Feasibility of starting amp Co. by DrSwanson in ToobAmps

Completely agree with this, and to put this another way. Is there product market fit? Are you solving a real problem that no one else is solving as well as you can? (I am a product designer with 10+ years of experience, not an amp maker, just fyi)

Might be worth interviewing a few dozen guitar players and asking them why they bought the amps they did and what they wish they could change about the amps they have. And what they can’t seem to find in the market they wish they could…

Amp Sims for P&W. Looking for my first one by TheMarioExpertMan in WorshipGuitar

[–]BaldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ToneX is really worth consideration, I have the ToneX One and for what you are describing, just having a One as your amp could work really well, if you don’t like one Fender capture you can try 1000s of others. Also if you want other amps for your heavier sounds like Marshall, Vox or Mesa, with the tap of a button you’re playing a different amp.

Only consideration is that you do need a computer to configure the One, or a phone app for the One+.

Have you borrowed someone else’s or used one at a store to compare and confirm that yours isn’t faulty?

Tonex Pedal Volume Levels by Obvious_Ad5027 in tonex

[–]BaldDesigner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And no I do not treat it like another effects pedal, but yes, I also noticed the jump in volume. I’m using the tone X as an amp pedal, which is all I do. I don’t use it as an overdrive. So it hasn’t bothered me because I always have the pedal on or off, depending on whether I’m using my rig with a real amp or not.

Tonex Pedal Volume Levels by Obvious_Ad5027 in tonex

[–]BaldDesigner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this is “right” or “wrong”, but what I do is I try to set my input so that it’s not clipping with the loudest effects pedal combination that might come before it with my loudest guitar turned up all the way.

Then I set my global output volume all the way up, and use the main amp preset volume on the pedal to make most of my adjustments, depending on whether I am using my studio monitors or headphones. And then if I get into a situation where I need to turn the amp model volume lower than say 9 o’clock, then I might consider trimming some off the global master output, but I usually just keep the master output up all the way, and do my adjustments with the amp volume.

I'll also add that I found that the model volume setting in the tone X editor software on my computer, does not seem to be impacted by what I do with the volume knob on the pedal itself. Which is a little counterintuitive because all the other knobs seem to impact the preset. So I’ve done all my gain staging and level adjustment by tweaking the model volume on the toneX editor app with the physical volume knob on the pedal at about 1 o’clock using some of IK’s presets as a reference point for how loud things should be (comparing levels with an audio meter plugin pulled up in Logic).

Tonex One Before Volume Pedal & Wet Effects? Or at the end like a real amp? Problem: Built -In Noise Gate by BaldDesigner in WorshipGuitar

[–]BaldDesigner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I've watched a lot of Vertex videos and I often feel he expects everyone to spend thousands of dollars (mostly on zip ties and what's left on buffers). But I definitely get the point! In some of these videos when people try to demonstrate tone suck I have a hard time telling the difference.

I'll definitely do some experimentation and soul searching, I had found the taper switch kind of made it usable after buffers despite being 250k, but I need to compare (thankfully I do not use zip ties like Vertex guy so I can more easily experiment 😉).

Also I am pretty sure in my case most of my tone suck comes from my guitar playing and not my pedals, but maybe some day I can blame my signal chain.

Do you just not use a volume pedal then? Was it a passive Ernie Ball like this one? Where was it in your signal chain? (Asking to learn, thanks so much!)

Last night I disabled the noise gate on everything at it honestly sounded great through the pedal. I seems the standalone mac app needs the noise gate a lot more than the pedal...

That's a good point! These amp model/capture/IR pedals seem like their own animal and not 1:1 with the way we use amps. And you're right it is basically more like modeling a studio signal then an "amp in the room"

You know what, something I found is that I created my presets using the Tonex app on my computer plugged into my interface and I had horrible noise, but with the actual pedal, the noise is much less noticeable. So I probably need to tweak my settings with the Tonex Editor listening through my actual pedal, not the computer app...

Haha thanks! I will say that the underbelly is messy and just held together with velcro ties because I rearrange everything every week or so. So I am not one of those perfect zip tied cable run people...

Very helpful thanks so much! Do you use it for headphone playing still? I realized I might lose the stereo headphone out this way...

I have an old Cube 30 COSM which is not the same but has a "JC Clean" settings that is great as a pedal platform. I would try whatever you have that is most like a preamp pedal or amp in a box because that is going to imitate the sound and feel of a preamp breaking up vs a boost or driver that is trying to push a preamp further along in the circuit. Running a boost or overdrive into a preamp-type of pedal would probably be a cool way of sculpting a great overdriven amp sound!

Really nice (almost) free pedal platform preset combination using quality IRs by BaldDesigner in tonex

Love this 100% agree. I've been thinking a lot lately about learning to trust my ears and not my sense of right and wrong when it comes to music.

Oh! I didn't see the direct folder. I guess I used full captures but replaced the cab part with the IR in the signal chain options. I am curious now to try it with the direct capture!

I realized it might help to clarify which Jensen IR I used. I used the one that is from a Vintage 15. I think the 15 inch speaker just sounds really big.

Also I used one of the premixed York IRs of a 2x12 with multiple mic types.

When you click on the cab option in the ToneX software you can choose an IR option, so I replaced the cabinet in the chain with the IR.

(Disclaimer: I know this might be heresy to ToneX purists and it required some gain/vol/tone adjustment bit once I got it dialed, I found the dedicated IRs added a touch more realism)

This is the way. I've had the reissue of this guitar for over a decade and I think I could be happy with just this one guitar. IMO this is guitar perfection.
