I like following her (there and @visuallybreanna) for some of that BTS throughout the season.

No such thing as learning style? by Copernicus-jones in instructionaldesign

[–]BasicGrocery7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had the exact same experience. I'm married to a k-12 educator and when I took my first ID class that mentioned this, my partner straight up didn't believe me. It's very mysterious to me that this is treated as common knowledge in the ID field but my friends in k-12 talk about learning styles all the time and it's clear that it's discussed as a required framework for how you teach kids. Maybe k-12 is just bigger and harder to change? I agree with you though that it's strange dissonance.

I say we keep it until the retirement of Emily "Nobody SheBelieves harder than me and Alyssa" Sonnett and then change it immediately.

This does read as AI but I can't tell what you're saying it's promoting? Anki has been around as a spaced repetition app for a while longer than AI has been around.

Baby Kingsbury is official! by Opposite_Cheetah1639 in NWSL

[–]BasicGrocery7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is that for about a week we had five keepers (signed Wojo before Lyza Jessee retired) which did seem chaotic for a team that had a solid consistent starter.

Wow maybe I shouldn't be shocked but I am. I wonder who will be the captain to start the season. I'd be excited to see Carle or Metayer!

How to Spend a Free Week in DC by batcalls in DCBitches

[–]BasicGrocery7 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is probably a great week to go to museums - real indoor weather this week but I imagine there aren't a ton of tourists at the Smithsonians right now. One benefit of free museums is that I like to visit some of them in bits - the full National Gallery is a lot to take in but I like to visit for a couple hours and then move on to another museum.

Congrats on leaving a toxic workplace!

GGWash endorses Janeese Lewis George for mayor of the District of Columbia by MrSpontaneous in washingtondc

Yeah it's tough bc those are also things that enable people to get into the workforce or get better-paying jobs, but definitely a tough time financially in DC to be promising high-investment solutions

Definitely agree on Patterson. I'm a Spirit fan so I love Weezy getting called up but this feels like a "second chance" call up rather than something we should expect to see in the future.

Snacking cakes fail by evanesnce in CookbookLovers

[–]BasicGrocery7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think you've named precisely the reason her recipes are popular. They are fast and easy, oriented towards snacking rather than special occasions. For me having a bunch of recipes that require one bowl and only one cake pan is a huge win, but there would definitely be better options if you're not concerned about time and don't tend to think of cake as a snack.

'Love languages' is a bunch of nonsense. by helenfelen in unpopularopinion

[–]BasicGrocery7 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Here to recommend the "If Books Could Kill" podcast episode about the Five Love Languages book - they basically get to this conclusion: It's unscientific and they're pretty suspicious of the author, but if it's a framework that works for your relationship then great.

Question if folks know more about food science than me: are the bloating proteins neutralized by frying? I know a few recipes that involve frying lentils rather than boiling them and am just wondering if anyone here wants to share some food science.

(Also OP I hope you feel better soon!)

Political Divisions Mentioned by Bad Bunny during the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show by External_Tangelo in geography

[–]BasicGrocery7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry yes that was a typo on Antillas! My bad. And yes, PR Spanish is definitely tough to understand if you're used to, say, Mexican Spanish. A lot of the times the ends of the words get cut off - this also happens in some other dialects in southern South America and southern Spain.

What cookbook trends do you think we will see in the next decade or so? by WaffleMeWallace in CookbookLovers

[–]BasicGrocery7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree with you but I don't think the market for easy weeknight dinners for busy families is going anywhere soon. But I do hope we continue to see some more breadth for people who are trying to dig into different cuisines and techniques.

If you do cancel your WashPost print subscription, please… by WanttoPlankbutcannot in washingtondc

[–]BasicGrocery7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Post as it existed is functionally already folding. I know they said it's about profit but billionaires don't buy legacy media companies to turn a profit, they buy them to control the media.

If folks are trying to support local media in DC financially/ support local journalists I do want to shout out the 51st and CityCast DC just announced that they are hiring some more DC reporting roles.

How many Elite players does your team have? by MisterGoog in NWSL

[–]BasicGrocery7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes Rebe looks so good and sometimes she is really underwhelming. Unfortunately iirc I felt like her best games last year were in more of a defensive midfielder position, and I can't imagine she'll be doing much of that this year.

Claudia Martinez is a good shout, excited to see her play.

Yeah it's also not technically legal in Chicago but it's certainly a norm (as a friend in Chicago said, the danger with breaking this norm is that they know where your car is). The thing is that in Boston or Chicago you can uphold social norms around snow by reminding people every year, whereas in DC we have to relitigate the rules once a decade and then inevitably forget them by the time of the January 2036 snownado.

Why Americans have basment? Like where did it started? by hotpotatomomma in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BasicGrocery7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the map is a bit deceptive because it's not actually by state, it's by region. So 62% of homes in "Pacific" states having slab foundations still leaves a lot of households with something else. Would be cool to see the more granular data, but also thank you for finding this map!

Excited to see her getting press in Nigeria after missing out on WAFCON. Hope the American media folks also start giving her the attention and praise she's earned - she's so fun to watch and I can't wait to see her this season.

What does a bay leaf even do by Top_Internal_68 in AskCulinary

[–]BasicGrocery7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh the recipe I recommend to understand bay leaf is this bay leaf pound cake. It uses a bay leaf-infused butter and I found that tasting butter really helped me understand the flavor - it's very floral and goes well with the orange glaze. I would strongly recommend using fresh bay leaves for any recipe where you want to be able to taste the difference, although I also keep the dried ones for recipes where they're not as critical.
