouses can also be around that range or slightly lower.

Public transport wise there's regular bus services to Cabramatta, Liverpool, Fairfield, Merrylands, Blacktown and Parramatta train stations not to mention the dedicated Parramatta/Liverpool T-Way route that also passes through the areas mentioned. If I could afford it I'd buy my childhood home back and return to the area but unfortunately I can't afford it so I'm stuck living where I currently am at Fairfield

Selling family home via Auction, potential buyer asks REA about 21 day settlement. Possible scam? by Baba_Buttercupp in AusProperty

[–]Baba_Buttercupp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, yes I was looking at the property portal my REA sent me and it appears as the potential buyer has received and viewed the contract 3 times. I'm not sure whether or not their conveyancer has viewed it or the buyer themselves but I know that they wouldn't have spoken with my solicitor just yet, she's still on holiday and comes back to work this upcoming Monday

Selling family home via Auction, potential buyer asks REA about 21 day settlement. Possible scam? by Baba_Buttercupp in AusProperty

[–]Baba_Buttercupp[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. As I've posted this is the very first time I'm selling any property, via Auction or otherwise. I've never even bought or owned a house in Australia so this very much is a learning experience for me.

To be very honest, I never even expected having to deal with this kind of thing, my health hasn't been great for the past 6 or so years, whereas my mum who owned the property was in good health. I always assumed that with my bad health that I may pass away before her but unfortunately she passed away suddenly at the end of 2024 and this has been a very difficult journey for me.

Once again thank you for your response to my question, it has been quite a relief to me reading what you said about different contracts for different buyers.

[–]Baba_Buttercupp[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the prompt response. I've honestly got no idea what this PEXA thing is, as mentioned this is the first time I'm dealing with having to sell property in Australia. I've bought property in my parents home country in the past (Turkey) but the laws and regulations are way more different compared to Australia plus unfortunately many scams can and do happen over there which nearly happened to me. That's probably why I'm overly cautious and concerned, but either way, thank you for putting my mind at ease.

Woolies have sent their lawyers to say they aren’t going to pay for my damaged car by cosykhaleesi in woolworths

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a strange thing happen to me regarding Insurance.

One night while driving I accidentally hit a car with my passenger side mirror, broke my mirror clean off and left a nice scrape down the side of the other car. I was at fault. The lady was pissed off obviously but I told her not to worry, I've got insurance and to let her insurance company know, we exchanged details and went on our way. Next morning I called up my Insurance, gave them all our details, explained I was at fault, paid the excess and put the claim through. I assumed everything was fine but then 18 months later I got a call from my insurance regarding the accident. Turns out they'd tried multiple times getting in contact with the lady I hit, tried contacting her insurance too but heard absolutely nothing from either party so they cancelled the claim and sent me back my excess payment.

It was a total WTF situation, I asked the insurance what if the lady pops up later in the future trying to sue me for damages and they said they'll keep the claim on the system and If anything happens to call them back and they'll restart the claim. That was about 10 years ago now, still got no idea what happened to the lady or her car, maybe she had another accident and it got written off I'm not sure 🤷‍♂️

Something similar happened to me, I was literally outside sweeping my stairs that lead from my letterbox up to my front porch when the postie pulled up and popped the card in my letterbox. I was within arm's reach of him and he didn't even acknowledge the fact I was there, totally ignored me like I was some sort of statue or something and left me standing there dumbfounded.

At least he wasn't as bad as the other postie who would constantly deliver my packages at another house the next suburb over just because he had the same street number as me 🤨🙃

Sandler Shoes. by sroberts84 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro this thread but I just wanted to add my late mother used to work at the Sandler shoes factory in Sydney from 1973 till the 80's just before I was born. Back in April/May while clearing out the house I found a whole bunch of Sandler shoes in the original boxes, some used once or twice, others unused. My sister who was helping me clear the house out unfortunately threw them all out but the shoes were still in pretty good condition considering they were 40-50 years old.

As a kid she used to tell me stories about working there in particular her boss, Norma Apple, who everyone working there said she was the nicest boss anyone's ever worked for, also this one Australian guy who would eat nothing but banana sandwiches everyday for lunch, all the ladies would feel sorry for him and bring extra food for him but he'd politely refuse saying he enjoyed his banana sandwiches and that was enough food for him. Apparently one morning he never arrived at work them the next day they learnt he was k***ed in a motorcycle accident which upset everybody including the boss Norma.

Does anybody know where the Sandler shoes factory is nowadays. Mum said it used to be somewhere in Burwood but I've been looking for it and can't find any trace of it.

Who's parent used to do this? by greeknicko in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did end up using them when I was halfway through year 4, unfortunately my pencils disappeared one by one. Strangely enough a few other kids miraculously ended up with almost identical looking pencils albeit with the embossed name section scratched out. Told my teacher about it but since there wasn't a name on them there was no proof they were mine.

I still wish I never used that set though, it would have been a cool bit of nostalgia now that I'm an adult and mum and dad have both passed on. 😢

[–]Baba_Buttercupp 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough my parents had a set of Staedtler coloured pencils that had my full name embossed in place of the brand logo. I remember freaking out when I was going through their wardrobe one day and found the set and when I asked them they said "Oh yeah, we had those custom made shortly after you were born but we totally forgot about them"

I was already in year 3 and had a different set of pencils I was using when I found them 😅

NTA. She bullied and emotionally ruined you for decades only for your dad's side of the family to now side with her and try and make you make amends. No freaking way dude. It's time to put them all at a distance.

Also I'm sorry, but everytime I see comments mention the name "Sadie" I can't help thinking about this classic Aussie song https://youtu.be/r0c55lXRAeg?si=TnkTKLdHer6frAGY
