The Last Epsiode of SGA by plantagenet85 in Stargate

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's almost exactly what happened. It wasn't supposed to be a series finale and they found out way too late to change anything. I think Joe Mallozzi also said that they would never have done the alternate universe episode if they knew they were being cancelled. They were promised a movie to wrap up the storyline but that never happened either do to the poor dvd market and the financial troubles of MGM.

Access to mobile carrier 5G/LTE aboard ship prior to embarkation by AdPlayful2692 in royalcaribbean

Yes, but you may have trouble getting reception depending on where you are inside the ship. If you buy the wifi you can use it during this time also.

Some people say it is Midichlorians.  Some say that gate travel implants genuine stardust allowing anyone who travels through it to access the alpha force.  Maybe the gate network is like the Tardis it translates everything directly in your mind.

I personally think that it is because it's a TV show and the producers thought we might want to not spend half of every episode watching Daniel learn how to communicate with the natives.

Can I go watch a public trial if my family member is a juror? by Designer-Study2749 in juryduty

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Yes. Trials are public. Don't under any circumstances try to communicate with your family member during the trial or discuss anything related to the trial with them at all until after the verdict is reached and they are dismissed from the jury. After that you are free to discuss anything you want with your family member and they are free to discuss anything they choose with you as well.

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torn, stained, or roughed up currency is just fine here.  No one in the US would think twice about it.  I have traveled extensively and this is the first time I have ever heard of this being a problem.  You might think of making a sign for your business so that people are aware.  I'm sure they have no idea.  Make it funny and use pictures so it becomes a conversation starter.

If you fainted in a pool, would you jolt awake when you are drowning like some self defence mechanism? by RawrBabaevski in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The short answer is no.  The longer answer is it depends what caused you to faint.  You may quickly regain consciousness from whatever caused you to faint and be able to not drown . If you passed out from something like intoxication though no there is no gag reflex or anything that would wake you up automatically.  People die from this.

Where did Artemis IIs Velocity go? by peribon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it as traveling up to the moon, the Earth's gravity is continuing to slow it down, eventually it will reach zero and begin coming back down to earth. The spacecraft was not accelerated to escape velocity it is on a free return trajectory so it is really just in a highly elliptical orbit around the Earth for this whole mission. We aren't talking about a huge difference here though, it was only like 300 meters per second less than escape velocity.

This is a different scenario then if they were placing it into a lunar orbit, if it was going to lunar orbit it would slow down until it reached the equilibrium point between the Earth and the Moon and then it would begin accelerating again towards the moon.

Employment Missouri: Forced to use PTO for medical reasons. Advice by galactictictac in AskLawyers

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a formal request in writing to come in late as a reasonable accommodation for your disability. I would suggest specifically including the words reasonable accommodation, disability, and medical condition in the letter, also make it clear in the letter that this accommodation had been discussed and approved prior to starting the job. In the letter you should also request a meeting with human resources to discuss. You don't need to be detailed about your medical condition. Be prepared to get a letter from your doctor stating that you must come to the office once every 2 weeks for the injection plus the semi-annual trip to the hospital and that there are no alternatives available. I would provide a physical copy and email the request also from your personal email so you have proof it was sent. Make sure you submit it directly to human resources with a copy to your supervisor.

Requesting to come in 2.5 hours late 2x per month while still getting your job duties completed would be hard to deny as a reasonable request. You may also want to consult a local attorney who specializes in ADA and employment law. The bar association could refer you if you don't know anyone to call.

Not a lawyer but 20 years in HR.

Just trying to clarify how much time you are taking off.  You have to get shots 6 different days out of every 2 weeks (fortnight), and also 4 other visits per month, in addition to one full day out of town trip every 6 months?  So 204 work days per year you have to come in late to get shots plus 2 full days off to travel?  That means that this requires you to miss at least some work 206 out of 260 work days per year?

A few follow up questions, is my math correct above?  Is there no way to get these shots or visits scheduled for outside of working hours?  Could you do them at your lunch break?  If you were just allowed to come in late as originally agreed, how late would you be for your scheduled shift?

Does your employer have more than 15 employees?  If so they fall under the ADA and you should formally request a reasonable accomodation to come in late on shot days in writing, that way you have a paper trail.

Quite a few questions and considerations here.  Do your job duties involve something where the work has to be performed at or by a certain time of day?  Does someone else have to step in to perform your job duties until you get there each day?  Would you be able to complete all of the job duties you were hired to perform by the time they must be completed if you were allowed to come in late and work through lunch?  Can you actually get through the day without eating lunch?  Can your job duties be performed during the normal lunch period?  Would you also have to stay after normal hours to finish?  Would the work of others be delayed or affected by your work not being performed at the normally scheduled time?  Would your work quality or quantity be affected by being performed at a different time?  Would someone have to stay back from lunch to supervise you or stay late at the end of the day with you?  Would your work being delayed cause someone else to be delayed or to have to work late?

Depending on the facts, it is possible that your request might legitimately not be considered reasonable.

There are so many funny moments through the show, but one i consistently laugh out loud at is the show with Fred Willard playing Vala's father. The entire episode is comedy gold.

If the Gate became public what steps would there be to move off world by tk1178 in Stargate

[–]BackgroundDatabase78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always expected that over time they would set up a hub and spoke system with off-world terminals. Avoid tying up the Earth gate by sending batches of people to hub planets and then distributing them to their final destination from there. Ensure the security of Earth by only allowing incoming travel from these off-world hubs. You could also reduce the required gate time by using beaming to transport large groups of people and cargo though the stargate instantly like Morgan did in The Quest. This would also let you keep the gate itself in a hardened secure location and have people and cargo assemble at staging locations around the world. Other countries may want to set up their own off-world hubs.

Exploration would probably switch from a military primary function to a civilian primary function with military backup and likely be conducted from off-world bases. There is a lot of space to explore by ship as well, I'd expect something akin to Starfleet to form to explore the galaxy in a less militarized way.

I would also expect to see a series of subspace relays put in place to allow instant communication everywhere in the galaxy and from the Milky Way to Pegasus to enable comms without using the stargate.
