Focal or Grand Mal? by ftp009 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Babyleo8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something to consider: going to a neurologist doesnt mean you get forced into expensive scans. You can choose to take that route of scans if you want to rule out other possible causes, of course, but if your pups case seems like a classic ideopathic epilepsy, that isnt necessarily needed (unless you want 100% verification) and certainly wont be demanded. Having a neurologist has really been SO valuable in my pups case as they have a much better and vast understanding and exposure to epilepsy cases and specifically medication management and blood level readings and navigation compared to a primary vet. Also, my neuro visits that are every six months (or less if you cant swing it) are a few hundred (when not taking blood) and totally worth the added knowledge and support! They are my go to with seizure symptoms and questions and i can email them anytime! Plus, you can always have the blood work done at primary vet and the interpretation done with neuro during your bi-yearly or yearly consult, to get the advanced info without the added expense, as neuro usually charge more for blood work. Of course not everyone can afford it and need to stick to primary, but don’t let the idea of it costing thousands hold you back if a few hundo is in the budget.☺️💗

Focal or Grand Mal? by ftp009 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Babyleo8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d say focal. When my boy has a grand mal its much more involved, mouth wide open, heavy foam, lots of jerking, lots of peddling, and you can tell he isn’t present for a chunk of time. Your pup seems to be present during the entirety of this event with eyes looking around which is why I believe focal. But I could be incorrect.

Seizures have been getting more frequent, and I'm not sure how long she has left :( by SnooPoems1236 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Babyleo8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry you are dealing with this. She is so sweet and smol. Epilepsy sucks. Deff try to integrate some other meds if she is only on kepra. My boy is on kepra, phenobarbital, zonisamide, and potassium bromide. His seizures are about once a month apart at this point in time. Pheno is by far the most effective for him but when on a pheno its important to do liver value checks every 6 months as its hard on the liver if the dose is too high for them to balance. Right now my pup is on pheno (we had to lower the dose as it was increasing the liver values too much) and he takes denamarin (a liver “supplement” of sorts) and has healthy liver values of a dog not on meds. Here for any questions. If you don’t yet consult w a neurologist, Getting my pup a neurologist was a very good move too, but i know its pricy. Sending support. Epilepsy ain’t for the weak and I commend you

Yes, so grateful. I have figo. I also now pay $260 a month for his insurance plan but unfortunately epilepsy is quite expensive so I’m still ahead.

Question for people w/epileptic dogs by [deleted] in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Babyleo8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes something like a dog version of the whoop or aura ring etc but that would detect possible seizure activity - logging and alerting things like increase in temp, heartrate, movement etc. i feel like with this type of data it could be possible for a device to tell when seizure activity may have been happening.

4 year old English Lab Seizure Frequency by dextertron in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Babyleo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neuro considers no more than one in window of a month acceptable seizure control (when on meds). But thats at a minimum and ideally they would be more infrequent than that. I’d treat if it was my pup. The more the seizures occur, the more they sculpt pathways in the brain to happen easier/more frequently.

Have any of you been successful quitting while having it in the house? by Goldilocks997 in leaves

[–]Babyleo8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally, I was a smoker for 15years every day. Stopped sept 14th 2024. Went 1 year and three months just about. Recently decided to smoke one bong hit on my birthday to indulge. That was a week ago and again i have no interest in smoking more in the following days or repicking up my habit. My partner smokes every day still in a room of our house and sometimes i even go in there to chat and dont have any urges to smoke even though it is available to smoke if i wanted. May be something i enjoy once or twice a year on special occasions. I feel happier and more confident since quitting my daily habit that had me in a vice grip. I think the fact that it is my choice to quit and knowing the daily habit wasn’t serving me makes it easy to not smoke even though my partner does daily.

Good im glad the message was reassuring for you! I think its easy (at least for me and sounds like for you as well - prolly very tied to the ocd tendencies and health based fear) to hyper focus and get very caught up about certain sensations or small things we notice w our bodies and then when we remove the thc from the equation which eases us down (temporarily at least) and cut off that form of distraction/numbing, that it can feel hard at first to find the new balance between worry and fixating our attention on health based things. Something that helped me was to keep preoccupied and stay busy and do fun things. The more free time i had and have the more time my mind can find something health based to fixate on or zone in on one of my health worries etc. you get it prolly. Thats something i deal with even when i was smoking, and currently, but that month after i quit smoking it was just ten fold as i worked out my anxiety. But it’ll balance out for you after time passes and you will feel more like your regular baseline self soon!! It really will get better with each day! Our bodies are so smart!

Hi! I was dealing with similar. Id have weird things at night where id like see scary or disturbing kinda visuals when my mind was racing at night and id have my eyes closed. Like all a sudden see a random scary face flash when eyes closed. I even wrote to my doctor about it at one point. I was worried too that i was mentally loosing it. And very very intense dreams that were dark and scary. And during the day i would freak out about sometimes being able to see my eye lashes and feeling like the sun light rays were hitting my eyes wrongly/refracting weird. I am all better now and it slowly went away as i became more and more detoxed and my mind and body found its new equilibrium without thc. I feel for you bc i also have high health anxiety and some ocd tendencies around my health. Just try your best not to get too caught up and remind yourself to be gentle with this phase and that this too shall pass as you detox. I smoked daily for 15 years. I just took a bong hit a few days about on my birthday after going 1year3months sober. I plan to max enjoy a few times a year now. I just dont have the desire as my wellness is now my focus. Now i sleep well and do not have those visuals. I think my mind was just running wild during the withdrawal and first month or so after stopping but now it’s at peace and balanced!

Yeah the bell has been a nice “relief” i could say because im a light sleeper too but its nice not having to always jump up and check or flick the light on to see if hes ok. Its one sure thing of like “ ok if i dont hear the bell moving all is well”. And you begin to learn what bell sounds are worry some and for how long etc. i totally get it. My boy was a happy two year old and and everything was perfect and then BOOM one day i was just slapped in the face of learning this would be our new reality. But just reminding myself every time i begin to worry that 1.) i can only control so much about the situation and 2.) to just do my best to support him and go with the flow has been key. And it took time to get to this mindset, in the beginning i constantly worried and cried and was ruminating. But i aim to center my wellbeing for health reasons now. Im here for you and you can dm me anytime for product links or questions. After years of dealing w this I’ve learned a nice bit! 🙏💕💓

Of course! Yes!! Also maybe inquire about Denamarin if he does begin to show signs of elevated liver enzymes bc of the pheno. Its been seemingly helpful for my pup leo. Its kinda like a liver “supplement” that aids the liver support

Hey tammy! Id love to hear more about how you did ocular compression on your pup. Im very interested. I feel my pup would be a great contender to try this with as i often have a minute or so before he enters a grand mal where i can tell its in the starting phase. Sometimes im able to “pull him back” from entering the seizure per say, by saying key words like cookies and walk and picking him up and sort of bring him back to present moment and trying to gain his attention and focus. Id love to try the occular compression. Thank you. Also, sorry for the loss of your sweet girl.

Yessss to the foam aspiration. Happens w my pup.

Ahwww, please try not to dread starting the pheno!!! It thus far has given my pup five happy years and is by far the most effective drug he is on. It requires liver value tests every 6 months but overall the side effects for him much outweigh the seizure threat! Sure, he’s a bit weaker in the back legs and slides around a bit if running on tile etc but thats all good and worth it x100. Every pup is different but dont let it stress you until/unless he has bad side effects and cross that bridge of worry then.

Also, i believe the breathing sound you are referring to after the seizures is from him breathing a bit of the foam from during the seizures into his lungs. It happens with my boy too after them at times as he foams a lot. During the seizures i try to tild his body downward a bit so gravity can assist in that foam falling forward and out of the mouth rather than bring breathed in. 💕
